Have you stopped beating your wife / husband / significant other yet?

With the World Cup in South Africa just a few days away now, a campaign has been launched here in England to highlight the increased risk of domestic violence that apparently occurs when England are playing. A study has shown that such incidents increase by 30% on such occasions, with drink a factor in 32% of incidents.

At one time the boys went off to footie and beat the shit out of each other to let out their frustration and resentment at having lost or to assert their dominance at having won. Football hooliganism got out of control and made English fans infamous around the world, generating strong legislative and policing measures that suppressed it until today its little heard of.

But have we displaced it to homes, where partners and children become the targets of angry violence rather than resolved it on the terraces and town and city centres?

More widely, given our football challenged readership is in the majority here, does society not need a venue for some men and young men in particular to exercise a certain propensity to confrontation and self-assertion in violence?

What's the source of the "study," LadyE? I ask because we had similiar reports here in the US in recent years, that Superbowl Sunday was the highest incidence DV day of the year. It turned out to be a complete fabrication.

As for the question of the the thread title, no, I have not. Nor do I have any intention of stopping. [:D]

I cant find the source of the study - it was reported on the local BBC news tonight and what was said is that this initiative has been undertaken with the support of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) following analysis of what occurred during previous tournaments regarding a spike in incidents - 2006 was specifically mentioned.

I just fail to see what is so interesting about a bunch of people booting a bag of air around a field, I mean what is it about the game that seems to incite the wanker in people. Normal people seem to turn into neanderthals when exposed to that thing. Perhaps the reason why it is tolerated still, is that it is seem as an outlet for the last vestiges of tribalism in British Culture, a case of better it be allowed albeit heavily policed so the neanderthals can let off steam in a contained enviroment.

But of Panorama tonight the future of UK football might even be in doubt, with such large clubs in some serious debt, and no, we don't want any more government bailouts to tax the taxpayer even more.

But yes, I can see the possibility of football violence being displaced  to the home enviroment seeing as what football seems to do to even some of the more placid in society whence they don a team supporter shirt and grab a can of wife beater.  I wonder though, if the majority of football was dominated by women, female football players on big salaries, would there be as much interest from the male, would there be the same problems.

If it came to be proved that domestic violence was a particular problem on tv footy nights, would it be banned from tv to cut the violence, if it did, that would also punish the more restrained football supporter, ( there are some, perhaps the majority, but no one ever hears about them), but something will have to be done if the so called national game is proved to incite domestic violence, I don't think it will be banned, it has too many positives, but perhaps an idea would be a supervised venue where the game can be viewed away from the home enviroment and er, no alcohol, as that also is a factor in game related violence.

And on the subject of alcohol, the constant condemnation of the British public regarding the stuff, perhaps the truth of it all, is it is too easy to get hold of and people have more available time to consume it these days as no one really has to work from sun up to sun down anymore.

I tend to think that football itself isnt the problem - it merely provides the ingredients requisite to what comes naturally to the species in an opportunity to be a member of a tribe and act out the sort of confrontations common to many social animals' behaviours - asserting dominance over another tribe or over territory.

What distinguishes it for this purpose, as opposed to other sports, is the nature of football as a game of the common man, who through his tribal affiliation may strive for a greatness in the eyes of others, by virtue of his violent prowess, that is otherwise unattainable to him in ordinary life, and which in his mind and the minds of his fellows is a corollary to the achievements of the players representing his tribe.

I'm pretty sure that domestic violence goes up here in the US during the NLF playoffs and especially on Super Bolw Sunday..

TheHeretic -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/8/2010 7:13:39 PM)

See, LadyE? It's achieved urban legend status.

There's always fight club but I don't think I should talk about that [:(]

Seriously though yes. I guess that's what college sports and the army are for. And gangs and football brawling. I'm not a guy so I'm not sure what other stuff they like to do but there are probably more things than that.

DomYngBlk -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 5:13:28 AM)

The incidence should get a harsh increase saturday night since england will lose to the USA in this minor sport.

Well according to my nephew (he's the football expert in the house) - Not a chance. Then he added - Well we are severely outgunned, but I guess there is always some chance, but I'm not counting on it.

I probably wouldn't bet a lot of money on the US in this one.

DomYngBlk -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 5:27:11 AM)

One can always hope....Betting on sporting events is illegal in Ohio so of course I wouldn't have any money on this game

LadyEllen -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 5:29:04 AM)

In the end its 11 vs 11 and (insert football manager cliched interview here)

The USA team should not be written off I would say. It has some top flight players in there and they have had the advantage of playing in our Premier League against the players in the England team.

Overall though, England should win comfortably. On paper its a far better team, but then anything can happen and you only need one goal more than your opponent to win. And it must be said that despite qualifying without the slightest of problems, England are not that convincing in my view, which is why they need our support, even if thousands of miles distant.

I wouldnt be at all surprised if the USA made it to the next round as runners up in the group behind England. Sadly though that is as far as they will get because in the second round its the real deal and the USA are likely to lose badly in such an encounter.

Ahhhh but if we are up one goal in the 90th minute...how many will be climbing the tower to jump off?

LadyEllen -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 5:33:03 AM)

If youre one goal up in the 90th minute then Stevie Gerrard will score two for England in added time. He's like that.

E

DomYngBlk -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 5:34:15 AM)

Yes but he won't even be in the game since he will be red carded and sent off in the second period. So what then?

LadyEllen -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 5:44:37 AM)

Youre not a Russian FIFA accredited referee are you?

Just odd that you might know in advance who's getting sent off when............ Triesman may have been onto something after all

DomYngBlk -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 6:06:34 AM)

Either that or I think that Demarcus Beasley has a photo of the team .....teaming up with John Terry's missus.....which should get the fireworks started. Either way as long as I don't have to hear God Save the Queen at the end....I will be happy.

LadyEllen -> RE: stopped beating your partner yet? (6/9/2010 7:38:02 AM)

awwwww. God has to save the Queen - 'cause so few others would

It seems many members from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland believe that because violence often follows religion then religion should be abolished. It is not people following religion but religion itself at fault. In that case because violence often follows “footie” then it should be abolished as well. Surely you must see it is the game of football that is at fault not the people playing or following it.
