My first dom had me read the book, and because I was just finding out about the lifestyle, I had a strange reaction to it.

First of all, The Story of O is a French translation, and must be judged as such before one dismisses it on its literary merits. It was not meant to necessarily be a work of literature, it was a love letter of sorts....

Now, seen in that light, as being written for a particular individual, and knowing I did not read it in its original language, I liked The Story of O. I found some of the scenes sexy, in a weird sort of way. It is not erotic the way I am erotic, but it is a hell of a lot better than the cmail wanker letters I get from wannabe erotica writers.... in this way The Story of O rocks!

I liked the book. Her objectification and transformation was interesting. I actually enjoyed it. As for the movie, the 10 dvd version seems to stick closest to the book. I didn't find the characters wooden, they simply don't resonate with lots of emotion. But then again not everyone does.

I HATED the book. I felt it was a misogynistic piece of trash written by a very insecure women who was having an affair with her married lover...in her words, she says "I was neither young nor pretty, so I had to find other weapons". Yeah, right.

I actually find the book quite upsetting. It reminds me of the "snuff" porn stuff. I didnt find it erotic at all, just women hating.

I love every movie the Coen Brothers made, but "The big Lebowski" is epecially dear to me.

Book was better than the movie, but both were awful.

The Story of O was actually one of the few books I just couldn't finish. I'm a big reader, and I know that it was translated from French but I, personally, couldn't even get halfway through before getting bored. It just felt really awkwardly written, which was a shame considering I'd heard so many others say what a wonderful book it was.

I loved the book and movie (assuming it is the soft-core 70's version).

I wouldn't ever let anyone think it describes anything approaching real life, but it wasn't meant to be such; it was an outright fantasy, and as such, is incredibly erotic from my perspective.

The movie worked better as a soft-core, gauzy version; taking things as banal and ordinary as whipping and anal rape and overlaying them with the veneer of polite society is one of the great erotic techniques- having fully dressed people stand around politely discussing the most intimate details of a woman's body like an object for instance, is a recurring element in most fantasies I have read....or, uh, had.

What I find most interesting, is that it is so female-centered; O is the only character approaching full realization- Stephan and Rene are just cartoons, barely sketched, sort of a couple of Kens to her Barbie- accessories to her erotic fantasy.

I wasn't aware that there was more than 1 version of the movie. Perhaps I'll check them out? I spend a great deal of time watching movies.

I read the book, have seen the movie, but I preferred the unmentioned 10-hour miniseries produced a few years back (German-made, shot in Brazil, language in English although you get the idea every once in a while that some things are dubbed). I know of several people who didn't really care for the miniseries as I did, but I thought that it fit the spirit of the book better than a 90-minute movie could.

Well-put, FBS: both the book and movies are ugly and sadistic, in French or otherwise.

Greetings all....

Yes, two movies. One the multi-part series that was very close to the book. The second was the pastel colored S&M mainstream movie from I think the 70's. The series is much better than the other. As for the book, it is one of those things which can be considered part of a general BDSM cultural literacy requirement. If you are at all interested in the general subject then you should know what it is about.

Yes, many Dommes and feminists hate it. <grins> The author also wrote another book years later trying to say how wrong she was in the first book. I have yet to read that but if I had access to a copy, I would do so. I am something of a voracious and omnivorous reader. Over all tho...I think the book was worth reading and I have read it 2-3 times in the years I have owned a copy but not for a decade or so.

My thought is that the movie is stupid. In her you see this super-slave. But in her masters you see a bunch of ham-fisted idiots. Yeah, I got it that she was all submissive. What I did not get is what she saw in those fools.

The story is truncated, the acting incredibly poor, it looks so soft focused that it's easy to believe that the camera lenses were coated on vaseline, the sex scenes look like they were trying to show people how not to have a good time. The actors were the most wooden performers since thunderbirds, the music soundtrack was stolen from a funeral parlour.
If you did it with Keira Knightley as O and Keanu Reeves as Rene and Gerard DEpardu as Sir Stephen with a phillip glass soundtrack, then it would be worth watching. Anyone got a better cast in mind?
