I wonder how much of this obstructionism is based on cynicism to reach a political advantage and how much is ideology.

Obama: Republican Obstructionism Hurts U.S. - CBS News

President Barack Obama accused Republicans on Saturday of blocking legislation that would boost the nation's economic recovery and lift a $75 million cap on what oil companies must pay to families and small businesses affected by an oil spill.

"Unfortunately, the Republican leadership in the Senate won't even allow this legislation to come up for a vote," the president said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "

And if this obstruction continues, unemployed Americans will see their benefits stop. Teachers and firefighters will lose their jobs. Families will pay more for their first home."

Meanwhile, the Labor Department reports that 903,000 Americans will lose unemployment benefits by the end of this week because of the impasse in the Senate.

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell objected to a unanimous consent vote in the Senate to pass a standalone extension of federal unemployment benefits.

You know, I can understand political differences.

I can understand opposing things you do not agree with.

I cannot understand the GOP using blanket opposition as a political strategy.

Gotta give Obama credit for knowing how to use political strategy. And the GOP just seems to keep hand delivering it to him on silver platters.

.....or for that matter...Democrats using blanket, lock step support as a political strategy.

Given it is now a foregone conclusion that President Obama has zero chance of re-election, look for Democrats to ratched up the rhetoric as they become more desperate. One last shot at convincing people an empty suit is the same thing as a leader. .....Teleprompter Courage.

He is running out of time and they know it - but many simply do not care any more. They are abandoning ship....

On top of that BPGate makes him look worse every day. ...and there...in the distance...the rumble and dust cloud of approaching cavalry as the Clinton supporters begin to come out of their foxholes.
Once Sen. Clinton resigns as Secretary Of State....the REAL artillery barrage against President Obama will begin - and it will be from behind his own lines. Putting Sen. Clinton or some other "moderate" Democrat of note (...imagine that....Sen. Clinton as a "moderate"?) is their only hope in 2012 as President Obama will be joining former President Carter in the "flash" political dumpster. Life will be hard there.....he is not half the man former President Carter is.

But Tazzy is spot-on. The Republicans hand President Obama things on a silver platter.... then they whine about him on political talk radio.  There is a lack of balls that is appalling. They don't need a minority leader in Congress - they need a Domme with a ball stretcher. It's too bad the late President Reagan is not still with us....he might have been able to instill some guts - or absolute shame -  in the GOP.  (Grand Old Pansies).

This....from a right-leaning independent....

He does whine a lot, and a lot of folks seem perfectly happy to enable him doing it. How about a headline that reads "Bipartisan majority oppose Obama efforts in Congress?"

Good luck with that. Democrats love to disagree. It's how Republicans got this far.

But you are looking at the full picture of Nixon, Muse. At the 17 month mark (now that we are there, ) President Obama has set quite a pace to take the title. How is he going to react if the Repubs take the House?

The wider point I'd make is that obstructionism is hurting the U.S.

Deliberately holding up appointees, for example, as has happened over the past few administrations, over matters not even related to the appointee, is indefensible. Someone is going to have to step in to change the rules.

But more generally, used to be, decades ago, people sat down with the opposition and worked out compromises. Now the feeling is that if an opposing view didn't win, the problem was we didn't oppose strictly enough.

It has become about power at all costs. Even the justice system has become overtly politicized over the past decade. The only check is the American people (remember the permanent Republican majority?), but even here, the trend is toward not saner government, but toward opposition of government--essentially a desire for mob rule. Just look at the rhetoric in many threads here.

Will it change? Not in November, however the elections go--that will only change the names on the same old patterns.

Whyever not? They're dead set on the other party getting no credit for improving anything, and the easiest way to achieve that is by blocking everything that goes through senate that they possibly can. If legislation doesn't get passed, it can't have any beneficial impact on anybody, can it?

Nixon "isn't even close"?

There you go, folks. Partisanship isn't going to get any blinder than that.
