In another thread Owner referred to Canada as the 51st state, which got me thinking...if All of Canada were admitted as a single state then we would be 2nd only to California (and that not by much) in population, and thus we would be a major power block in the House, however if each province/territory were admitted as its own state then that would mean 26 seats in the Senate...a powerful block there...regardless of which way it were done it would throw a major spanner into the works, given that by US standards the vast majority of Canadians are Democrats (if not worse).

Fun to speculate on at any rate.

Yea, it could be worse...they could be radical right cinos. (conservative in name only)  More than a far fetched fantasy. Canada would never...never allow itself to be added to the US and on fiscal and social grounds.

Lucylastic -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 12:29:58 PM)

I find the fact that somebody who probably pulls over and has a crying jag if she should encounter a roundabout while driving around Europe has the brass neck to be saying that completely fucking hilarious, to be honest. The Canadians are worse drivers than the Americans? I find that hard to believe, and so would she if she'd ever been to Stratford in August...

OMG are you talking to me??
I used to live close to hemel hempstead, with the seven roundabouts in one!!! roundabouts I can handle, no problem, the M25 at rushour I can handle, the M1 the A1 A40and the trip down to cornwall via oakhampton and plymouth, without going over the tamar,.

Apart from the fact that I dont actually driveover here or in the UK, I come from a family of speed demons and roundabout rollers.... hubby used to take one on the way to london colney at 95 miles an hour, bless him.
but yes the 401 and DVP at rush hour are horrendous

Nah we need you to vote in the UN...anyway I think we may be better off becoming part of Canada.

There ya go. Especially with the end of, so I've heard...dual citizenship. I am thinking Canada doesn't want us though.

Lucylastic -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 12:35:06 PM)

Fair enough. I beg your pardon, then.
I've seen a few American drivers around Stoke who seem to be puzzled that the rental firm didn't give them a Shriner's go kart, though, and as for London and Stratford, don't even get me started...

Lucylastic -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 12:43:13 PM)

pardoned:) I was born an raised in hertfordshire, moved to toronto 20 odd years ago:)
almost half and half now

DesFIP -> RE: 51st state (6/14/2010 12:44:36 PM)

Look folks, if bringing you into the union means we need more roundabouts, then I for one am voting against you. I hate those damned things.

Yeah Canada should not join the falling empire to the South of us their education system blows and is getting worse, Their culture is becoming even more and more decadent, They do things that go against their own long term security just for short term profit, Their job market blows etc etc etc while we have some things in common with the US there are vast vast differences which we should keep apart. That and the fact most canadians are vehemont anti american government.

Wow, all of that because I said you guys can't drive for shit.

There are certain unwritten rules down here about any car with Canadian plates, and it can be summarized by stay as far away as possible.

Do you guys have driving tests up there or does everyone just automatically get a license?

You have a point.  We drive as if it hasn't occurred to us that the other drivers have guns. [;)]

I know here in toronto, if you have ever driven along the 401 or the DVP you would understand it completely, Its dog eat dog out there, absolutely horrendous, specially if we have "active" weather. Like rain or snow.

Oh Lucy, Lucy, Lucy, have you ever been to Florida?

We have the I-95 Daytona Speedway where if you drive the posted limit of 70 mph you will be passed by every car on the highway doing 90 plus.

Except for the Canadians who will be in the high-speed lane doing 50.

Yep, I can confirm that we in Quebec drive as though running out of time.....even though the end result is just beating the other guys to a red light. Speaking of which, yellow lights mean, speed up, stop signs mean stopping is optional, and pedestrian crossings are paint on the roads.

They wouldn't be so puzzled if you starting driving on the correct side of the road.

I was going to say the right side of the road but that would have made things more confusing.
