So what you are saying is that a moments neglect deserves us to condemn these people to a fiery hell...

You know, it sucks that people do stupid shit and have accidents, but for crying out loud, criminalizing everything is part of what I think makes America suck....

I am saying that anyone who is old enough to own a car and drive and go to the store and own a dog should know that you do not leave them in a car on a hot day for even a few minutes.

I am sure they will sentence them selves to hell, as they remember how dumb they were to do such a thing.

There are times when a few moments of neglect are a few too many.  When it come to leaving a dog in a hot car and "not noticing" that it did not get out, well......you may call it neglect, I have another word for it, but I will go with neglect to be sweet and all that.

Forgetting kids and dogs in cars are things that I will never understand how they could happen.  It is just moronic as hell in my mind.  Your mind may see it differently, and that is just fine.

i agree JAS, something like this is completely inexcusable. and "friends" or not, i would absolutely have those people reported to the ASPCA and every other local animal welfare agency. this is not a case of a simple mistake, "oops i forgot to turn off the curling iron." it is a grievous, utterly careless oversight. the suffering that poor dog went through, physically as well as emotionally....it breaks my heart and sets me steaming at the same time. such people should stick to pet rocks.

Jeffff -> RE: The Heat and Pets (6/21/2010 4:05:31 PM)

It's true, for years I could not go into a pet store without seeing a picture of my face on the wall of wanted posters.

Oddly enough, while it was hot enough in the car to kill them, it wasn't hot enough to cook them.

Had they been guinea pigs, we would have worried about trichinosis.

Cut me a break. What if that had been their sleeping child? Would you chalk it up to a "mistake" and let them go? Owning a dog is a responsibility. If you can't remember that your dog is in the car, you are not being responsible.

Then again, maybe they thought they could talk to their dog and it "consented" to being in the car in the heat.

It's those laws in this country that keep whack jobs from being able to do whatever they want to the detriment of the rest of us, including protecting those animals. Come to think of it, it's those same laws that allow you to say you think it sucks. Freedom cuts both ways.

Please, if you live in a hot climate, consider leaving your pet(s) at home where they're cool and protected - i know i'm hugging my doggie tight today.

Or remember them, since they depend on us.

I live in hot climate.  All through summer the news warns us about keeping pets and children in the car in this weather, reminding people that on a 100 degree day, the temp in your car rises exponentially.  I don't even think "rushing through the store" while your dog is in the car is a good idea.  Why risk it???

Your friends must be heartsick. I know I would be.  Hopefully if they ever get another pet, they won't take such gambles with it.

That would depend on the situation.... How long was the child left inside the car, etc. You do realize that the heat in a closed up car can be fatal in minutes. If a child was thought to have left a car, and didn't and the parents discovered this 5 minutes later, yes, I would call that a tragic mistake...an animal is not a child, though. We do not keep as close of tabs on them...reread the OP, they thought the dog was not in the car.... you did see that, right? The dog was alive on the way home

Owning a dog is a responsibility. If you can't remember that your dog is in the car, you are not being responsible.

"They then went home, unloaded the car in the driveway - and didn't notice that he had stayed inside. "

So you cannot see a situation where the car is open and they are unloading the car, and thinking that the dog had exited the vehicle... it could have happened to me, I am not a holier than thou sort of person and I realize we do not see things the way they truly are... this is like thinking the lane next to you is clear when it isn't, and you don't see that car in the lane next to you.... blammo, family of 5 dead.... sure, we can deride the poor asshole that caused the accident, that didn't see, or was driving tired, etc, but human beings are imperfect....

They took the dog into the store and left the windows cracked, fuck lady, what is wrong with you?

Even this is a really bad idea, by the way, when the weather is hot.

Why? As you know, I have lived in hot weather (central valley hot)... my sister has pets and now she has a baby (yes she finally adopted her baby girl)... we go places with her animals and her baby... even hot places. You have to open the vehicle up and get the air going before putting my niece in, but it does not stop us from going places

I read the OP as they took their dog to the store, not into the store.

It is a bad idea to leave pets and kids in the car in the heat, even with the windows cracked open.

I misread your post.  I didn't see that you said they took the dog into the store.  Assuming a store approves, that's a much safer idea.  But it's not what the OP's friends did.

I thought they took the dog into the store... you are right...

It is wrong to leave a pet in the car, even for a moment....the fact remains the dog was alive when they got home

Please go read this, especially if you think leaving a dog in a car for even a few minutes is ok.  It is not, ever, never.  Do not do it.  Leave them at home.

I have never left a pet in a car...

edited to add.,.. it is possible I may think the pet exited a car and accidentally leave them.,.. that is called an accident.. it is a mistake, It is unintentional, it isn't something to call the cops over

Obviously you have never made a mistake.

If it had been a sleeping child you would want to send that person to jail?....What would that accomplish?

Unbelievable.

Our prisons are not full enough of people that are pot smokers, etc... we need to start locking up people for making a mistake.... but fear not, most of us fortunately make only nonfatal blunders... like when I broke my toe two years ago dropping shelf on it... it is paining me tonight, so yes, I still regret that boneheaded mistake

That wasnt directed to you, I just want folks to realize that even a few minutes can be deadly.  I even fessed up earlier that I would not actually call the cops on friends who did this, I would hug em why they cried.
(/sarcasm/)
Course, since all my friends are perfect like me, it would never happen.
