What are you tryin' to say?

In spiritual terms, "God" is all that is good and light, and "Devil" is all that is bad and dark.

I don't really believe they're two separate concepts, more like mirrors of each other, but it can be argued that when people do positive things they are taking the path of God and when they do negative things they are taking the path of the devil.

It's not really clear cut, because most actions are a mixture of both, but when one shines through as nearly purely one or the other, imo it's the divine aspect or the infernal aspect of mankind.

Choosing to follow one of those paths is still a choice, and the responsibility is always there.

My "credentials" can't possibly take a hit from a group that can't debate a topic without resorting to strawmen and semantics...something you have never once been able to avoid, except by posting meaningless links.

This from a man who cant post a single one to back up his bullshit.

Hows that god-gene theory working for ya?

ORLY. Why dont you give some examples.

Here is a link to a book that covers this concept...

To be honest i can't remember the specific names of the cultures, but I can find them out if you would like...

You do realize that there are multitudes of ways that people live and very little is determined by biology

http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/LV/LVAprMay99p38.html

edited to add... what does ORLY mean?

I still think that whatever segment of the population that this book might possibly represent rather pales when we look at the totality of mothers that love and tend to their yung' uns.

Juss sayin'......To infinty and beyond!!!!

Yes, this is true....

There are some cultures that discourage loving wee ones because they die a lot...

I mean, if you have 8 kids and most of them never reach adulthood it helps if you never bonded with them in the first place

I'm not a christian either. And I don't think Lucifer was the devil. Sure he might have been, but from the little bit I've read of him it just sounds like a case of "history is written by the winners."

I for one do not wish to be crushed at this point in time. I want to live to see this topic resurrected yet another day.

But it would be a good topic for a new thread if you were so inclined.

Oh drat, I almost caught you in a teleological argument... in fact I believe you are tempted to make one, which would be oh so deliciously ironic!

[...]

No you didn't. I would never do such a thing. My argument is not one of design but of results. But, ultimately not a topic for this thread. I do believe it is deserving of it's own thread, for no other reason than there are other smart people here who might participate in that one, but not this one because this thread has been fucked for some time now. I think some people would avoid this one on principle and miss a good discussion.

I'm familiar with the story of Lucifer as the angel of light that fell because God asked him to serve man, however, Lucifer loved God so much that he didn't want to put anyone else in front of worshiping God.  Now, if you're referring to the fact that Catholics turned the gods of the old religions into the devils of the new, then, yes, that, too.  And now, I think the devil is going to force me to go to the bar and have a beer.

Yeah, seriously.

One thing that bothers me about these debates is that it's always framed in "atheism vs religion" rather than "atheism vs theism" which would IMO be a far more interesting debate - these always get muddied up with tangents about the failings of organized religion.

I still think it is relevant.... the yardstick

I don't have the same yardstick as you... we aren't measuring the same things... and that makes your unequivocal statement that theism is inherently inferior to atheism moot in my mind...

You keep on beating this drum of "scientific method" as if this is all that matters in life... is that all that matters to you in this world? is that your only yardstick?

Its not a yardstick, its a process. And it is the only process that can be relied on to produce reliable, actionable direction.

Dude this is the thing I take issue with:

quote:

quote:

ORIGINAL: tazzygirl

As much as we object to the classification that religious people are inferior.

I don't know anyone who has made this claim. Another strawman, tazz.

Like I said, whether or not it's true is irrelevant. She claimed she knew nobody who said it and now she's saying it herself.

I have never said people who believe are inferior. Point it out please.

I have already acknowledged that DCWoody did in fact make the referrenced statement. I also said it was an insult and not a strawman. What more do you two want me to say?

Tazzy, what I am saying is that what you present is a strawman arguement.  That is no different to the way someone suggested that all people who follow religion have lower IQs... again... strawman.  Again - it only shows that both sides of the camp are subjected to strawman arguements over and over and over...

Without getting into the point you're trying to make, (just to be fair) did an atheist actually write "all" or did they refer to a study showing a correlation between IQ and religion?

It was the latter, which is why I said it wasn't a strawman.

I guess that's true, I might have read too much into that, but since they have inferior IQ's, what do they have to balance it out?

Nothing, that's really the only issue I had with your post.
