What a complete and utter tool this BP chairman is, I hope they physically rip  him a new asshole, the  pompous jumped up pratt, Ive just been watching the coverage of the hearing and I'm utterly disgusted with the smug smirking  asshole supposed to be giving answers.  Im thinking deeply nasty thoughts regarding his punishment.
I dont recognize many of the committee except the chappie with the humungous nostrils and Stupak, but some of them are a freaking joke. Especially that Barton bloke.
Two tools in none day and its only half over wheeeeeeeeee

What exactly would you like him to say? If BP are currently running an investigation into what went wrong then how would you react if what he said today wasn't actually the reason for the spillage? I'm also sure that you realise that people as high up as him in a company don't get involved in the day to day runnings of each individual oil rig and that the people who work on the oil rig on a daily basis know far more about what happened than the chairman does. However as those people are most likely American, and Obama is hell bent on referring to BP as it's name 10+ years ago, it's no surprise that they're not being questioned too much.

I have been watching it too and I have a completely different perspective. I think our Congress is wasting the BP execs time. They are complete and utter fools and it's so embarrassing listening to their questions The BP guys are doing a great job maintaining their composure in the face of this idiocy. It's a dog and pony show for the public to ensure these guys will get re-elected. These execs should be left alone until the well is capped, and then the facts should come out as part of an independent investigation that doesn't include anyone from Congress.

Funny that it would take our own Congress to make me feel sorry for BP. I felt the same way when our elected officials were grilling the Wall Street bankers. What a joke.

I agree with you brainia. These members of congress must be the smartest people in the world. They are an expert in everything, even deep water drilling. The only thing they are experts in is spending other peoples money. Wait for the complete investigation..

That's pretty much what the press here have been saying. Obama is using BP as a scapegoat for all of his failings thus far as President, namely his healthcare bill which is going to cost you American taxpayers an arm and a leg! I'm waiting for one of the Western leaders to query Obama about Clinton knowingly flooding the market with toxic sub-prime mortgages which were the main cause of the recession the world is suffering from at the moment.

Anyway back to the football for me and hopefully watching the frogs lose :)

But that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying our Congress is at least as big a tool as any of the BP execs. As for the rest of your post, I think you are smoking too much of something while watching the game.

I am not excusing BPs culpability. I am saying our Congress sucks. But it's what the people want, so what the hey...

I saw a bit of it. Very capable guy takes charge of huge oil company that's previously been run for profit over safety for a while, he makes big thing about going all out to improve safety (partly why he got the job). Freak accident occurs, politicians start asking him why he wasn't, personally, inspecting that oil rig...

I reckon he was being too politician like, the questions (that I saw) were so stupid, he looked ridiculous by not giving straightforward answers....but (I figure) had prepped for a tougher time, and wasn't prepared to give answers ending in 'you idiot'.

I agree with you on everything except the "freak accident" part. From what information has come out so far, this was a completely preventable accident, and BP should be held accountable. I just prefer that all time and energy be focused on solving the problem at hand, rather than answering to our elected twits and the 24 hr news pundits.

Why's that? Are you claiming that the toxic American sub-prime mortgages weren't the main cause of the current global recession? If so then you are very wrong I'm afraid as Clinton knowingly flooded the market with mortgages which were never going to be paid back in full. That is why Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae went bust which started the whole domino effect, that is why Northern Rock over here had to be bailed out, likewise with RBS and why Lehmann Brothers went bust, why Merrill Lynch had to be 'bought' by Bank of America, why one of the Spanish banks had to be bailed out by the Spanish government last month etc. That is a far more important issue than the oil spillage and I'm waiting for one of the leaders to ask Obama about that seeing as it was his country, his party I believe too, that started that.

Alas I don't smoke. About the only good thing that I do.

Yes it was something that could've easily been prevented. BP, like all of the oil companies, cut corners when it comes to safety issues thinking 'well it will never happen to us'. Hopefully it will now mean that all of the oil drilling companies will be forced to spend more money to prevent this from happening again.

Braniac:) I also feel the committee sucks... but to be fair it is the first time I have ever watched one so Im looking at it with virgin eyes, there are too many things to pick up on, but Im not impressed so far. Meetings to have meetings and sub, sub-committee bullshit always puts me into a bad mood, and general faux rage just adds to it
Now Barton has apologised says he misspoke LMAO
SNORT what a surprise.

Tiny, Im a brit,  and I still think Hayward is a wanker of the first order, I have absolutely no illusions that he had or even has  a clue what is/was going on, AND that the investigation isnt over, now wether thats because they are hiding something or  the congressional  committee should have waited until all the info was at his fingertips is up for debate and opinion.

Jeff, not a tool in my book:)

Okay, freak sequence of events causing an accident that would probably have been prevented with a rig not built on the cheap.

Re the committee - I don't know about the usa, but I watch a fair few parliamentary committees (I am that boring) and compared, what I saw of this one was extremely poor. Just a show for the media...quite lowbrow media....

That is what I'm saying. It's off topic so I'll respond briefly. The toxic mortgages were only the trigger for the meltdown. The true cause was the deregulation of OTC derivatives trading. There have been many threads on that topic here in recent months. I'll send you links if you like.

And the toxic American sub-prime mortgages were the main cause of the current global recession.

Yeah, what she said. The problem wasn't risky mortgages, there are always risky mortgages for the more adventurous investor....the problem was the banks buying into what they were sold as packages of triple A (ie safer than many national governments) mortgages, that were in reality risky.
