Marini -> Why are people called racists because they are against illegal immigration? (6/1/2010 8:30:32 PM)

This is a question I have wondered for a long time.
Why are people so quick to call people "racist" because they are

against illegal immigration?
Especially, rampant and unbridled immigration?

I know I would care a lot less, if the sheer numbers of illegal immigrants
were not so high.
I am against rampant and unbridled ILLEGAL immigration, and I don't give a rats ass what country
the people are coming from.
I would not be any more supportive of illegal immigration if millions of people were coming here illegally  from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Somalia, Ethiopia, England, Ireland, Russia, China, Japan, Italy or anywhere else in this world.

I know for a FACT as a Black woman, that if millions of Black people start coming here illegally from Africa, that many that support the "poor hispanics" would not be so fucking supportive at ALL.
It WILL be such a very different "situation", if thousands and millions of Black people start coming here illegally.
Please, please tell me I am wrong, so I can laugh myself to sleep.

For many people it has NOTHING to do with ethnicity, and everything to do with flooding our
country with millions of people that are here illegally, period.
One of the things that urks me personally, is the drain of illegal immigration on our limited resources.

Some people think that Americans have unlimited resources and our pockets are so deep that it doesn't matter, but yet it does.
There are Hispanics that came here legally that are against illegal immigration, are they racist also?

So back to my OP, why does not being happy about millions of people flooding your country of origin,
equate with making you a racist?

Can someone riddle me this one?
por favor?

Not everyone who opposes immigration is a racist.

Some are merely mistaken, in thinking that immigrants, illegal or otherwise, harm America, when in fact America is better off because of the immigrants.

Some are mistaken in thinking that legal immigrants are good, while illegal immigrants are bad. Again, immigration helps America, makes us stronger and more competitive; whether someone has a green car or not doesn't change the fact that they work hard and contribute to the economy.

Marini -> RE: Why are people called racists because they are against illegal immigration? (6/1/2010 8:47:08 PM)

Rex, I take it you are of the opinion that it does NOT matter if people come here legally or illegally?
Why even bother to have the legal immigration process?
Why not just do away with legal immigration, and let anyone and everyone come here legally, and let

the chips fall where they may?

We don't need the stinking legal immigration process either, I say let everyone in and no one needs to apply to come live here.

What do green cars have to do with it?

C'mon, Mari. It's a knee-jerk, and it's easy. It's also a conversation ending slander, used by cowards who know they can't defend their position otherwise.

I'm very sympathetic to what brings people here, but we can't just keep ignoring the dangers. Calling race is what they've got. Borders and citizenship are not just quaint little concepts we don't need anymore.

To answer the OP's original question: "Why are people so quick to call people "racist" because they are
against illegal immigration?"

It is really quite simple. People with extreme viewpoints such as those who fingerpoint and call people racist KNOW that certain buzzwords have extremely negative connotations. How many times have you seen a serious debate or argument going on and then finally one side gets frustrated and starts calling someone a Nazi, or Racist, Bigot, Sexist, etc. etc.?

It is easy to ignore solid facts and reasonable logic to play to peoples emotions when you start using words that are negatively associated. If I am talking with someone on the street and out of the blue I scream loudly and call them racist and make a hysterical scene, there are going to be people who take my side without even knowing what is going on. No one wants to take the side of the person I am accusing of being a 'racist'.

yeh I will run with that one!

in a word a disingenuous loser backed into a corner using a negative "political" buzzword as a trump card to shut down a legitimate discussion and "steal" a win.  Often to thwart the free speech of the opposition.  SOP on the boards.  Good call!

popeye1250 -> RE: Why are people called racists because they are against illegal immigration? (6/1/2010 11:10:55 PM)

Because they keep losing the argument and they try to change the subject?

I always say; "I'm of Irish descent and I'd arrest and deport the Illegal Irish FIRST, just to set the example!"
How can anyone argue against that?
Another tired saw they use is to try to call illegal aliens, "Immigrants." That's like calling me "Hispanic."
Apples and oranges.
There's only one context to "illegal."
I'm voting for a guy who's running for congress on June 8 th who just happens to be black. Look up "Tim Scott for Congress". Then look under "issues" and see what he has to say about this out-of-control illegal alien situation.
Tim Scott is the "toughest" on this subject and that's why he's getting my vote.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: Why are people called racists because they are against illegal immigration? (6/1/2010 11:30:44 PM)

Illegal immigration and outsourcing means fewer jobs that pay a living wage. Also, immigration is the reason so many college degrees are now worthless and many students are unable to pay back their student loans. Today's graduates now have to compete with educated immigrants who come from countries where higher education is paid for by the government. Educated immigrants don't have to worry about not being able to get home loans because of student loans negatively affecting their debt to income ratio. For them, there is no debt. This isn't about racism. It's about unfairness to American workers and American college graduates.

LadyPact -> RE: Why are people called racists because they are against illegal immigration? (6/1/2010 11:46:06 PM)

I think it has to do with it just being the ace in the hole card.

The 'you're not compassionate/sympathetic to illegals' card just doesn't cut it.  Not in times where so many people have no job and have so many financial burdens.  The 'they are just looking to work' card doesn't fly when unemployment is so high.  The 'they just want to support their families' card doesn't work when so many people are having trouble supporting their own.  The 'they want better opportunities for health care and/or education' card doesn't work because people are struggling to afford their own health care.  (Big detractor in the national health care debate was the number of illegal immigrants.)

There's really nothing left but the low blow of the racist card.

Yeah, saying illegals would overrun us was a great bullshit line in the attempt kill health insurance reform.

