Yeah, but on the bright side, your giant nerdiness has been making me laugh on some of these recent posts. In recent memory I recall DND, Fantasy & Scifi, and now pirates. If nothing else, I gotta admire the sheer depth and breadth of it.

This is but the tip of our True Nerdly iceberg.  It runs unspeakably deep in my household, rather like Cthulhu dead but dreaming in R'lyeh.

After the three of us went to see Splice in the theater and howled over the particularly bad science bits, we realized that due to our respective fields, our extended poly family (we'd need to bring in another secondary who hived off with his own primary a few years ago) would actually have the nerdly superpowers to build that lab and engineer the creature.  At least we would if we were in a movie and they gave us a good montage.  Except in real life Dren would have turned out contaminated with recombinant pizza DNA because the stupid fuckers ate in the lab and handled the samples ungloved.  Pepperoni nipples and cheese in really unfortunate places, ew.  Don't you love movie science?

If I may, my name means "little Treasure" in German. And that is how my Dom calls and treats me.  I know He loves and cherishes me--enough so that He wants to help me improve myself and I want to improve myself.  He disciplines me when necessary--when I've done something wrong or just to remind me that life isn't fair.

It's so strange that subs and Doms both need one basic quality--strength.  Subs need strength to endure and improve just as Doms need it to shoulder responsibility and teach.  I think a good Dom knows His or Her sub well enough to know what the sub needs, and a great Dom is selfless enough to work with the sub to bring the improvement to fruition.  Usually in a way that is suitable for both of them.

I suppose that is what I would look for in a Dom--a rock, a shelter in the storm.  An Apollo--firm, fair, and fierce.  However, being Apollo all the time is just too damn hard and a good sub should also be selfless enough to pretend not to notice when there are a few cracks in that Dom exterior and a mere mortal peeks through. . . even though it can be downright scary and confusing to see that frail mortal looking back at you. . .

So I suppose, for me in essence that's it: strength and selflessness, on both sides--the same qualities just in different manifestations.  So if you are a Dom who is also giving what you are taking it's all good--whether your style is kind and loving or sadistic and and hard to please.

The essence of a Dom?

Isn't that just a polite way of saying Cum?

Actually anyone seeking the essence of a dom just needs to give a good loooooooooooooooooooong swipe of the tongue along my taint. You'll find some damn fine essence there.

Darkvamp1978 -> RE: The essence of a Dom (7/5/2010 9:33:46 AM)

I must say that this post has proved very insightfull, I am currently finding my feet as an R/L Dom and have often questioned what it is that makes a good Dominant, some of the comments posted in this thread have much reinforced my own thoughts and feelings that being a Dominant is something that you ARE rather than something that you can just learn i.e. there needs to be part of you that wants to accept the responsablity to care for and nurture a submissives needs.

I want to know what makes a Dom, in the sense that he can walk into a room with a sub, and she can tell him for what he is and feel the ability to submit to him, even with no actual acts taking place between them.

rick,

Welcome to the forums. Are you talking about a sub you don't know at all in this quote?

There is no true Dom formula, I'm sorry. Everyone is different and looks for different things just like in regular relationships. I don't really believe loving is different for us either. The same qualities you see in leaders are the things typically people here post about looking for in a Dom. What makes someone comfortable to submit to a Dom will vary too. Those "twattish" Doms you pointed out could very well be the ideal Dom for someone.

The good news is, you can just be who you are and find someone that fits with that and fits with what you are looking for in a dynamic without worrying about any mystery formula. As Kana pointed out, I believe listening is one of a Dominant's greatest assets and you're already demonstrating that here very well.

Good luck to you!

I dunno Laurell...
The cruel dick kind of  Dominant, though he could theoretically find some emotional masochist or newbie who thinks her submission is like The Story of O. However when I come across the dick type dominant, I think its some online wanker who has some internet porn idea of what dominance is.
I just cant take them seriously. Or if I could, I would think of them as an emotional and physical abuser.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: The essence of a Dom (7/5/2010 9:48:16 AM)

I think of dominace as power. You can use power for good or you can use it for ill intent. You can use it to create, grow and nurture or you can use it to destroy.

~ Fast and Facetious Response ~

The essence of a Dom is a blend of his sperm (unused), much sweat and a tad of his urine. Of course bottles are sold on the black market to wannabe doms it is worth a mint. One should understand that the ageing process of such a bottle (if it is indeed bottled before death) is based on the maturity and experience of the Dom together with his actual years Dominating. When it is available it is usually marketed in a cut crystal parfume bottle with a pure gold top replete with diamonds as befitting the essence of such a person. It should be bi-graved with the words "Eaude l'Dom".  It has been believed (by whom I sadly know not) that the Pied Piper of Hamlin sprayed this essence to have the rodents follow a true Master and again to lure the young folk who were attracted to the scent of such a powerful person who couldn't play a note on his pipes.

This thread has been... insightful, interesting, disturbing, and made me giggle. All at once. Ahhh, the wonders of this forum. :)
