Yes, lets ask the Christians about The Muslims about The Jews about the Hindus.... about narrow-mindedness.

WHat a dumbass thread.

sigh, I guess this is a dumb assed thread to you.

I am glad I am on a much higher road than to run around and make the same comment about all the
wonderful and enlightening threads that you enjoy participating in.

Peace and Blessings!

Why are so many non-Believers/agnostics/and or whatever you want to call yourselves so narrow minded?

Maybe just maybe what you perceive as narrow mindedness is people responding to your talking about something they have no interest in. I certainly am bored beyond words by people preaching to me. It really doesn't make much difference if it is a conserevative evangelical or some "new age" crystal enthuisiast. I'll try to be polite to the ones not trying to force their beliefs on me and society as a whole but that doesn't mean I want to hear anything about them.

You see from my point of view the kindest thing that can be said about religions/spirtual movements/ faiths is that they sometimes produce great art. But the details of all of them strikes me as patently absurd in the extreme. Whether its worshipping a guy who rose from the dead on the 3rd day on a Sunday after dying on a Friday (wait a sec, 3 days?) or some tale of Xenu and volcanoes or whatever doesn't matter. So if you don't want me to feel the need to point out the absurdities of your beliefs, don't talk to me about your beliefs.

This happens to be the Politics and Religion section, down here.
I have seen dead horse topics and chats,  beaten beyond recognition
I rarely participate in any of the Religion based threads down here.

I do agree with what you, and many other people have stated in that: Both Believers and Non-Believers are often narrow minded.
I have noticed that the non-Believers on this website tend to be a lot more outspoken about what they think, which is just fine with me.

Every blue moon, I enjoy starting a thread from a Believer's point of view.
In the end, I totally agree that both sides have many people that are narrow minded.

What a marvelous thread this is!
I am so glad I started it.

Ok then. lets talk about how Protestants love the Catholics?

The premise of the thread is flawed

Louve00 -> RE: Why are so many non-Believers so narrow minded? (6/28/2010 6:23:05 AM)

To be honest Marini, I'm not sure what I believe.  lol I know that sounds rediculous, but its why I don't much involve myself in these religious/spiritual threads.  I was raised a catholic and am completely against the way they try to invoke fear and reverance into their people/believers (my mother being one of those fearful believers).  But I have been in and through enough situations to 'feel' a greater presence was over the situation in some way (although to ask me what those situations were, I hesitate to tell you because to me they were real and to others they'd most likely be bunk or explain it away some other way, so why bother?)  If you've ever listened to a motivational speaker named Wayne Dyer, then you know of the internal spirit he speaks of in all of us.  He doesn't pray to a God, as much as he turns inwardly to his personal energy to strengthen and rely on himself.  I sort of like that notion.  And it makes the most sense to me because the mind can make you believe and think of and accomplish things you couldn't do without belief in yourself.  Anyway...when I definitively make up my mind as to what spiritual powers guide me, I'll let everyone know.  [:)]

i just read the OP and none of the responses yet, so be nice if i am repeating.

Are non-believers narrow minded, or is it some believers that deem them so? Are they called narrow minded because they cannot be swayed to believe in God or even to consider the possibility of His existence?

If so, i do not see that as narrow-mindedness, but rather confidence in what they feel.

I just wanted to point out that all Believers and Christians do not think the same, share the same beliefs, or even like large numbers of other "Christians" or "Believers".

I just have never seen this viewpoint, fully stated.

And your subject line doesnt state that either, so if you didn't mean to be antagonistic it could have said "Not all Believers think the same".

marie2 -> RE: Why are so many non-Believers so narrow minded? (6/28/2010 7:12:49 AM)

For the same various reasons that some "believers" are narrow-minded.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer.

Just wave your hands towards the sky, if the spirit leads you.

Right here is part of the problem....Why don't people wave their hands to the ground? Why is it assumed that God is floating around somewhere out in space? It's partly a trained response and it is also very limiting in our perception of God as we should be waving towards our own brains in as that is where we have created our God and our definitions of our version of spirituality.

