Lets see if America's farms and orchards are inundated with job applications from all of those angry white 30-somethings who are constantly accusing immigrants of "taking our jobs."

Go ahead, strap on a pair of your favorite prosthetic balls and take those jobs back. Let us know how it goes for you.

Or don't. But if you really don't WANT those jobs you accuse immigrants of taking from you, it's time to get just a little bit real and be thankful for those who are harvesting your lettuce and picking your apples and grapes, doing back-breaking work in miserable conditions for pitifully low wages so you can get your groceries on the cheap.

Time to man up.

Immigrant farm workers' challenge: Take our jobs

SAN FRANCISCO — In a tongue-in-cheek call for immigration reform, farm workers are teaming up with comedian Stephen Colbert to challenge unemployed Americans: Come on, take our jobs.

Farm workers are tired of being blamed by politicians and anti-immigrant activists for taking work that should go to Americans and dragging down the economy, said Arturo Rodriguez, the president of the United Farm Workers of America.

So the group is encouraging the unemployed — and any Washington pundits or anti-immigrant activists who want to join them — to apply for the some of thousands of agricultural jobs being posted with state agencies as harvest season begins.

All applicants need to do is fill out an online form under the banner "I want to be a farm worker" at http://www.takeourjobs.org, and experienced field hands will train them and connect them to farms.

According to the Labor Department, three out of four farm workers were born abroad, and more than half are illegal immigrants.

And don't count on a big paycheck. Farm workers are excluded from federal overtime provisions, and small farms don't even have to pay the minimum wage. Fifteen states don't require farm labor to be covered by workers compensation laws.

From your source.

So this is what we are promoting? The encouragement of farmers, both small and large, to be allowed to continue with these types of work conditions? Even for illegals this is appaling. THIS is exactly what part of the problem is. Instead of addressing work conditions and improving them, we have now a challenge for american workers to lower their standards to do these kinds of jobs simply because illegals are willing to do so.

Well, I think it's a bit "tongue in cheek," tazzygirl. Colbert's a comedian, he has a satirical show...you get the drift. The point of this, as I'm perceiving it, is to encourage people to STFU about immigrants "taking all of our jobs" when they are apparently only "taking" jobs no one else will have. I really don't think anyone involved in this story wants others to work for the ridiculously low wages and under the poor conditions that the immigrants are. It's trying to draw attention to it and all that jazz.............luci

Here is how it works brain…I have a strawberry farm in Missouri lets say. In my area there may be a few unemployed people but not enough to harvest my crop in the required time. Of course people living full time in my area are looking for and or employed in professions that will provide income all year so they know a job with me is strictly temporary and will not provide for their family.

They cannot stop their work and harvest my crop so we need migrate workers.

BUT

Now my teen son has graduated school and is looking for a full time job. Not too many years ago if he did not want to continue his education he would have taken a roofing or landscape job…or maintenance at the local Walmart or McDonalds… Not great work but a living. Now however these businesses for the sake of profit no longer hire locals but illegal workers they can pay, often below minimum wage, without documentation, benefits and social security taxes.

If you don’t believe me go to most any apartment complex in your area and see who is cutting the grass…Or find a roofer at work and see who is nailing the shingles.

There is a problem...not their fault, they are just trying to provide for their families…but they ARE taking jobs from ours.

Actually if they hire american workers they will have to pay minimum wage at least, also benefits such as social security and workers comp. They would also have to pay taxes and be subject to certain regulations as to how you can and cannot treat people doing physically demanding jobs.

But hey, why put up with all that "doing the right thing" BS when you can get you a bunch of illegal immigrants over here to use and abuse for slave wages and no benefits. After all its not like they can report you or call the authorities when you mistreat them.

and it ain't like any american is going to shovel turkey shit for minimum wage starting at 4 am in 40 below weather in minnesota in february neither.

and it is the perfect trouble with our not upholding and executing the federal law and bust the employers, instead of making state laws that bust the individuals.

If they can't get jobs here, they ain't got a reason to come.  Enforce the federal laws, making it so not worth an employers while to scoff at it.

Recently (as in this week), Fox New's website 'reported' on a concept similar to this. While I can't find article in particular, hopefully the neutral explaining I give will help you. Either by recalling this yourselves (since some of you only watch Fox News and no other news source), or through another source.

----(Source as I remember it)-----
The Secratary of Labor, this week, announced, that illegal immigrants can report businesses that use illegal practices to the National Labor Relations Board, without being attacked, for being an illegal immigrant. Since the NRLB, nor the Department of Labor determines law related to national security (that would be the Department of Justice, or Homeland Security's role actually). The idea, is to remove unscruplous business men from preying on illegal immigrants, and give them the same wage a US Citizen would recieve.

