Not unless you you want to talk about the Spanish Inquisition and the many other glories of Christianity.

Add up all the dead from the two sides, and tell me how the numbers come out.

The topic, however, is about "those stupid Christians", I think, so if you want to discuss the other issue, start a thread.

How could the Bible say the Antichrist will be of Muslim descent when Islam didn't even exist when it was written?

That sort of thing wouldn't be an issue for an omniscient deity.

Personally I think that people have a right to believe whatever they want to, but I wish they would not try to influence and control national and international laws and policies based on their spiritual beliefs.

thishereboi- I would bet you a hundred dollars that if we elected a woman president a new prophecy will magically appear in the bible that says the Anti-christ is a woman. Who and what it is seems to morph depending on who is in power.

Speechless at the arrogance and ignorance of the bloggers - they truly believe that the apocalypse should come to pass in the US when there's a whole world available for it to occur? OK the US is large, but on a global scale not so much and the Gulf Of Mexico is a duckpond compared to the ocean area of the planet.

But in order to understand that, they'd need to have at least a 4th-grade level grasp of both science and geography. And since neither subject is addressed in the bible, it's unlikely they would have any real familiarity with either subject.

Harvard:

The charter creating the corporation of Harvard College came in 1650. In the early years, the College trained many Puritan ministers.[11]  The college offered a classic academic course based on the English university model --many leaders in the colony had attended Cambridge University--but one consistent with the prevailing Puritan philosophy.

Princeton:

New Light Presbyterians founded the College of New Jersey, later Princeton University, in 1746 in order to train ministers dedicated to their views. The college was the educational and religious capital of Scotch-Irish America. In 1756, the college moved to Princeton, New Jersey.

Dartmouth:

Established in 1769 by Congregational minister Eleazar Wheelock with funds largely raised by the efforts of Native American preacher Samson Occom, the College's initial mission was to acculturate and Christianize the Native Americans.

Brown:
The charter required that the makeup of the board of thirty-six trustees include twenty-two Baptists, five Friends, four Congregationalists, and five Church of England members, and by twelve Fellows, of whom eight, including the President, should be Baptists "and the rest indifferently of any or all denominations."

Yale:

Yale traces its beginnings to "An Act for Liberty to Erect a Collegiate School," passed by the General Court of the Colony of Connecticut on October 9, 1701 in an effort to create an institution to train ministers and lay leadership for Connecticut. Soon thereafter, a group of ten Congregationalist ministers: Samuel Andrew, Thomas Buckingham, Israel Chauncy, Samuel Mather, James Noyes, James Pierpont, Abraham Pierson, Noadiah Russel, Joseph Webb and Timothy Woodbridge, all of whom were alumni of Harvard, met in the study of Reverend Samuel Russell in Branford, Connecticut, to pool their books to form the school's first library.[12]  The group, led by James Pierpont, is now known as "The Founders.

Yeah, those damn dumb Christians.  Education, science, and actually learning about the world has never been of much importance ...

Yeah take a look at that list you put up. All but one was founded to train ministers as its primary function (Dartmouth was more interested in converting Native Americans). Where is the schools founded for general education or the pursuit of science?

as a fast reply... Fundamentalists give me the willies because they may have little interest in decreasing the potential for war, in interest of fulfillment of their prophecies.  Same goes for resource management.

Yep, and you have me laughing my ass off at the image of the Palin haters turning into fundies over it.

The water is turned to blood. How are apocalyptic churches not going to run with that image?

thishereboi -> RE: Christian Fundamentalists Believe Oil Spill Heralds The Apocalypse « Alan Colmes Liberaland (6/7/2010 7:34:56 PM)

Now that you mention it, I do remember something in the bible about the antichrist being able to see far into the distance. Perhaps as far as Russia?

FTA:

"Then there are the fringies who believe Obama is the anti-Christ, such as the vile Obambi.com blog.

The anti-christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal….the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything.

I have been looking for the scriptural reference for this "prophecy" for years. Christians have quoted it to me, but never seem to know exactly where it is written.

For what it's worth, the genesis of the "Anti-Christ" comes from Revelations Chapter 13:

"And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems upon its horns and a blasphemous name upon its heads.

And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority.

One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth followed the beast with wonder.

Men worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?"

And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months; it opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven.

Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and tongue and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, every one whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain.

If any one has an ear, let him hear:

If any one is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if any one slays with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.

Then I saw another beast which rose out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon.

It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed.

It works great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of men; and by the signs which it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast, it deceives those who dwell on earth, bidding them make an image for the beast which was wounded by the sword and yet lived; and it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast so that the image of the beast should even speak, and to cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.

Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.

This calls for wisdom: let him who has understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty-six."

The "dragon" was previously established by John in earlier chapters as Satan. The "beast" is what has come to be called the Anti-Christ. As far as I'm aware, there is no Biblical reference to the Anti-Christ's race or religion. Interpreting John's revelations is one of those deals where you can read almost anything into his symbolism.

Thank you. I have read revelations probably at least a hundred times. and practically blacked out my bible in hand written definitions, greek translations and cross references. I just could never find that particular prophecy about a 40 year old muslim taking over the world.

Here is some additional info on the correct theological interpretation of the Antichrist from Revelation Chapter 13.

http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3131204

I don't mean to cross post, but I didn't feel like typing all this crap again. It came from the "Obama is the Antichrist" thread from back in March.

I had a couple of other posts in that thead that further explain the historical context of the Book of Revelation if anyone is interested.

Something along the lines of, "everything is fine, nothing to see here, Nero did it in the conservatory with the candlestick," as I recall.

No Rich, this was the thread where I had to clue you in to the fact that The Omen was not a documentary, remember?

Yes, Brainia, and it was the thread where I told you this shit was a lot more fun than any boring old movie.

I don't recall that we found much common ground.

Prehaps we create our own reality and what you perceive as happening is not what I perceive, yet we are both right.

Vendaval -> RE: Christian Fundamentalists Believe Oil Spill Heralds The Apocalypse « Alan Colmes Liberaland (6/8/2010 12:26:47 AM)

The fundamentalist/zealot types are so focused on their interpretation of their particular scriptures that they cannot view the news of the day objectively.

Nothing new about millennium fever.

No, the lack of a beer river in my backyard is definitive proof that we don't create our own reality, some people are just better at perceiving reality than others.
