I don't know why but there is something about James Patterson's writing style that irks me.  I read a lot of his books but finally decided no more ha ha.  Maybe they seem too formulaic....not sure

Sometimes, the casting just doesn't work.  They've never found an actor who'd be 'right' for Ian Rankin's 'Rebus', for instance. Morgan Freeman was great as Alex Cross, though.  I'd read most of the books before seeing him play the part, and my brain was happy to 'give up' my own mental image of Alex Cross in favour of MF.

YES!

Of course it is only my opinion but I think Morgan Freeman was way too laid back for mister Cross... in all his books Cross is fiery almost hot tempered. Also Cross is devoted to his grandmother and family and the family is always half the story…but not in the movie. And lets not forget he is a ladies man...that did not come off well in the movie either.

I do like Morgan Freeman but just not in that roll.

Butch: thanks, I'm putting The Jester on my list!

childoftheshadow: would you recommend his other non-Cross books, then?

ElizabethAnne: I love the Stone books too; Selleck has made 7 Stone movies, not all are book adaptions, though.

wanders: usually, I don't like overly formulaic writing, but if it hits a sweet spot with me, it doesn't bother me; Parker's novels are a good example of that.

Peon: even though I saw the movie, I'm just not placing Freeman in my mind's eye as I go; they keep mentioning how Cross resembles Muhammed Ali, and that's what seems to be sticking a bit.

Me too! Very short chapters full of very short, choppy sentences. I've read a couple and I simply cannot stand them. He is extremely popular but I don't like him at all. Sorry, just my taste.

I would also tend to agree on this except....where there is a good formula paired with excellent writing skill....I happen to like that. The JLB Robicheaux novels Level mentioned are a perfect case in point. They're rather formulaic but beautifully written[:)]

Level,

Wow, I didn't realize there were SEVEN!

Thanks for the info.

Pop Goes the Weasel and Kiss the Girls are my favorite James Patterson books - I really love the Kiss the Girls movie. I think I stopped reading that series after The Big Bad Wolf. I like Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series a lot too.

I know, I know . . . things are never quite right.  It's much worse for Inspector Rebus.  In the books he's a beer-gutted, grizzled Scots bloke in early middle age.  But there's literally only a handful of Scots actors who even approach fitting the bill.  I mean -who can you think of?  Robert Carlyle, John Hannah - but both are lithe, skinny men. . .  There are literally only a couple of Scots actors who've got the gravitas.

There needs to be a very big, black guy to play Alex Cross, who at the same time can carry off all the 'inner turmoil' stuff.  I can't think of one who could do that, offhand.  Maybe Yaphett Kotto - but he's getting on a bit . . . .  Thing is about Morgan Freeman is that he's always good with the 'inner turmoil' stuff.  I mean, Wesley Snipes could never bring that off . . . .

She's my favorite by far, I also like Sue Grafton for lighter reading, I enjoy the humor in her books.

Denzel Washington comes to mind, he can do the inner turmoil, John Q certainly portrayed that well or the guy on Criminal Minds.