If you look over there you can se

What a wonderfully written and well thought out post.

I just don't see enough written about Spirituality, having Fatih in a Supreme Being, and being free to walk your own path, and find your own way.

Thank you Zevar, for stating your points of views, so much more eloquently
than I ever could have.

Perhaps you have not looked into it deeply enough?

I know spiritual Atheists, dogmatic and spiritually devoid "Christians", and I think your OP was kinda insulting to those with no belief....

I am cutting and pasting a wikipedia entry on "spirituality" to show you what a mixed bag it is, and it has very little to do with "belief". It also may show you how you are perhaps the one that is not being "open" in your definitions. I would also not judge people by what you find on internet forums, most people are not as zealous as what you will find contributing to a topic... people post on topics like this out of their convictions that they are correct...

I can imagine it is hard for people who think they are "battling" because they feel like they are a minority. I know it has been hard for me to find a mate as an agnostic, because everyone has a path they want to "defend"... but hey, everyone is entitled to believe as they will... isn't the Constitution wonderful? It protects believers and nonbelievers alike.

Spirituality can refer to an ultimate or immaterial reality;[1] an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the “deepest values and meanings by which people live.”[2] Spiritual practices, including meditation, prayer and contemplation, are intended to develop an individual's inner life; such practices often lead to an experience of connectedness with a larger reality, yielding a more comprehensive self; with other individuals or the human community; with nature or the cosmos; or with the divine realm.[3] Spirituality is often experienced as a source of inspiration or orientation in life.[4] It can encompass belief in immaterial realities or experiences of the immanent or transcendent nature of the world.

Isn't there something in the Bible about how you shouldn't do that? False idols and the like: Moses was very down on that stuff, iirc.

Chick, those that "truly" believe would be more than happy to tell you that you are not getting into the club. Your weak ass beliefs do not begin to qualify for a shot at the after life.

Your Goddess doesn't even begin to wipe the ass of Christ. Your Goddess is dumb.

My lord and savior, Susieswallows13, created everything and everything that she created is a part of everything that she created. We are all connected. what flows through you, (minus the hate, the anger towards men and your poor thread starting abilities) flows through me and everyone and everything else.

How cool is that s

We absolutely cannot let this get out.  Just imagine what might happen.  Whole polytheistic pantheons even!

Well, golden idols will come in quite handy after the Christian apocalypse.[8D]

Probably because the numbers of spirit based versus dogma based churches is so small that we haven't met any and therefore assume there aren't any. Whereas we've all had the pleasure of being harangued by a dogma type.

The good friend I thought I had in high school who turned to me one day and said she was very sorry I was Jewish since it meant I was bound to burn in hell despite being a nice person is an example. Another are the Jehovah's Witnesses who won't take a no thank you, ignore no trespassing signs and try to force their way into the house to keep talking at you. My daughter finally told this winner she was going to release the dog if he didn't leave immediately.

Coming to the door naked can get rid of those lads, I've heard.
"Did we catch you at a bad time?"
"No, you caught me at a good time. I was having sex."
"Oh, you're married?"
"Of course not! I wouldn't marry a sheep."
"We'll just be going, now. Sorry."

Ever hear of Unitarian Universalists?

I went to their church a few times... I found it odd. I liked that anyone was welcomed no matter what they believe. Atheists, agnostics, and gnostics... all under the same roof. I loved their political stances, which was why I was attracted to attend their services in the first place, but what I found were a bunch of people who engaged in rituals, such as moments of silence, singing hymns, listening to sermons, etc etc etc... but no real religion. I thought it was cool, but what it really made me think of was that many people enjoy congregating and ritualizing that because of their cultural upbringing. It was seriously like going to a Christian Church without the Christianity... very disconcerting and uncomfortable for me as someone whose parents didn't believe in going to church
