When founded by hamilton they were part of the treasury department..."revenuers".Then I think they were transfered to the commerce department still "revenuers" and now they are part of homeland security...still revenuers but now they get to wear masks.

It depends on how picky you want to get.

POTUS is Commander and Chief of the Army and Navy.

Congress has the power to provide and maintain a Navy.

The Preamble says the government is established to provide for the common defence.

Marines get in because they're part of the Navy.

Status: offline 		I've a nephew who is making a career of the U.S.Coast Guard, and I can assure you he is just as much Navy (if not more-so) as I was in the Navy. Not only is he rescuing people in the Gulf of Mexico, but also running rescue missions during hurricanes, as well as chasing down drug smugglers in the Gulf of Mexico.  He triples as a rescue person, gunner and engine mechanic .
During war-time, they become part of the U.S.Navy....PERIOD.

I noticed the "subject" of this discussion.  How did he do it again????   I know he wanted to slice the pay increase to the military and naval personel.  He has already done away with the "Reinlistment" bonuses. What a jerk....he's never been even close to being in the service. Perhaps we need to insist that he go through SEAL training?

Article 1 section 8 gives the constitutional authority for congress to raise an army and a navy
Since the air force was part of the army it can be concluded that they are constitutionally valid.
The marines are not and never have been part of the navy.

Status: offline 		Pull the other one, it's got bells on. Marines were pretty well established as a necessary part of a naval force by the seventeenth century. If the constitution allows for a navy, then it allows for Marines as well.

Status: offline 		The Army and the Navy are the only two authorized in the constitution (Article 1 Section 8).

Originally, the Air force was part of the Army (Army Air Corp) and the Marines is a separate service branch within the Department of the Navy.  The Coast Guard can be brought under the Navy during times of war.
