You know I looked the other day for a rule on it because it's been discussed often lately and recently asked that question. I'm told by VAA (the site's administrator) that if a thread is older than 3 months it's best to start a new one and reference the old one. I think the reason is because people end up responding to people that no longer post here on old threads.

Also, it's really kind of weird when a thread gets resurrected, and the person who started it is dead.

Another forum (non BDSM related) I'm a member of recently lost a couple of members within a few months of one another, and it's weird/disconcerting enough seeing their posts still in active threads, let alone having an old post that they started suddenly come back to life.

Yay! Jeffff's thread has delurked some folks! [:)] Welcome to the boards, Ligeia! On the old thread thing, Laurell is correct. It is best to start a new thread and reference the old one. That said, it also depends on the nature of the thread. If the OP was a general question, like "What does everyone think of (insert activity here)", a slight necro probably won't get slammed. If the OP is along the lines of "Help! How do I deal with (insert current situation here)", people may get pissy if they take the time to respond to the OP and then realize that the post is months/ years old and either the situation is long resolved or the OP is no longer on the boards.

How many times there's griping that someone should have run a search for a topic, instead of starting a new thread, as if it's not alright to bring it up anew. Then when an old thread is resurrected, to discuss the topic, there's complaining about that, too. It's like...an open invitation to shut up and keep lurking!
