Michael Jackson, Was friends with and inspired by Marcel Marceau, Now depending on how you feel that could be a point either direction.

I think Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are close but in the end Michael was a better dancer and a better showman.

QSM

Weird how you immediately linked him to Marcel. Michael made Marcel one of the most immortal unknown celebrities. For those who don't knnow Marcel Marceau, he was the mime player that "invented" the moonwalk.

<--------- Is a HUGE fan of Marcel Marceau, I usually hate Mimes but this guy was good, and yes his Reverse Show in which he does everything Backwards is where the "Moonwalk" came from actually he did it so much better than Michael but again that is a matter of opinion.

Why is it weird I did that? Just curious.... who is that Weird.

Well, if you ask people about MJ, usually they don't respond: "Oh yeah, the guy who was friends with Marcel Marceau". But yeah, if you're a Marceau fan it might not be weird to immediately make that association.

I've seen Marcel's moonwalk and I gotta admit that both men managed to make me believe they were walking backwards (not considering the first time Michael moonwalked at Motown 25 since he didn't master it then), so I think it's hard to say one did it better than the other. I was impressed though once I saw Michael go from a "in place" moonwalk to a backwards one to a sidewards one in one big fluent motion. Oh well, bias bias bias

Don't get me wrong in a dance contest Michael would OBLITERATE Marcel, But when it came to the fines of it all Marcel took the gold.

Imagine a break down of an entire day from Bed to Bed Night to Day, not being able to Talk to explain it and him telling the story Backwards. From getting out of bed at night to the Bar to work to lunch to catching the morning train, to the bed in the morning. All things done backwards and EVERYONE GETTING WHAT WAS GOING ON..... Fucking Amazing.

Michael could dance and do things that few man can do, he managed to combine Hip Hop, Mime, Ballet, and Pop and Lock in to one fluid motion and that is just amazing.

I gotta say when it comes down to who I respect more as a Person it's Michael all the way, Elvis died in such a way that when the story of his life was finally told for what it really was I had lost all respect for the man, starting with just about every single one of his Most Known Songs were stolen from Black Singers who never saw a fraction of what Elvis got when his Manager Stole them and gave them to him to sing. As a Young man he might not have fully known, but once he had himself made and was still making money off the songs he never went back and made it right.

Just some History.

I am not a fan of either. I do find it fascinating that people are lauding everything about Michael since his death. Before that he was just Wacko Jacko and reviled by most people.
As performers they both served to elevate their craft and expose people to music they might not have otherwise heard. THAT is genius no matter who wrote the songs.

For me, it is an easy one...I grew up listening to Elvis, was in fact born the year before he began to soar.  As for Michael, I liked some of what he did musically and disliked a lot of what he did musically.  As someone noted, they were both geniuses in their interpretations of music but for me, Elvis would always come before Michael.

He's in Silent Movie. (Gets the only spoken dialogue in that one, if memory serves.)

Elvis all the way. Jackson hadn't recorded anything worth a shit since Thriller came out. Okay, neither did Presley, but he'd been dead for five years by then, so he had a much better excuse.
He had a much better voice and never squeaked on a record as well. Good as it is, Billie Jean ain't no Suspicious Minds or Heartbreak Hotel...

It was MJ for Me.  I think that has a lot to do with My age.  Elvis was great in his prime, but that was a bit before My time.  I grew up with Michael Jackson being in his.  Whether it was intelligence or blind luck (most of the accounts attribute it to smart business) that he capitalized on the music video explosion catapulted him to a place where no one else could reach.  He used the best directors, producers, and technology at the time so that nobody else was even in the same league.  Combine that with the actual timing of "Thriller" and the result was a sensation that couldn't be rivaled.

Did y'all see what Jackson's stuff went for at the auction? Major bucks, nearly 200 grand for the glove alone.

I'd pick Jackson, I like his music just a hair better than Elvis', but his creepy bedroom habits...

See, I always considered Michael the better vocalist, Elvis basically had a deep voice while Michael had a unique one. That's why I think there are so many Elvis impersonators singing live, because it's not that hard as a high pitched voice that has to scream through some parts of songs (or as you call it squaek).

But what lacks more in Elvis songs is meaning I think. Just listened again to Earth Song, and it's amazing how 10 years ago someone was already asking why whales are being killed (still going on), the Israel war (dito) and ravaging the seas (no comment needed at the present) amongst many things. Of course you're no Nostradamus predicting that in ten years mankind will still be cruel to itself and nature.

But, Man in the Mirror, for example made me really think, and ever since I had a moment of reflection myself I decided that every year I would spend some money I earned on side jobs as a student will be spent to some charity. Usually it's the Cancer funding or for national poverty in Belgium. It might not be that much, but he managed to make me thinka bout my own situation and that there are indeed so many others less fortunate and a song about heartbreak could never have done that I think.

I just finished watching a BET tribute to MJ....
http://concreteloop.com/2010/06/video-chris-browns-emotional-tribute-to-michael-jackson

Definitely MJ all the way!  He was definitely Wacko Jacko but undisputedly (for me) the best entertainer to date.

Speaking of the Moonwalk, some guy on a Soul Train one hour TV special said he taught MJ how to Moonwalk. I bet many people take credit for something that MJ did.
