There are a couple of threads going on here that have me thinking. 

How long would you argue your point on something you really believed in?  Would you expect to change anyones mind on page 42, if you were unable to the first time you offered your opinion?

I know certain topics bring forth strong feelings.  There are a few that get me feeling that I need to put my 2 cents worth in, because, well, hell I know I am right about everything dontchaknow?

But once I have expressed my self, I may sit and watch how the thread goes, but I will not, time after time, repeat the same argument, even as I alter a word or two with the hope that this time they will get what I am saying.  I can be amazed at the argument someone makes for their "side", and still think they are so wrong it makes me giggle.

I guess it is my feeling that I know folks will not agree with me on everything, some folks will disagree with everything I think.  And that is ok, because I know I am right.  I can respect they see things differently, but I am confident enough in my thoughts and beliefs that I see no reason to try to beat them into others.

This is not to put anyone down and to say that anyone is wrong for wanting to really really convey a point they are trying to make.  I just want to try to understand..... why bother to keep on and on and on and....well, you get it I am sure.

Yeah, really, dunno.......sometimes I feel very strongly about something, but that isn't often.

Sometimes, it's just seriously going to depend.  Is the whole thing wrapped up in going back and forth with one person, or are there a ton of people making comments about comments that came up?

Whether we're laughing, debating, goofing around, or serious, I try to answer just anybody who is addressing Me or asking Me some kind of question about what I wrote.  Yes, it's just a message board, but that's one of those old fashioned courtesy things from the way I was raised.  There are a few exceptions to this (probably somewhere between five to ten members) that I prefer not to engage in directly at all.  They've worn out My patience with their antics and I wouldn't care if they never showed up on the screen again.

Here, I have heard of folks gonna kick the "everlovin dogshit" out of someone, but the dogfuck, well, thats a new one I may pay to watch!

LP, never thought of it as being a courtesy thing.....thats something to think on for a bit.

I think it's a matter of how you interpret a healthy debate. It isn't kicking the dogshit out of someone, although clearly there are people here that cannot intellectually honestly present a point and stick with it. They may seem to get brutalized, but in reality it's really them doing it to themselves. I don't think most people are actually attempting to get someone to accept their viewpoint as their own, but acklowlege and understand it (with the exception of P&R, those people are a whole other animal and no I don't get it either).

I agree with all you wrote Laurell, but the red part is what I think is the motivating factor for many also.  I think there are some subjects that preclude (I think that thar  is a word that means makes it impossible to )understanding from one side to the other.  Abortion, death penalty, spanking or not spanking kids are some that come to mind.

If I wanted to start an endless thread that would break all CM records outside of polls and random stupidity, I'd start a thread defending husbands who cheat on their wives. This issue pushes so many buttons that the topic would explode to 10 pages in a matter of hours and it would keep rolling thereafter.

Generally a non stop thread is being driven by emotions.

As for being right, I've seen posters deny objective impeachment.. If someone who can't be wrong likes the world a certain way, that's the end of the story. That's when all reasonable people wish a jury could intervene.

I come here to have fun not change anyone’s mind...I often play the devil's advocate to spur debate. Lets face it most we talk about in this particular forum is not fun and games...So if the subject is not fun the debate often is. I figure anyone who is tired of the repetitive posts should just stop reading the topic. Complaining and whining is worse than arguing.

Oh I agree, some of the people that post here will never see anyone else's point at all or even attempt to have a logical and two-sided debate. I don't tend to continue with them, as I really question their intelligence to begin with and arguing with them seems incredibly nonproductive. However, sometimes other people are involved in the debate and have valid points. I know that many have the perception that we are here to spit our opinions out to one another and argue if others don't get it, but honestly I learn about myself from other people's opinions as well. Questioning why they think things is sometimes part of that process, sometimes I'm just pointing out what a raging idiot they are....from your perspective, I would guess it's difficult to tell which.

Occasionally I enjoy a healthy debate and pending the time to give it, will join in one on here if there are intelligent participants with interesting points of view.

I think there have been several times I commented in a thread with a certain mindset, a debate was created with another poster or more, other perspectives came to light, more thinking, more commenting, etc etc etc... None of that was to try and change anyone's mind, just express different points of view. Shine a light from a different angle.

I avoid getting very emotionally invested in any discussion and will generally not debate with a person/s that appear to be narrow minded and overly passionate. Those are a waste of time.
