I agree LaT, unfortunately it's difficult to tell in this medium if someone really is being overly passionate. I've come to realize that we have quite a few people that think many things are heated or passionate when I don't see it that way at all. Shrugs.

For me, the warning signs are things like.......personal attacks, a dramatic change in posting style, usually with a lot of abnormal (for that person) typos, repeatedly saying the same things without acknowledging the other person/s contributions or continually belittling other's opposing contributions. Things like that are clues that it's just not worth continuing because the person is too emotionally invested in being 'right', not in discussing.

haha I typo because I'm on the phone, on the site and in IM's at the same time, it doesn't have much to do with my passion for a topic....see? that's what I mean, I think it's difficult to infer that type of thing in type.

Gawd did I start a whining thread? I will beat me severely cause that was not my intent. I love to watch a debate. I love to watch someone who feels passionately about something talk about it, even if I disagree with them. Maybe I am mistaken in thinking they are trying to change anothers mind......this medium is hard to judge intent on sometimes. Thanks for the inputs. I will definately give it all some thought. Some times a dick slappin contest is just that I reckon.....

No, no I wasn't referring to your thread, but I'm pointing out that I'm a bit dismayed at the number of people that do start whining threads and see so much of what is typed here as personal, it's become rather common unfortunately. It just makes me think that what we think we are conveying isn't necessarily what is being received. I agree sometimes it is just a contest, sometimes though you learn something. Then again, I'm not sure everyone is here for the same reasons. By the way, that whole self beating thing is kinda hard and not so hot, I don't recommend it. [8D]

It is the person who thinks their opinion on the validity of a particular thread gives them the right to make light of it...or to call someone stupid, idiotic, or hijack the thread to show their distain. If I feel that way about a subject and don't want to address an issue directly... I just don't post and move to another thread that interests me. Butch

---FR--- I don't mind going a few rounds with someone in an honest discussion of some topics. However, there are some forums in which I rarely respond to anything, though I do read through them a lot, simply because a large percentage of the "regulars" in those forums will change my wording or take what I say out of context in order to try to make their point. Other times they will nit-pick non-essential points to either try to discredit my opinion or try to make their position look better. When that happens I simply bow out and leave them to their nonsense. Often I don't have the time to sit at the computer for hours bantering back and forth so I simply state my opinion and leave, at which point they can take it or leave it. If I see the same topic scroll by the next time I am on the site I may or may not check to see where the discussion has gone.

I refuse to argue with people...period. Once I make my point I let it lie. If they wish to believe something else then so be it. I shrug my shoulders and walk away. It's outta my hands and not my concern.
