Apparently, there are many poisonous  snakes in the gulf area.

Fuck it, I am not going to help in any clean up.

I HATE snakes

I am charming even with those two things working against me.

I would look your mother in the eye and say, " Hello baby". Her panties would be so wet and heavy , they would drop to the floor.....SPLAT!

It can be a burden being me.

See, I'm pretty sure that if my  mum was called 'baby' by an anteater she would collapse laughing,  no matter how charming said anteater thought he was...

Massive, massive inaccuracies in that story.  The FDA is in the late stages (as in, hospitals are already using the product on human patients) of approving Bioclon's Coralmyn product, which is the same freaking Micrurus antivenom as the Wyeth product was before their production plant got shut down for massive deficiencies including up to 300% batch variability in the product.  This was not good stuff to begin with.

Political boundaries are not always very taxonomically or biochemically meaningful.  Fort Dodge has massive back stocks of the Wyeth veterinary product, and there is no shortage of the much more expensive (and IMO clinically inferior to the Mexican Bioclon polyvalent, at least as long as they continue to do that final filtration process to remove all the long-chain fragments) human approved CroFab for general use on North American Viperidae envenomations.

It is fucking difficult to get bitten by a North American Micrurus, for various reasons both physiological and behavioral.  Good luck achieving that even if you pick the snake up with your bare hands.  It's possible, but still pretty damn unlikely.  Current field conditions in the Gulf cleanup efforts are unlikely to increase anyone's chance of exposure to this primarily fossorial species, and may substantially decrease them.

MSNBC got hit by the stupid stick when they published that one, but no surprise.  This story sucks and contains very little truth or accuracy. Ask anyone in the scientific community, in any field, what they think of the accuracy of popular news reports.  Be prepared for a lot of descriptive four letter words.

I believe that. All anyone has to do is read an article about a subject that they know well.

Then apply that to everything they read.

However, had I been the guy who lifted the lid on all those snakes in Indiana Jones?, The arc of the covenant would still be missing.

I fucking HATE snakes.

People misidentify the coral snake as the harmless scarlet king snake all the time and almost never get bit. AIUI the corals actually make pretty decent pets until they are inevitably correctly idnetified and then released/killed.

I hate snakes too, but I also know how to watch my ass around them. I am from an area with a bevy of rattlesnakes to contend with. You have to watch where you step and where you put your hands

Edited to add... I stepped on a snake once. and because I was near a city I did not think about the risks... it turned out to be a coastal rattlesnake....kinda scary!

Since then I always watch where I step.

I think they are gorgeous creatures actually. When I was a teenager, I used to do volunteer at a science centre and I got to feed mice to the snakes. However, I wasn't old enough to handle them.

I have to admit though, I'm used to seeing them behind glass where I can admire their pretty colours and form. I'm not so sure I'd be so brave face to face with an anaconda. But I'd say the same thing about an angry grizzly bear or a charging bull and I don't hate bears or bulls either.

Snakes serve well to remind humanity that no matter how progressed we feel, out in the sticks nature still rules.

Fast Reply-

There are certain species that require precaution when humans interact with them. The Real Housewives of New Jersey are venomous skanks.

Probably more snakes get trod on by feckless humans than anything else.

It isn't an issue, Jeff. You just need to understand the biology. All varieties of snake share a common allergy to #8 birdshot. Indentification is also much easier when they are not moving/hissing/rattling.

I saw about a 4 foot Mojave Green rattler that had been run over on the freeway this morning. It probably came up and struck at the car that killed it, too.
