I own somewhere around 6 to 8 bicycles; I stopped counting a long time ago, because i felt embarrassed about it. I used to do about 250-300 miles a week, but now I keep it under 150, sometimes less than 100. And i never have a problem with saddle sores. My guess is one of two things - either the seat design is wrong for you, or the seat is adjusted improperly. Maybe a combination of both. Keep in mind that seat adjustment is not just a matter of height - it's also the tilt of the seat. This is something you're going to want to tweak depending on seat height, seat design, personal riding style, and the size and design of your bike's frame. For instance, on my "speed" bike, I usually ride in a crouch, so I raise the seat high and tilt it forward a bit. On my cross bike, I spend lots of time upright in the saddle, riding no-hands, so I have the seat level. And so on.

I suggest you take it down to the local bike shop and explain everything. They can recommend a saddle design based on your body type, and suggest the right adjustments for your bike and riding style. The biggest advantage is, most local shops will let you return the saddle if it's not comfortable on the road. You can't do that on EBay.

Panda- I thought about getting a spare bike- for when friends dropped in.  We then could go riding.

I know, you mentioned that. You should! It's a terrific idea! You could find something decent on Craig's List for less than a hundred bucks.

Thanks Panda for the info, I guess I need to take the bike in then and get some advice. I appreciate you taking the time to explain things to me further....I understand more about the various things to take in account now which was the point of this thread so I am grateful to you and everyone else who responded.

I'd like to add my voice to Panda's and encourage you to do this. I have an extra bike as of fall of last year and carry it around with mine...this way I can usually get a friend or one of my visiting sons to ride with me. Especially if we're headed to the rail trail. My friends love that I have this bike because many of them do not own one and we both have a blast.

This type of thing is un-workable.

I had a few guest bedroom set up for family.

When they finally came- they got a hotel room.  I dis-assembled the guest rooms- thinking now they will visit as planned- but they went to the Ozarks instead.

See?
