Big surprises from Tuesday's primaries

People are unhappy. They've been unhappy for a while - through Enron and the dotcom bubble bursting, 9/11, two wars, Katrina. They thought Barack Obama would bring change but few have felt the changes he's wrought: Who can imagine how bad the economy could have gotten sans stimulus? It feels bad enough as it is. Then came the Gulf oil spill.

If 2008 was a change election, 2010 promised to be even more so. Incumbents are even more unpopular than they were in 1994, the Washington Post told us. Voters favor newcomers 60% to 32%, Gallup reported. Indeed, voters took out their anger at the polls, electing virtually any yokel who promised change or who railed at the Washington establishment, and sending home four congressional incumbents.

The narrative thus far? Throw the bums out.

That is until Super Primary Tuesday. Somewhere along the way, voters on both sides of the aisle re-found their pragmatism. They remembered that viability, not just purity, was also important.

In Arkansas, pundits were predicting the demise of two-term conservative Democrat Blanche Lincoln in a run off but voters proved them wrong and Lincoln wrangled a surprise comeback.

In Iowa, Republicans bucked the Tea Party trend and gave former four-term governor Terry Branstad another shot at his old job.

Likewise, in Virginia's Fifth Congressional District, six Tea Party candidates went home disappointed last night as the establishment Republican, State Senator Robert Hurt, ran away with the nomination beating his closest opponent by more than 20 points.

In fact, a surprising number of establishment candidates survived challenges in a season where Washington's blessing of felt more like a curse. South Carolina State Rep. Nikki Haley prevailed in an ugly primary, which included not one but two accusations of adultery, to win 49% of vote for the GOP nomination for governor (though she still faces a run off she looks likely to win).

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman handily won the GOP gubernatorial nomination (after spending $80 million on the primary, it would've been an incredibly expensive loss).

Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina beat out a moderate and a Tea Party challenger in the Golden State's GOP primary to take on Senator Barbara Boxer. And Rep. Jane Harman, a California Democrat, looks likely to survive the toughest primary the eight-term incumbent has seen in a decade.

You must be mistaken. I have read here that the incumbents would be tossed out on their asses by a grass roots movement.

You are right. I know I read and heard that there was widespread anti-incumbent feelings amongst the electorate.

When one takes hold, it's a good idea to take a look of what one is holding.

That's been the Teas shortcoming since the start.

It was a night for women. It's, once again, all about boobs.

Now that's a take I haven't heard yet--you should be a columnist!

They were smoking too much of the grass.

I am sure an explanation is in the offing. Someone will clear it up so my tiny brain can grasp how this actually is a voter revolution.

Okay, now that I have managed to derail my own thread, does anyone have any comments related to the apparent lack of this so-called voter momentum (tea party anyone) that was going to to sweep the incumbents out of office?

I think I would have to agree with both of you. I've seen it mentioned a time or two[8D]

subtee -> RE: Voter Revolution is Taking Hold.........or maybe not (6/9/2010 8:08:52 AM)

I think it shows that there isn't a national comment being made; the primaries' outcomes were particular to the states in which they were held.

willingtosuck -> RE: Voter Revolution is Taking Hold.........or maybe not (6/9/2010 8:13:03 AM)

This the problem with the American people they are unwilling to give up the status qua. This is one of the reasons I will not waste my time or gasoline trying to vote. At the presidential level we vote for our member of the electoral college. Anyone ever met him talked to him saw a reporter interview him? Like a Jury they are not bound by the bullshit that a judge tells them,he is not bound by the majority. He can show up and vote for Mr.Magoo id he chooses, even thought those he represented voted for Olive oil.I found out when you write ever congressperson and senate person in your state about a problem also the national senators and congressmen you become a Giant ping pong ball,no person in authority wishes to address or study or do anything but refer you to someone else up or down the line. The thing will change when NO votes are cast in any election for a period,it will halt the machine as they say.

Yes. Its all down to a conspiracy on the grandest possible scale to deny the republic and the sovereignty of the people through the implementation of a democratic process by which the majority view prevails.

Jeffff -> RE: Voter Revolution is Taking Hold.........or maybe not (6/9/2010 8:14:48 AM)

It is one thing to be angry and rail against the status quo. It is another thing to have an actual plan.

I think many voters want more than, "cut spending" as an answer.

There is a desire for change, but most folks need more than bad posters with bad slogans

Nonsense. I don't believe you've written to your representatives ever.

I have several times, and I always got a quick response and generally got action.

It's among the reasons I vote for them.
