I would like to propose a new question:

As Ds, what do you usually end up calling subs or slaves? I assume that in many cases, there is a difference between public, private, and play situations.

As I like to be called by my real name and other sweet names that we both like, same goes for him.

I'm not big on protocol really.

~FR~

I expect to be called something appropriate to the venue and the company kept.  My preferred name, legal name, Miss, and Ma'am are all acceptable options for those with whom I am not intimately acquainted or in vanilla company.  Mistress is my preferred form of address for submissives with whom I have an intimate relationship, however, My Lady is adequate.  Goddess and Princess are right out.  I have a hard time taking anyone seriously who addresses me by either of those titles.

I typically call my subs by their given or scene names when we're in public and address them as "pet" or some other term of endearment in private.

Newb alert.... hrm... what is a scene name? My best guess is that it's a name taken up within a local community?

Your guess is correct, although the community need not be limited to the local one.  There are a number of authors and presenters who are known by "scene names" at a national or international level.  For example, Master Taino of Butchmann's or Race Bannon, author of Learning The Ropes.

Most informative, thank you. I'm curious, how do people usually come across a scene name? Do most people have one?

Don't worry, for now the light bulb over my head flickers, but some day it will shine bright with BDSM vocabulary.

Some people are given a name as a rite of passage.  However, I'd say most just pick one for themselves.  Typically, a scene name has a special significance for the person using it, or it can demonstrate humor.

My ID here is a variant on my actual middle name, Akari and so it ought to be pronounced car (as in the four-wheeled mode of transportation most people probably use)-ee. It is Japanese for "brightness," picked by my foster brother for what are very obvious reasons to anyone who spends more than a few minutes in my actual presence. Cloudy got tacked on because my mind and attention span are about as purposeful and directed as drifting clouds most of the time and, I love laying on sun-warmed grass staring at drifting clouds more or less indefinitely...

I've accidentally insulted a number of people by not responding to pet-names they chose for me.. It's never intentional, mostly I just forget the name was being directed at me. It takes me a very long time to get attached to new names.

In spite of that, I really like hearing about the meaning of other peoples' names, I find it fascinating. I was glad to find this thread revived and thus brought to my attention.

I know some women hate the term Miss, but it's been my experience women much prefer Miss to Ma'am. Ma'am has a tendency to make the younger ones feel old.

Steponme73 -> RE: What should they call you? (6/10/2010 6:15:54 PM)

I was raised to be respectful to women of all ages...Hence, I say Ma'am or Ms so n so. I think that works just fine.

I like using names, I don't really do pet names much, aside from the usual baby honey kind of thing. (I call all my male pals "baby"! horrible habit!)

It is a horrible habit and for the most part an insult, and mean no disrespect in my comment. Base on those comments you have made that I read, (some have been controversial and others I disagree with.) I find no reason to respond to or treat you with anything other them politeness and courtesy but also I believe there is a deeper wisdom you closely guard and hide from others.

I'm pretty sure somewhere a part of this question was covered not that long ago, but I can't seem to find it. Anyhow, I was planning on going further than that one post anyway, so here's my question to all Dommes out there, and subs/slaves can feel free to answer as well:

If you're chatting with someone online, that you just met, what would you prefer they call you? From my experience, a lot of subs will start calling you Ma'am right off the bat, using it throughout the emails they send. Would you stick with that term, or would you prefer they call you something else, such as Mistress, your profile name, or even your real first name? Madame might work, if you're already married, according to the dictionary. And, if I left any other terms out, feel free to list them.

Also, do you like certain titles, such as Mistress, used ONLY by those you've either met in person or have actually collared?

The same goes for the subs/slaves in your life. What do you call them? Their real name, or a title? When you've only just met online, or once you've met in person, or finally collared them?

I just thought it would be interesting to see the responses. You don't have to answer all the questions if you don't want to.
