we leave for Montreal on the 28th for a week

Oh neat! You'll be in my city. What are you coming here to do?

A meeting with clients for a couple of those days, but we thought we take some extra time to check out the jazz festival and had hoped to see the Carifete parade... though I understand that has been canceled this year.

Of course we'll be there for Canada Day but I'm not quite sure of the festivities planned in Montreal.  But to be honest, Firm and I aren't big partiers nor do we find big, loud crowds fun.  I suspect we'll end up just trying to enjoy more quiet type pursuits... visiting the old city centre to take in the history and architecture.  The Pointe-à-Callière holds particular interest for me, if we have time.

Well enjoy your time here then. Festivals aren't in short supply during the summer here, that's for sure. The Old Port is great and definitely the tourist part of town. If you care to have ideas about other areas that are more authentically Montreal, just let me know on the other side!

If my funds recover, I am wanting a short trip to Grenada in Spain, principally to view the much vaunted Alhambra and other Moorish remnants. A short trip, a few days, but I have not been out of the country for a few years, it would be nice to see something different.

If funds did allow, which I severely doubt, Morocco would be the place of choice as I have always been sort of interested in North Africa after reading many novels and other books about the region in the past, so much so the place sticks in my mind as a place to go some day.

But the dream vacation is India, but I want to spend a month or so there to attempt to absorb the place.

What wonderful destinations. I haven't done Spain or Morocco myself, though have visited their neighbour, Portugal which I absolutely fell in love with.

India would be interesting, though personally it would not be a dream destination. However, I will be going within the next year and I do look forward to it.

Hello Angelika,
I'm going to the Phillipines to speak at conference. I'm taking an extra week or so to travel and to look around. I'm also going to the southern part of Korea to visit a "slow village" where they live in a pre-industrial manner and you can experience traditional methods of weaving, cooking, living. I'm very interested in that. One of my co-workers is going with me.

Also, I'm looking for a place to go for a week that is quiet and I can be alone to write. And then.... back to the old grind stone!

best,
sunshine

Sounds absolutely lovely :-)

Of course, there are always places that I want to go.  I just don't have the cool million sitting in the bank to fund it all.

This is really the only reason why I really want to win the lottery. I have no desire to change my life dramatically with an influx of money or own super fancy things, but I would just adore the luxury to travel wherever and whenever I want.

LadyAngelika,

What a wonderful thread!   I won't be going on vacation this year, which is fine because I had a great one last summer.  I will be adjusting my work hours, though, to allow for more down time.

If I was planning a trip, it would be the France.  Why?  Food and wine, of course!  It has been a dream of mine to spend a few months completely immersed in the culture and be able to explore and "live as if".

That's how I like to experience a place...setting up roots for a period of time and just exploring the area.

Thank you for the kind words, BonesFromAsh :-)

And I agree with your philosophy of exploring a place authentically and immersing yourself in the local culture with the local natives. France is a lovely place to do this, especially En Provence.

Of course, some places are technically safer than others to do this.
