Good for you! I'm very glad you delurked!!

I wouldn't worry about sticking your foot in your mouth, if you do, there's many here that are doing it on a much larger scale that will shine in that spotlight. [;)]

*lol* Thanks [:D]

Quick question, what's the general rule of thumb with reviving old threads vs starting new ones - is there any sort of 'threads less than a year old are ok to revive' type guideline, or similar. Or is it just basically up to a person's common sense?. I've just noticed a few old threads being resurrected recently, and people questioning it, wondered what the protocol was. [:)]

You know I looked the other day for a rule on it because it's been discussed often lately and recently asked that question. I'm told by VAA (the site's administrator) that if a thread is older than 3 months it's best to start a new one and reference the old one. I think the reason is because people end up responding to people that no longer post here on old threads.

Cool, thanks. I'll keep that in mind when I'm searching for topics. [:)]

Also, it's really kind of weird when a thread gets resurrected, and the person who started it is dead.

Oh yeah, definitely, I understand that. Another forum (non BDSM related) I'm a member of recently lost a couple of members within a few months of one another, and it's weird/disconcerting enough seeing their posts still in active threads, let alone having an old post that they started suddenly come back to life.

Same here, although it depends on the situation. Some situations I'll become very chatty in very quickly (it's a cover for nervousness, basically), others I'll tend to hang back and not say much for fear of judgement, making a fool of myself, upsetting people, sticking my foot in my mouth, and so on. I have an anxiety disorder, so that doesn't help either. I don't mind being called a lurker though, that is what I've been doing, for several months as a guest now actually. I don't know if I would have delurked if I hadn't been given a safe space in which to do so. [:)]

If I'm comfortable and around familiar people in a situation, then I can be chatty and teasing and do ok, but in an unfamiliar situation, on my own, I tend to be quiet and listen and observe unless drawn out by someone.

WyldHrt -> RE: An open invite to all you lurkers! (6/29/2010 10:44:14 PM)

Yay! Jeffff's thread has delurked some folks! [:)]

Welcome to the boards, Ligeia! On the old thread thing, Laurell is correct. It is best to start a new thread and reference the old one.
That said, it also depends on the nature of the thread. If the OP was a general question, like "What does everyone think of (insert activity here)", a slight necro probably won't get slammed. If the OP is along the lines of "Help! How do I deal with (insert current situation here)", people may get pissy if they take the time to respond to the OP and then realize that the post is months/ years old and either the situation is long resolved or the OP is no longer on the boards.

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice. [:)]

Maybe you shouldn't be calling them "lurkers" but should stating that you realize that they are shy and maybe frightened to say anything.

sighs............................................let's just try NOT to find something wrong with and taint the positive fun thread for a day shall we?

Yes, Ma'am.  I agree.  kiss-kiss  I'm starting to fall in love with you, just try and remember that I'm a silly baby and I like to make silly jokes that make me laugh, but I forget that not everyone gets my silly sense of humor! I still want to see your panties!

WTF ARE THEY SCARED OF?????

Umm... well, DarkSteven, since you asked, people who actually understand what happens on dry land are scary... it's confusing enough without adding in internet forums, bdsm and confident folk who seem to actually know how it all works.

Lurking's safe and means that I can just google the bits that I don't understand - I don't have to derail a thread by asking basic questions like, "Is a kitchen anything like a galley?" and, "What's the number for the fire brigade?" Okay, I might be exaggerating slightly, but it's still basically true.

That reasoning probably doesn't apply to all lurkers, though...

MOMistress -> RE: An open invite to all you lurkers! (6/29/2010 11:36:38 PM)

I am most definitely one of the lurkers. I come to the forum pretty much every day but rarely post. I don't have a shy bone in my body. I'm just trying to feel folks out. This is not the same as trying to feel folks up. [:D]

oneserene -> RE: An open invite to all you lurkers! (6/29/2010 11:39:36 PM)

Greetings Jeffff, It' wonderful that you are trying to make a difference with this post. Thank you for the encouragement.

If you get the Official Answer to that great question, it needs to be made a sticky post. How many times there's griping that someone should have run a search for a topic, instead of starting a new thread, as if it's not alright to bring it up anew. Then when an old thread is resurrected, to discuss the topic, there's complaining about that, too.

It's like...an open invitation to shut up and keep lurking!

Yeah I have to admit that did throw me for a bit of a loop as well. The idea of 'use the search function before starting a topic' but don't revive an old thread just seemed a bit 'Huh, what?' to me, which is why I thought I'd better ask about it. [:)]

Not official or anything, but laurell and I both answered that question.
Just sayin'

My answer came directely from VAA when I asked, I'm not sure it can get more official than that.
