It's sickeningly overwhelming how much mutilation (and myriad methods at that) is performed on young girls/women to protect them from the inappropriate sexual advances of men. Perhaps we should spent a couple hundred years "ironing" the testicles of all boys between the ages of 10-25, to help them control themselves. (Not really, but geez...)

I'd say a better solution to the problem would be forced sterilization of the males responsible for the unwanted "advances" and pregnancies.

Well, once again, the whole idea is centered on it being the woman's/girl's fault for the unwelcome advances of men. Female castration is done because it's believed that if a woman is able to have sensation or orgasm, she's likely to become promiscuous. At least, that's been my understanding of it, but I could be wrong. I haven't researched the topic that broadly. Regardless, it's female mutilation due to sexist beliefs about women.

There was a a show about this on either History or Discovery a couple of months ago that I watched. It is sickening to us, but it is the custom there. There was also a show about a tribe who does the neck rings in order to stretch the necks of girls. Long necks are considered the measure of beauty there. There are all kinds of customs and rituals that we find sickening and shocking. Probably many that go on that we have no idea about. I just do not think it is fair to judge them by our standards. It is what it is, a custom. Ear lobe stretching, that lip plate insertion thing, all make me go ewww, but, I am sure we do many things that they would call abuse too.

If you start reading up about 'breast ironing' you will discover that Cameroon have organizations that are run by the natives of Cameroon to stop this barbaric act. Native teachers, teach pupils about the perils of breast ironing which include hideous deformities and a higher risk of breast cancer. The women and men of Cameroon are coming out in force to put pressure on their government to make this an illegal act. Its the same for female circumcision. Most anti circumcision organizations are made up of the very women that were once held down and cut with a dirty razor blade. Their campaigns reach far and wide, including the western world, in an effort to put more pressure on their governments to stop this barbaric act that not only traumatizes children but causes health issues to many for the rest of their lives. Neither of the above mentioned are done for religious reasons. They are done because the elders wrongly believe they are protecting or enhancing their young females. I do agree that we shouldn't impose our values on other cultures arbiterally, except where it is clear that the practice is barbaric. I wholeheartedly support organizations that are formed to educate cultures against such practices.
