Just out of interest from other members here from other parts of the world, what are the British, how do they come across to you ?

Oh, it was just a conversation I was having earlier on another website about British culture, do they have one and why it is they seem to need to take on elements of other cultures. But the British have projected themselves all around the world, they have their own oppinion of how they are, and how others see them, but my thinking is, is that correct, have they actually asked others how they are perceived.

From what I hear, we're generally seen as sensible, reserved, soggy, rottentoothed, sexy accented people, with a self deprecating sense of humour to cover the slight sense of inadequacy from not ruling the world anymore. But I'm probably biased. It often seems like the British stereotype has, to some extent, gotten 'stuck' 100 years ago. Could just be family guy though.

According to Hollywood we are characterised as being either Jason Stathem or Hugh Grant. These are the two basic types of British. On the other hand Hollywood regards Scottish people as either being Billy Connolly or Ewen McGregor. It doesn't know what the Welsh are yet, as this strange sect hasn't made it that far afield.

Apparently when americans first heard recordings of Tom Jones they thought he was American and black. Wasn't til they saw him they realised he was Welsh and orange.

_ they seem overly formal- uptight and too concerned about the time. at times they seem to have a brain- things thought out in a meticulous manner. That is a plus. the overly formal part can be- well -- a put off.

Anerin asked a direct question. He is among the more interesting posters here. My exes father was British. So my impression is much to do with him and his kin.

As far as "the accent" goes, non-Brits tend to think of the British accent as what we Brits might refer to as 'BBC' English. There are not only very different accents in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (which is also part of Britain) but there are rich regional variations often within small geographical distances.

I used to think that too, and it's true I'm sure....but as a chisit, I've discovered they can't really tell the difference. I sound dead posh apparently. Not complaining in the circumstances.
