I understand this....

There are rules in the senate, they could change those rules down the line in order to prevent the filibuster. Voting for cloture means that the measure goes to the floor for an up or down vote. It is a procedural rule to prevent filibuster. It requires 60 votes. The democrats no longer have them.... therefore they cannot do that procedure...

Good, now you can apply that to 2009 and realize there were no filibusters. Now lets address the real issue, the value of the filibuster. Just as there are checks and balances in the organization of the branches of government, there need to be checks and balances within the Senate.

Without filibusters then there is extreme risk of a simple majority refusing to compromise, even when it is in the best interests of the people. If a bill or nomination is carefully considered then there will be no chance for a filibuster, because it would be impossible to gather sufficient votes in the minority party.

It is exactly the opposite of what you portray it to be...it encourages bi-partisan dealings, it doesnt inhibit them.

Just because a couple of conservative democrats were enlisted by the GOP does not mean there were no filibusters... that is ridiculous!

As to the rest of this... I would agree that the filibuster was intended to be a check on the majority.. but it was not intended for this abuse. This is tantamount to ignoring the will of the American people. We elected these people to represent us, and abusing this mechanism that should only be used sparingly is going to make the case that is needs to dispear altogether

Oddly there seems to have been 39 cloture votes in 2009. Here's one:

No... you do not understand his argument.. if one person calling themselves a "democrat" or someone who claims to caucus with democrats (IE Ole Joe Lieberman) joins the filibuster then it doesn't count....

They were wrong about McCarthy, so no education there.

You claimed he didnt persecute anyone, Moonhead gaves you names. I would have done the same but couldnt stop laughing at your post.

As far as them seeming identical to you, you apparently have trouble with English, not me. A simple example should suffice. If Chomsky has x far left positions and x centrist positions, and Obama has exactly the opposite positions, then Obama is every bit as far left, yet not one position is identical.

Did you graduate middle school?

I did better than you by the look of it. If they dont agree on every point then they are not, by definition, every bit as far left. To use YOUR own example, one takes a more centrist view.

We obviously have different defintions of "persecution".

And your simply wrong on the second point, but logic has never been your strong point.

Oh. I did read that. It didnt deserve comment when it includes a statement that he is "proud to be an American". When you spend the first year and a half of your administration apologizing for America and denying American exceptionalism, there is no evidence of that. And of course both of those actions fit perfectly well with Chomsky.

Moonhead -> RE: "Its in my handwriting" Kagan says (7/2/2010 5:11:50 AM)

Not really. If he had any sense of shame he wouldn't spend so much time ignoring any responses to his daft statements that he can't explain away or dodge around with some bullshit excuse, would he?
(Love the new avatar, btw.)
