I am looking for a decent list of GOOD BDSM based films to watch. I know there is always the almost universally slated Story of O, and something about a secretary, but I was wondering just what films are out there that give an accurate representation od D/s and M/s as a whole. I want to avoid the BDSM porn stuff that seems to fill the heads of most of the n00b Doms who come trawling this site on the lookout for fresh meat, but more the sort of stuff that shows the lifestyle as it REALLY is.

Suggestions please pleeeps!

Well - it doesn't show the lifestyle as it really is, but it is good fun, in a very English sort of way - Preaching to the Perverted.

Chick flicks based on any book recommended by Oprah tend to be extremely painful to watch...

An accurate portrayal? Some flicks hit or miss with that and unless you're specifically looking for a documentary, you're probably going to come up short.

There are some past threads on movies in the Alternative Lifestyles in the News section. One with a quite detailed review list, if I recall correctly. You may find some information there.

Part of the problem, I think, is that it's difficult to find a film that shows any "lifestyle" as it "really is." Jean Painleve's "Love Life of the Octopus" comes to mind (it does an effective job of showing the lifestyle of sex crazed octopodes as it really is, as far as I know), but in general films do not present anything resembling an accurate picture of their subject matter. They present a distorted view that is far more watchable and marketable. So it goes.

I think it might help if you narrow your focus, and your question, just a bit. What in particular are you interested in seeing portrayed? Some films are likely to be very good aesthetically while others hit some raw emotions right and others may have very good scenes depicting certain types of play.

You have to accept the innate limitations of the medium of film. You also have to accept the limitations on what kinds of film will and will not get financing and distribution. Films about any kind of "lifestyle" (especially anything that is regarded as taboo by a significant portion of a population) are almost always going to be, in a general sense, distorted and wildly inaccurate. But there may be particular films that get some particular details quite right.

There are no films available that provide an accurate representation of my view of any of this. It depends on whose vision you are seeking an accurate representation of. Home shot video would come much closer than any mainstream fare.

OA is right. There are many plot lines that incorporate BDSM into it.

I really enjoyed "The Image" which is also known as "The Punishment of Anne" and I think "The Mistress and the Slave" as well. But it's mostly F/f though, with a little M/f in it too so if you're looking for something more F/m oriented, this one won't fit the bill for you.