Hey American, you don`t get care b/c an illegal might.

Great logic.

Playing the victim card for being called racist when one hasn`t,is just lame.

There are plenty of examples of elected republicans and right-media pundits and GOP officials who engage in racism or race baiting. To the point where two GOP leaders had to go on TV to distance themselves from the jerks.

If you have a good argument, make it.

If you want to disassociated yourself from the GOP leadership/rushbeckhanitysavagepalin who bring the garbage, then go ahead.

But don`t whine b/c you come off like them, asking their questions, repeating their diatribes.

See,it`s just that from a distance,ya`ll look the same.I`m kidding of course.

Can you give us an example of a lagitamate critic of the president(in public life) ,who has been called racist for their criticisms?

I can`t think of one.

I can think of plenty who deserve the title, tho. Most are on foxnews and often they are parroted here.

So we can`t point that out without folks like yourself (and rich)getting all defencive?

I`m also for strong enforcement of immigration laws.I would love to put a few business owners in the same cells as the illegals.

I just wan it done legally and without the demonizing. It`s not neccessary and usually it`s BS meant to scare folks.

PerfectSurrender -> RE: Why are people called racists because they are against illegal immigration? (6/2/2010 3:16:36 AM)

Because billions of dollars get invested by companies that have a vested interest in harboring illegals who will do work in a fashion that Americans, who fully understand their workers rights and where their lives should be, will NOT and they've purposely concocted a smear campaign against any all dissenters that believe in the process of naturalization.

There is big money in illegals. Always ask yourself: who benefits? Who pays for all of this PR? Who buys the millions of dollars in ad slots? CERTAINLY NOT POOR ILLEGALS.

Nothing is about the good of the common man in politics, not in nations that have long forgotten their revolutions. It's all power and money. The truth is that it's corrupt old white men buying all of those ad slots insinuating that we HAVE TO accept burdens to our infrastructure that we can't possibly handle with the already insurmountable pork-barrel spending that's going on and the fact that we're in such dire straights due to our unethical trade with China (when rather we should be trading and building plants in Mexico, our neighbor, not a commie dictatorship).

The government wants a population it can exploit. The less we are exploitable the more they will replace us with foreigners who will gladly take the bottom rung of society as their station in life and it doesn't matter to anyone responsible how this aberration of capitalist bloat will effect us all down the road. All that matters is the bottom line of the dollar today, regardless of tomorrow.

This race-card is also pulled by Mexicans who legitimately do not understand why we don't want them here and just assume it's racism. We know it isn't racism, but how can they tell? They just know we're saying "stay the hell out of our country" and that SOUNDS racist enough for them. Apparently we hate them and want to erect a mountain range between us.

What they don't understand is that our gripe is with them not abiding our laws, customs and needs as a society. No nation should be forced to philosophically, ethically and politically accept an invasion, armed or otherwise. If they can not accept the process of responsibly entering our nation we should have doubts about them being able to be responsible and productive citizens.

We have enough people to mow laws, clean toilettes, drive trucks, cut trees and make burritos. Seriously, there isn't a single job that they do that some poor redneck wouldn't love to get his hands on. That isn't racism that's just common sense and that common sense often gets misdirected into racism in the minds of those this issue effects the most: lower class Americans with little education that desperately want to not be poor in their own nation and certainly can't battle the onslaught of an entire foreign army of workers that seek to replace them.

In my humble opinion, of course.

It isn't that individuals are being dragged into the street so to speak and being brow beaten for racism. It's the general theme of the anti-naturalization protest that is claiming "YOU'RE RACIST IF YOU DON'T ACCEPT THE ENTIRE MEXICAN WORKFORCE NOW!" Personally, I can agree with your sentiments as far as FOX goes.

We have every right to be pissed about the claim that we're racists for expecting a foreign nation to not dump its lowest class all over our nation, siphon our resources and rampantly over-populate jobs that our poorest desperately need. They benefit us nothing. The fact that the Mexican president is basically insinuating that we're evil for trying to tighten our immigration policy just goes to show that they are quite intent on dumping their worst and dumbest all over us. We are called racist for disapproving

If Mexico wanted to send us all of their engineers, experts and artists, I'd say drop the fences and let them all come over no questions asked but that isn't the case. I honestly think this whole problem could be solved by basing immigration policy on nation of origins crime rates and poverty levels. Certain nations should get a free pass, certain nations should be blocked out entirely until things improve.

The ghettos of Mexico should not transplant themselves into the ghettos of America. It just hurts the poor that are here. It doesn't hurt the middle class slob, the upper class tight wad, but the poor joe dickweed that really needs that spank-room clean-up job that'll supply him with a steady diet of ramen and saltines.

The nation as a living organism should reject all attempts to infuse inferiority into its stock if you'll excuse my German. [;)]

eyesopened -> RE: Why are people called racists because they are against illegal immigration? (6/2/2010 3:40:15 AM)

Yes, I've been called a racist when I have never referred to illegal immigrants as anything other than illegal immigrants or aliens.

Immigration should be good for our country.  It has been good for our country.  Diversity makes us stronger and I firmly believe this.  But we are a nation of laws.  If the laws are bad or the process is bad, change that.  Don't let people start out knowing that we cannot or will not enforce our laws.

But the question I have is that the popular opinion seems to be that the United States is a shit-hole of greed and corruption.  If that were the case, why would so many people want to be here?  Why wouldn't people be fleeing our borders instead?  Since I see so much criticism of the United States and what a shit-hole of greed and corruption it is, I can only assume that the people who want to come here are greedy and/or corrupt.   OR that their country of origin is an even bigger shit-hole.