The source also quotes several Republicans in office and running for local, county and state, as being strictly opposed to this concept. That taxpayer dollars, should not be used on illegal immigrants.
---------------------------------------

Now, I do think these Republicans have not thought this concept through to its end. But then, Republicans in my opinion, rarily think complex concepts out fully. It seems to be the norm these days, that if a Republican can be a racist, with a sliver of cover to hide behind, they will!

Concider the concept. For this concept, YOU, the reader, are a US Citizen, currently unemployed, and needing a job. Bob (not his real name), is a recent illegal immigrant, from Peru, who hopped across the border from Mexico. Dave, is a federal attorney for the NLRB. And Smith, the person whom is a unscruplous business man, trying to maximize net profits.

Smith, the business man, own a good size farm. He needs workers every season, to work those fields, so he can get produce to market, and make a profit. That is the reason for going through all this crap....to make a profit! And Smith wants to make a BIG profit. Now, he doesn't consider himself mean, evil, or even unAmerican. No, he is an American! Smith pays taxes, and donates to the local Republican Party, as they often vote and argue for things, that makes him more money (and less taxes....damn liberal commie, Marxist, rat-hole, hippie, stupid, lame, lazy, idiots!). So, Smith needs to hire, sixty (60) workers, for the season. Rather he figures, needs at least 60 workers a day for any given project to reach its end.

Example 1:

So, Smith decideds he needs to hire sixty (60) workers. If he hires you, he will have to pay $7.25, the Federal Minimeum wage, plus all the different taxes. (For the sake of this example, lets just say its $7). So, 60 x 7, is $420 and hour, plus 1.5 times that, for any overtime. Whether that overtime is over eight hours in a day, or fourty (40) in a week. Crops don't grow when, you, the worker, are working only. They grow and such, when your not. So, hiring you, will eventually count against him, and his net profit!

But Bob, will work for $3.00 an hour. He'll put up with alot of crap, because he needs the money. While he works for Smith; Smith will go to some distance to 'protect' him, from behing picked up by ICE and the police. Afterall, bob is helping him make a bigger bottom line. Smith justs work him to an early grave with 14-16 hour days, 6-7 days a week. Bob can't complain to the police, without reveiling himself a criminal in the process. So it is safe to say, hiring Bob, and 59 of his friends, saves Smith alot of money. Why, he would have to pay nearly three times to hire You, and your 59 co-workers. And that's not even considering all the crap Democrats have given workers over the years!

Bottom Line: Potential Risk is high, Potential Profit is high. Smith is only in trouble if the law catchs up to him, and proves he knew anything about Bob's status, or, how his health has been under employment. Likewise, if the Fed were to crack down on illegal immigrants, Smith would have to start hiring....*gasp*...US Citizens! Some of the money that he is 'saving' from having to pay US Citizens, can go towards hiring some 'foreman' at $4. You might call these guys 'thugs', 'enforcers', or 'criminals'. To Smith, they get the job done!

Example 2:

Use the same information from Example 1, with the following exceptions. Bob, is a God fearing man. Yes, he found a local church, and it became evident to the US Citizens there, that Bob is hardworking and devout Christian. But, he does keep to himself, and barely understands basic English. So it takes a while for people to realize, he's being worked in to an early graveyard by 'the evil farm owner'. They tell him, to go see Dave, of the NLRB. They even offer to give him a ride in to the city, and 'pay' a day of his 'salary'. It doesn't take Dave long to figure out, what Smith is doing. And sets to work. To make the long story short, Smith does get busted, fined, and jailed. Oh, he did try during that time, to get the local Republican Party to come help and defend himself. And they did, without really checking in to the story of lies he feed them. They railed against Dave, the NLRB, and even got their 'face time' on Fox News as an 'expert'. But in the end, they were made fools of, and looked even more like idiots for having believed some of his more wild material. Smith is a business man on a farm, not a writer of thriller books!

Bottom Line: Potential High Risk, No Pay-off (as he is jailed, and lose funds/property).

Example 3:

Anderson, another business man, have been observing, other business men getting nailed for hiring illiegal immigrants, and paying them crappy wages. They forced their workers in to horrible conditions, and used hired thugs, to beat those who questioned in to silence (of the temporary or permanent kind). Anderson decides, it is not worth hiring illegal immigrants, as the risk is not worth the trouble. While his potential profit will not be as high as he wants, he could end up getting some motivated US citizens. While, there is a chance, he could hire an illegal immigrant, they would be afforded the same pay and rights, as any of the other workers.

Bottom Line: Low to None Risk, Moderate Pay-off. The other two examples, the business owner reports to the state and IRS a 'normal' profit/loss based on area businesses and reports in the library. Yes, you can find ALOT of information in a library. In Example 3, Anderson reports the honest accounting of bills.

