Airpig,why do you think it is most Canucks live right along the US/Canada border?

Could it be a longing to live here?

No, its to save time on our annual winter trek to Florida [:D]

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 7:49:58 PM)

But you gooootta know that the reason that US citizens live near our border is to become Canuck citizens so they can have access to our Healthcare [8D] [;)]

It would be unthinkable for one state to have that many NHL teams.

LanceHughes -> RE: 51st state (6/13/2010 8:30:23 PM)

LOL!

Instead of East / West play-offs, of course, there would be North / South regional playoffs.

Why do most Canadians live near the U.S. border ? - Yahoo! Answers

There are two major reasons why most Canadians live near the United States border.

The first reason is economic integration. Canadian exports account for greater than 80% of trade to the US and greater than 50% of their imports from the US.

Canada is one of the world's most important suppliers of agricultural products and one of the few developed nations that are net exporters of energy. In addition, the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA) of 1988 eliminated tariffs between the two countries.

The second reason is climate. Average winter and summer high temperatures across Canada vary depending on the location. Winters can be harsh in many regions of the country, particularly in the interior and Prairie provinces which experience a continental climate. In non-coastal regions, snow can cover the ground almost six months of the year or more in the north. Coastal British Columbia is an exception and enjoys a temperate climate with a mild and rainy winter.

You are a buzzkill Brain...I still maintain that its to cut precious "No-Snow" hours off the travel time to Florida...so there!

God forbid, it would be another appalling victory in the eternal quest to turn the entire planet into a docile herd of slack jawed consumers.

Vive la differénce.

In another thread Owner referred to Canada as the 51st state, which got me thinking...if All of Canada were admitted as a single state then we would be 2nd only to California (and that not by much) in population, and thus we would be a major power block in the House, however if each province/territory were admitted as its own state then that would mean 26 seats in the Senate...a powerful block there...regardless of which way it were done it would throw a major spanner into the works, given that by US standards the vast majority of Canadians are Democrats (if not worse).

Fun to speculate on at any rate.

Vote as one bloc? Come on now.....you can't even get people in Hull to vote the same as people in Ottawa.....

Moonhead -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 5:42:30 AM)

I'd suspect the banana republic approach (that's working so well in Iraq) would be a lot more likely than Canada being taken into the union as one or more new States.

Aneirin -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 6:10:18 AM)

What's this, is America Empire building ? Adopting areas of people and calling them states, not countries, anyway I also heard some time ago perhaps whimsically that Israel was a state of America.

Moonhead -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 6:17:38 AM)

Israel isn't, as far as I can see. Whatever else can be said against Netenyahu, he's hardly a quisling playing the Sooty to Obama's Matthew Corbett, is he?

Aneirin -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 6:20:58 AM)

Yeah, you're right, it's more the reverse, Netanyahu is the Corbett to Obama and it seems much of the western world too.

I wonder though, who in the world is the ultimate  Matthew Corbett.

Yeah, just what we need.

There are certain unwritten rules down here about any car with Canadian plates, and it can be summarized by stay as far away as possible.

Do you guys have driving tests up there or does everyone just automatically get a license?

PALEHORSERIDING -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 8:51:11 AM)

Yeah Canada should not join the falling empire to the South of us their education system blows and is getting worse, Their culture is becoming even more and more decadent, They do things that go against their own long term security just for short term profit, Their job market blows etc etc etc while we have some things in common with the US there are vast vast differences which we should keep apart. That and the fact most canadians are vehemont anti american government.

I know here in toronto, if you have ever driven along the 401 or the DVP you would understand it completely, Its dog eat dog out there, absolutely horrendous, specially if we have "active" weather. Like rain or snow.

I find the fact that somebody who probably pulls over and has a crying jag if she should encounter a roundabout while driving around Europe has the brass neck to be saying that completely fucking hilarious, to be honest. The Canadians are worse drivers than the Americans? I find that hard to believe, and so would she if she'd ever been to Stratford in August...

Fellow -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 11:54:07 AM)

Fate of Canada is well known. It will be the member state of the North American Union. The central (nominated, non elected) governing body will decide the economic issues and it will set the monetary (Amero) policies. The borders will be symbolic.
