Your Opinion Wanted: My company says that nothing is happening, that everything is Ok. but I submit to you the following facts:
  1. in the last two months they have lost 14 employees and they have not posted any openings to fill their positions, yet the Charlotte office is hiring like gang busters, for those same positions.
  2. the GM (General Manager) and two departments at my office are moving/being moved to Charlotte NC, That one of those departments is the Accounting Department. Last Year, they Closed down two departments. saying that it was just business.
  3. That a person in my office, applied for a position in Charlotte and was told that basically they weren't allowed to do so.
  4. That the Chief Operating Officer is making a semi  surprise visit to the office tomorrow.
I don't know but I smell a rat, Seems to me they are planning on closing my division and they are just going about it as secretly as they can.

Did you ask your company with explaining it via your stated facts?

Not to be flippant at a time when you're probably very worried and under a lot of stress, but I do hope your resume is up to date. It sounds to me as though you'll be printing copies very soon.

Good luck, man. It sounds as though you've pretty much got it figured out. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

ALSO   As an additional point, we are being told that we must sell a product on 4% of our total number of calls. That we must do this for six months straight with out fail or we will be fired, starting in July.   That about 60% of our work force is at 1-3% and only about 1 to 2% is actually making the 4%. Anyone think this sounds like they are trying hard to thin the ranks? and make it look like a performance issue so they can try to get out of paying unemployment?

Nope because they have a nice clause in there that says "Any duties as Assigned" so they could make me the freaking janitor and if I told them go to hell they could fire me for it.

And always have a plan B, and a plan C.

They do the "other duties" here too.  Put it this way- if you are not methodical on your job duties- then regardless of the deal- you are a target.

So just do the best you can do- and have a plan B in life.

Sounds like you have the writing on the wall figured out pretty accurately. Stop back and let us know what the COO's visit was all about.

Most states are "at will" employment, meaning that either party can terminate the relationship.  There does not always have to be "cause".  A job description is not a contract.

ALl of my people have job descriptions.

The last line reads, " any and all other assigned duties"

That is a great way to fire someone...:)

Any duties as assigned won't fly in court. Not in the US at least. That would mean that you could be hired as a janitor and then required to perform open heart surgery.

But the writing is still on the wall, so dust off the ole resume and update it. No matter what, if they want rid of you there is not a damn thing anyone can do about it.

Always remember business 101. Loyalty has no mass. Unlike anything affected by gravity it can go up and not come back down.

Best of luck. Just start preparing and don't make any major purchases right now.

I work in computers.  I tell people all the time, if it seems like it's bad, its bad.  If your gut says, this isn't right, its not right.  Pay attention.
As for unemployment they can fight it but they won't win.  It is probably going to end up like a lay-off.

I agree with the other comments arout writing on the wall and resumes.  They've already done some major downsizing.....based on what you said, it sounds as though company relocation is next.  It's happening a lot these days, I'd be making my back-up plans.

Trust your instincts.  I like the " don't spread rumors " part. Not to be a doomsdayist, but: The hospice company I worked for had many similar type things happening, looked like the writing was on the wall. We all saw a lay off coming, I went to the ED and asked him point blank if I was going to be laid off soon < I had least seniority at 8 years >, he told me No, and don't spread those kind of rumors. Fast forward two weeks and I got " the call" on a Thurday afternoon, saying he wanted to talk to me first thing in the AM. Again I asked if I was being layed off and he told me he didn't have time to explain, but that he needed me in the office first thing in the AM and to keep it just between us. Private convo and all. I was layed off, as I suspected and was more than prepared for when I went to chat with him Friday AM, much to his surprise.
Early June it was announced that a national home care corporation had bought out the hospice I worked for.

Best of luck to you !

Agreed. I always have my resume up to date even if I'm happy exactly where I am professionally.

I'm not sure if you are working in labour or in a professional function. If the former, I'm less aware of how networking happens, but if you are a professional, I might suggest networking with those you know on something called LinkedIn (if you aren't already on it). I've used that system for about 7 years now with the most phenomenal results in terms of finding talent and business opportunities. You have to use it properly though.

The best strategy in life is to always have a strategy in place.