******

So, the point of the NRLB, to be in a position to help illegal immigrants get a fair wage, is not directly for their benefit (as Republicans foolishly think). But to aid US Citizens, who want work, but can't compete with the illegal immigrants. It forces businesses to reconsider their work and business ethic. That is, if they HAVE an ethic that is honest and honorable. But, by doing this, those businesses that are unethical and dishonorable, could flee and go else where. I say "Let 'em go else where, be someone else's problem". This is a wise way of using taxpayer funds that ultimately, protect US citizens. The federal minimual wage, is a totally different topic!

Something this "challenge" also does not address are all the other jobs being overrun by illegals. Take a look at any given construction site (assuming you can find one). Also take a look at the H1B1 Visa mess.

We tend to think of illegals as only being from Mexico and doing menial labor like produce picking, housekeeping, and landscaping. It's a much larger issue.

Oh sure and all those farmers are going to pass along the *savings* to the consumer, right?
Meat and processing plants of the like should be paying $30-$40 per hour plus benefits by now.
A few years ago up in Massachusetts they busted about 600 illegals from a plant in Fall River I believe. What the News didn't show was the lines of American Citizens applying for those jobs, I think there were about 800 of them, at much better wages of course the following week.
This is nothing but *GREED* on the part of these "business owners."
Watch that show "Dirty Jobs" Americans will do any job if, they can make a good living at it!

Vile is a bait barrel on a hot summer day and reaching into maggot infested fish part barrel and stringing it for 25 cents a string and 25 fishparts to a string.

After that job I swear I smelled like a sick whale. So cleaning literal crap is dangerous and potentially profitable and not out the question.

I've also had to get my face beat on by three different kickboxers. Females but damn they pack a mean punch. The last one felt like a brick to my head every time she punched me. 45 minutes worth of work equals 300 dollars.

And very gimped up rest days ahead. I'm not doing that again unless I get a mouthgaurd, gloves, head gear, and 2 redbulls, lots of gatoraid.

I have used my head to gain money and it hurts.

I really don't think they want to live here. I think they should be allowed to come here legally to take these jobs at normal wages if they want them and then they can go back to their country when all the fruits and vegetables are picked. That’s how they do it in Canada.

The real way to police it is to go after the employers but the laws are not for everybody in our countries.

I agree with you, go after the owners who employ them but the laws are not for everybody, mostly to help the rich.

(abbreviated ... no need to repeat)

LOL .. this is an upcoming Colbert Report .. on the Comedy Channel ... presenting this challenge.

The idea of the show is, there is not an American ...

who will pick fruits and veggies, on hands and knee's ... in the hot sun ... 16 - 18 hours a day ... exempted from minimum wage laws .. and without health care.

So America NEEDS ILLEGAL Immigrants ...

And trust me ... if you made America's unemployed do this ... the UAW would have them organized within two days.

A piece of fruit, or frozen veggies ... would cost $50 apiece!

Brain I'm with you...workers legally entering the country...employed at least at minimum wage with taxes paid AND money paid to social security which they will NOT be eligible to receive. If you do not include this money then there will still be an unfair advantage to hiring foreign workers over local.

It may seem unfair to pay SS when they cannot benefit but that is the only way it will not hurt local economies. If they don’t like this then they should look for work in their own countries and take advantage of their systems.

If the above were the case …enforced… with heavy penalties for hiring illegal’s then I believe there will be a marked increase in American employment and increase in taxes collected and a healthier economy. There will also be a drop in the demand for foreign workers and less problems on the border and better employment throughout the US.

I am thinking ... I agree ... you make some good points here ....

Problem I see ... is agricultural workers are exempt from minimum wage laws in the USA ... and ... unlike restaurant workers ... there are NO tips .... health care or anything ...

It is kind of a clusterfuck dilemma ... between the cost of food to the consumer ... and illegal immigration.

Being from the Northern USA ... close to the Canadian border ... I believe the reasoning ... about illegal immigration ...is more DISRUPTIVE to our local economy ... than supportive.

After all we are worried about importing ... hockey players!

As I've posted above there will always be a need for migrate workers.. it is just the nature of farming. I am willing to pay a slight increase in food to assure a decent living for migrate workers. I also think it would benefit our economy in the long run for the reasons I've stated previously.

That could be solved in 1 year. Let them go one year without the use of illegal workers and with American workers refusing to do the job for substandard wages. They will ante up or lose their crops.

It is kind of a clusterfuck dilemma ... between the cost of food to the consumer ... and illegal immigration.

I think in the long run illegal aliens are costing us more. But I could be wrong.

It may be. I really don't know if it will help or hurt us; but we should at least try something. (boy does that sound desperate or what!)

While I personally agree with you ...

There are many here ... who don't.

I could point out the unemployment thread .. for instance ..

Suffice to say ... you and I agree ... on this one.
