Four weeks after the nation's worst environmental disaster, the Obama administration saw no need to accept offers of state-of-the-art skimmers, miles of boom or technical assistance from nations around the globe with experience fighting oil spills...

Where does oil need to be skimmed that's sitting idle?

Actually, the fact of the matter is that two days after the platform blew up some 13 countries offered to send their oil-skimmers, some of which are bigger and better than anything that's been used thus far, and other oil-spill control/reclamation equipment but Obama said thanks but no thanks.

If you recall, 2 days after the event occurred BP was lying to Obama and the rest of the world about the level of damage, and still to this day BP is not willfully handing over information

It was only a few days ago that it was reveled that between 40-60000 barrels per day have been leaking, a sum much larger than the 1000 per day BP stated in the first 2 days

That's really the question, isn't it?

Not hard to see national interests at play here either.

Here's my problem--everything, including this, is aimed at predetermined partisan slams. It gets us nowhere.

Did the previous administration set this up with cronyism and lax regulation? Yes. Did the current administration, even though new, drop the ball by not catching and fixing that lax regulation? Yes.

What needs to be done now? Is it being done?

I think the answers to these questions are also yes, don't you?

That's probably one reason why the Kenyan turned down the skimmers in the first place: it's a damned if he does, damned if he don't thing. You can just imagine the shitfit the Elephantmen would throw if he ceded a role in a clean up in the gulf of Mexico to (htoch, ptoiee) foreign governments...

And nobody's mentioning that all this stuff costs money too. Money we don't have.

It's also going to kick the shit out of the recovery.

What we SHOULD talk about is what Carter did in the 70s. Conservation. Reduced usage. Clean, green energy. The stuff he drew criticism and ridicule for. The programs he started that Reagan ended.

We would be in a different place today.

Yep.
You wouldn't be in Iraq, for a start.

I heard on the news last night that the Dutch govt. offered to send skimmers but that they were refused.
Also, they said that there are hundreds of miles of that tubing that they use to contain oil in a warehouse up in Maine!

Could you translate this into non jibberish?

There is oil that needs to be skimmed in the gulf of Mexico. Every drop skimmed is a drop that wont foul a beach or kill an animal.

And if Obama had not refused help, there would be less oil in the water today.

That's pretty simplistic.

The weather needs to cooperate, for one---or it all would have been burned off from the start.

Dispersents were used early on and still--that's oil that isn't going to be skimmed. The thought early was that wave action would dispel this.

Oil is sinking--the plumes. Skimming won't do shit for that.

Bring all those skimmers here--and just what would be different?

You seem to want to be under the impression that all the oil would be gone. Total nonsense.

yes, regarding the weather, there is indeed a ticking clock as hurricane season starts. Time is of the absolute essense.

Which is why even 1 day delay in getting the skimmers operating matters.

And Yes, Obama ordered the use of Dispersants. And he should be jailed for it. Fucking idiot.

MM, you can get help for your poor reading ability. I think Obama has a program for adults who can't understand what they read. IF not Catholic Charities can help you.

Why do you think I seem to be under the impression that all the oil would be gone.

I stated, "And if Obama had not refused help, there would be less oil in the water today." and it is absolutly true.

It is so sad, that you are confused by that sentance.

Has anybody who leans to the right in either of these threads addressed MM's question as to how "Maverick" sore arse and caribou Barbie would have handled the problem any differently yet? The only thing I can think of meself is that McCain might not have raised his voice to the board of BP...

I think that you out of the gate turned from your unsupported foreign skimmer theory to (incorrect at that) sentence structure attacks pretty much killed any factual debate right from the start.

Sorry. Thicker skin here.

I did from the start. Instead of backing it up....you went for willful miscomprehension of the sentence.

Have another drink.

Whyever not? Every fucker else in this thread has. I'm starting to wonder whether you'd even recognise a fact if it bit you in the arse.

no, he pretty much said you were a dumbass.

you are correct in that if we had allowed the dutch skimmers in earlier there would be less oil in the water.  FUCKING DUH.

Here are a few reasons why that didnt happen, and note that they are still burning and using dispersants and this calculation is incorrect in that the amount of oil flowing is far greater than their capacity.

And it is negative to the admin so you arent going to learn anything.
