I am generally of the thought that the problem is with the people and not the dog.

My dad had a gorgeous white German Shepherd. He could interact with people and other dogs outside of his territory but on his territory he would only listen to my dad. He was ok with my step-mom, until my dad died and then after that it was so-so for awhile but when the dog aggressed towards her that was it: she had him put down.

Andrew Vachss has a love for the bad ass breeds of dogs.
He is also a specialist in juvenile justice.
In both cases he thinks it's usually nurture over nature.

One of the things he really likes the classically more dangerous breeds for is serving as therapy dogs and court escorts for battered children. The kids see this massive beast and once they get used to them then the kids do something they haven't done in a very long time: they feel safe.
This is very effective when the child has to testify against their abuser. They know the guy sitting behind the table won't dare hurt them now.

I have not read this thread other than the OP...

I have been bitten by a dog, Doberman pinscher/German Shepard mix, it chased me down and bit me. I was walking down the street, I was not on the dog's property, and it chased me down and tried to take out my entire calve muscle (there were teeth marks surrounding the entire leg and if I had not been running it would have ruined my leg). The doctor was the one that pointed out that this was the case when he heard what breed bit me, telling my parents that I was a very lucky little girl because this breed pulls when it bites... I was only 10 years old and I still have the scar. The family this dog belonged to, they did not teach the dog to be a bad ass. It was a family pet.

Pit bulls likewise bite and tear. These dogs are bred for a purpose, like Dobbies are, and this purpose is not to be lap dogs. I have been around sweet pit bulls. I have been around sweet Dobbies. By and large though, dogs are somewhat true to their breed, which is why we breed them in certain ways in the first place. The sad thing is it is not the dog's fault that they were bred this way, it is human intervention.

I am a confirmed dog lover. I have not owned a dog in many years because my life is not suited for that responsibility, and it is a responsibility. I view owning dogs that are capable of doing massive harm to other living creatures as an extra burden, and it disgusts me that people get these dogs not only as penis extenders, but because they think it is fun to fight them (and there are many places that this still takes place). I would like to see the breed die out, because of the reasons people breed them is revolting. Some are used to fight or kill other animals, some are used to protect drug dealers (quite common in that sub culture) and still others feel they want a "bad ass " dog because they are pussies...None of these are good reasons to adopt a pet

I don't hate pit bulls, I pity them, they are a much abused breed.... and the people who abuse them suck

I quoted this because it is true from what I have read on the topic... people have been breeding these dogs for meanness. In other words the mate dogs that have aggressive traits to create a strain within the breed that has a dangerous temperament ....

My favorite dog was a border collie, but we lived in the mountains on acres and my neighbors had livestock and they did not mind her playing with them....

After my father passed away we lost our home and my mom moved us into an apartment, the only place we could afford. She gave my dog to a family with a farm... she insisted it would be cruel to keep her in the apartment. I know she was right today, but I missed that dog a great deal, she was my best friend

Just to reinforce the idea that small children shouldn't be left around dogs, here is a posting about a dog who killed an infant in Quebec...

Actually, I have had plenty of dogs over the course of my life that were the most docile creatures in the world. Regardless of that, it is never a good idea to leave ANY dog, no matter the size alone with a child. I had a dog that was so well trained, I could leave a bowl of ice cream (which she loved) on the floor and go out for the day and she wouldn't have touched it. I had a Newfoundland mix that my son would pull around by the tail when he was in a walker and she would just walk backwards without complaint. Doesn't mean that it would be responsible to not always keep a watchful eye.

ETA:

And that is for the safety not just of the child, but for the dog as well.

I'm so much against owning a pit bull, that I've gone poof on girls that own these nice lovable pets. It's sad but true.

I probably would like you. I’ll go take a look at your profile right away. I like dogs myself. I had a miniature schnauzer.

I mean the sort of idiots who keep them for blood sports and dog fighting. I have even read of some jerk who kept one to attack the police if they ever raided his home. He was a drug dealer. Recently a woman in a city not far away has been prosecuted. It seems her dog had been trained to attack anyone in uniform.

So what is bsl ?

Odd isnt it? It works just the same with guns, cars, booze and even children; some are just too stupid to be allowed to have any of them for fear of the abuse that will result and the damage that will then follow.

So it seems the solution is not to ban or control any of these things, but to limit and control those amongst us who are witless idiots.

Its not the Dogs, Its the people who own the dogs that cause the issues and people who buy the wrong dog for the wrong reasons.

A show worth watching is the Dog Whisperer series with Caesar Milan, I dont agree with everything the guy says but he speaks plain common sense.

Dog bias is a real issue these days with people going off half cocked and ignorant and its the dogs that suffer, my pure white 90 lb Boxer girl is a good point as she gets mistaken for a pit bull purely because she is all white and THATS what is stuck in peoples heads.

Big white dog = pitbull.

I too have trained Dogs and done obedience, I did it for free as a community service for many years and ive seen Pitties and staffies a plenty come and go with child and adult handlers in tow, and if theres one thing I learned from my time training? It is that small fluffies are more savage and dangerous than larger brachy breeds but because their attacks are rarely fatal it doesnt make the news frenzy.

My opinion on all this hysteria is this,

Owning a Pet be it dog, cat, horse or hamster is a RESPONSIBILITY, Live up to your responsibility or hand in the animal.

Dont even get me started on Horses lol

First of all if you have a brain you know to keep dangerous animals away from some peole like the infirm or children.

But in my day, a pitbull weighs what, maybe a hundred pounds ? I've been bitten by dogs and I bite them back, literally and I don't let go until they yelp. Fukum. They got ahold on one arm, the other one is punching their eyes out. I'll beat that motherfucker into a coma if necessary. So I have to lick my own wounds, big deal, I have been shot in the face, and been in car wrecks that would fuck with your mind, wondering how anyone could walk away.

Fuck that dog, Deal with the pain and use the rest of your body to fuck that motherfucker up, and do it fast.

Exceptions are dogs that go for the face. But those are not the norm and usually have been trained to do so. In that case get a good lawyer because ou are about to get everything it's owner has. I would.

Actually if you've ever boxed or sparred, you should know how to block, then it is a matter of how mean you want to be. The dog has one mouth, you have two arms. You can beat the SOB into submission or pluck it's eyes out. Your choice.

Of course not everyone is that way, but if your dog targets the weak it is a predator and needs a bullethole.

Period.

Sooooo more dogs to be put down because their owner didn't restrain them. I feel for the woman I really do but who knows how they were trained - or if they were at all. Who's to say how their owner treated them.

I remember when the county I lived in instituted a law that made owners of pits and rotts jump through all sorts of hoops and go ten extra miles just because of the dogs' breeds. I built taller fences and jumped through every other hoop they asked because my rotts were worth it. They were sweet, loving creatures who made my life far better. My fences were erected to protect the dogs not the assclowns who feared them.
Oh... the dog attack incident that made so many in the county push for the law was an attack by a German Shepard who was defending himself after a neighborhood shithead teenager attacked the chained up dog with a stick. It had nothing to do with the breeds demonized by the papers.
