TheHeretic -> Greene wins South Carolina Dem Nomination. WHO??? (6/10/2010 7:25:25 PM)

This story is pretty wild.

quote:

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The No. 3 Democrat in the U.S. House called on federal authorities Thursday to investigate how an unemployed South Carolina military veteran entered and won the state's Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.

"Here is Alvin Greene, unemployed, he goes into the Democratic headquarters and pays $10,000. That's no little bit of money for an unemployed person," House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said. "This guy, who is he? Where did he come from?"

Greene, 32, stunned the Democratic Party establishment Tuesday night when he handily defeated Vic Rawl, a four-term state lawmaker and former judge, for the party's nomination. Rawl, who had campaigned little but already raised $186,000, was forced to scrap a fundraiser planned for Thursday night.

Greene has not reported any fundraising, run any ads, or put up signs or a website in his challenge of Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint. He had been considered such a long shot that neither his opponent nor the media bothered to check his background, which includes a November arrest on a charge of felony obscenity.

Then we get this, towards the end of the article

quote:

Greene, who says he left the military last August after 13 years in the Army and Air Force, has said he paid the $10,440 filing fee by saving up two years of his service pay. On Thursday, Clyburn said he's skeptical Greene paid the fee himself and demanded that federal authorities investigate where the money came from.

Clyburn said state law makes it illegal for candidates to let someone else pay their filing fee if their candidacy is intended to damage another candidate.

Myself, I like the idea of an underdog, stealth candidate kicking the establishment's ass.

<sigh> It was a nice thought, while it lasted. Thanks for the link.

Yep. Next question. How did he get 100,000 votes, and beat the party guy 58-42??? (And if the South Carolina Republicans did it by cheating, let's put them in charge of getting our asses out of Afghanistan!)

Brain -> RE: Greene wins South Carolina Dem Nomination. WHO??? (6/10/2010 8:00:01 PM)

I think you are full of it and know full well this was a Republican dirty trick/plant and now you are trying to pass him off as some kind of ‘underdog’ - disgraceful tactics.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/#37627925

In the election Republicans were allowed to vote for Democrats and vice versa. Obviously Republicans planned this dirty trick.

This makes no sense. ALL candidates are damaging to other candidates.

Interesting that you can't be a felon and run for President--but apparently you can be a felon and run for Congress.

Maybe people just wanted change?

Weird and interesting story.

But I`ll give rich the benefit of the doubt, we`ll say he was duped.

Dirty trickster or dupe. It`s either one or the other.

I smell a spoiler.  This is gonna be fun to watch!

Owner59 -> RE: Greene wins South Carolina Dem Nomination. WHO??? (6/10/2010 8:45:47 PM)

Yup.This is such a goof and it`s only going to get better.

How much does anyone want to bet that his court photos show him wearing that same non-fitting suit and the same green tie?

Does SC have open primaries?

If the Republicans managed to get this guy to run and got him on the Democratic ballot and managed to get 50,000 or 60,000 Republicans to vote for him with nobody noticing until after he'd won in a huge upset - I'd be very impressed. That's far more smoothly orchestrated than anything I've seen come out of the RNC in years and years.

I think this issue came up back when Tip O'Neil was Speaker. As I recall, a known felon was elected to the House and he (Tip) was asked why the Congress didn't expel him. The Constitution sets no limit on a Senator or Representative having a criminal record and Tip O'Neil said that the House leadership had discussed the matter and the consensus was that if the people of his district wanted to elect a known felon to represent them, that was their choice and it wasn't for Congress to deny the elected Representative a seat in the House after the people had spoken.

What? You think I was duped into thinking the story was wild? I'm sticking by that. Duped into liking the idea of the candidate they never saw coming? I like all sorts of crazy ideas. Hell, at one point I liked the idea of Barack Obama running for President.

Yes. But has the usual laws about against voting simply to disrupt the party nomination or for any other such dirty trick type action.

Elisabella -> RE: Greene wins South Carolina Dem Nomination. WHO??? (6/11/2010 12:14:08 AM)

Heheeeeeeee that would mean more Republicans voted in the Democratic primary than Democrats did. I lol @ the idea that there are more people who care about fucking shit up than people who care about their party's nomination. It tastes like delicious delicious chaos.

Rich, that IS a wild ass story, I agree.

servantforuse -> RE: Greene wins South Carolina Dem Nomination. WHO??? (6/11/2010 4:21:08 AM)

It looks to me that one more seat will go to the GOP this coming November. Thia guy will never beat jim DeMint...

popeye1250 -> RE: Greene wins South Carolina Dem Nomination. WHO??? (6/11/2010 11:57:54 AM)

Senator Jim DeMint is very well liked in this state.
He's not the type to pull any "dirty tricks" especially when they're unnessessary. He's very well connected and responsive to The People of this state. He has "Town Hall Meetings" where you can call in and ask him questions. Odd for politics but he strikes me as a very humble person.
Now, if people were talking about "wide stance" Lindsey Graham I'd believe it. He couldn't care less about the people of S. Carolina.
One of the News stations was speculating about whether the "Tea Party" put Green in as a "plant." But again, why would they need to? DeMint is doing a good job and is far ahead in the polls.

popeye1250 -> RE: Greene wins South Carolina Dem Nomination. WHO??? (6/11/2010 5:40:33 PM)

Oh boy, I heard an interview with this guy on the radio and he's a fucking Dope!
He can't string two sentences together. This may be a Republican "plant" although I don't know why they'd need to do such a thing in this state.

It's not necessarily Republicans. But someone is sitting in their evil lair laughing really hard right now and I wish I could buy them a drink because this is brilliant.
