sirsholly -> Banning food dyes?? (7/1/2010 6:38:52 AM)

The Center for Science in the Public Interest  http://cspinet.org/new/201006291.html (CSPI) says food dyes pose a number of risks to the American public and is calling on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban three of the most commonly used dyes: Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6.  A new CSPI report says those dyes contain known carcinogens and contaminants that unnecessarily increase the risks of cancer, hyperactivity in children and allergic reactions. "These synthetic chemicals do absolutely nothing to improve the nutritional quality or safety of foods, but trigger behavior problems in children and, possibly, cancer in anybody

I have mentioned in the past that my son was misdiagnosed as Autistic because of his allergy to these dyes...mainly Red Dye #40.
We were very lucky to have a doctor who suggested elimination of these dyes, otherwise our three year old would have been one of  the many kids who are misdiagnosed and possibly end up as learning disabled because of these additives. This has to stop.

Red Dye #40 is not obvious. It is in white cake frosting, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, instant mashed potatoes, ice tea mixes and many other things you would never suspect. It is rampantly served throughout the school systems and in restaurants. Parents can read labels in the grocery stores, but we run the risk of poisoning our precious kids by eating in a restaurant. This has to stop.

Thanks!

..there are a few tricks in the food trade.

Something like "natural flavorings" can mean 1800 various items.

It's a disgusting practice....People turn a blind eye to this sort of thing. They act as if we are a proactive group of people as we stand in line to get our food from McDonalds.

Everyone should be aware of what they consume. Everyone should watch "Food, Inc." Nominated for best documentary...lost to "The Cove."

Thats the problem and why this stuff is so dangerous. It is not obvious, so if you do not have a label to read you can have no idea it is used.

At least we need to get this stuff out of our kids school lunches.

heartcream -> RE: Banning food dyes?? (7/1/2010 7:18:26 AM)

I am really sorry about your son. That is so disgusting to have your child get ill because of the food they sell to us. I am irrate about the crap they put in our food. It is a nasty ridiculous and stupid agenda.

I loathe corporate food, as hard as it is to stay away from because it is e v e r y w h e r e!

It would be nice if we could get real and loving legislation forbidding the use of these useless and harmful, damaging and destructive crappy shit they put in and on our food. Jeeezus you caint even buy fruit and vegetables these days without them mutating and hurting them with GMO's and all the chemicals and utter crap they douse it in.

...Her son tho- it may or may not be the die.  there are many possible factors.

I do think processed foods pose some harm- especially when they are the main diet.

Yes hunky I agree with the third sentence. Please dont make crap food your main diet fo sho.

StoicSadist -> RE: Banning food dyes?? (7/1/2010 8:24:52 AM)

Really the only way to avoid this stuff is to base your diet not on processed foods in the middle of the grocery, but the whole foods around the outside....No, they are no where near as convenient as the packaged foods in the middle, but they are better for you in the long run....Yes, they are more expensive, but health is worth it, most of the time.....I'm trying to get a garden going in my yard to reduce the cost of my produce, but that's hard work....but I'm hoping for some pay off.....

You don't know the half of it!  Well, YOU probably do.  But as part of so called Best Management Practices (BMP) they take the waste from CAFOs which is polluted with antibiotics and hormones and rife with E. coli and salmonella and spray that on crops as fertilizer.  Hence the recent outbreaks of E. coli and salmonella traced back to spinach and other non meat food items.  It is believed that the disease managed to work its way into the root system and the actual spinach in the E. coli spinach case.  So washing your food didn't matter.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Banning food dyes?? (7/1/2010 9:46:21 AM)

Allergies to the dyes can be incredible. Back in the 80's I saw a docco on the effects, and the diet that parents were promoting that avoided the additives. This kid was LITERALLY climbing the walls, bouncing around like a circus act. Removing the additives from his diet changed his behaviour completely.

but school lunches and restaurants serve it all the time. It is not a matter of label reading.

Thanks Heart...he is fine now...totally normal and healthy as long as we monitor his diet closely.

But there are other kids out there whose parents do not have the fantastic doctor we did...and they are simply accepting a diagnosis that their child has a disability. And it is also ADD/ADHD as well as Autism that is misdiagnosed.

Did you see Super Size Me?  They had in the special features where they put some McD's french fries under a dome and let them sit and there was never any change, while the real french fries began to decay and rot, it was wierd.  So, I'm not surprised.

Hib...if this had occurred today, his parents may have taken him to a doctor and had a diagnosis of ADHD, or any of the Autism Spectrum disorders. Sadly, they might have simply accepted the diagnosis and not made dietary changes. The child would have missed the basics in elementary school or placed in a special needs class and needlessly carried a stigma for the rest of his life.
All because of these dyes!!!

This was back when ADHD was a NEW diagnosis, and parents were (justifiably) anti-Ritalin and other pharma solutions. I think that autism and ADHD are real diagnoses for lots of folks..... but I have to question that SO MANY kids have it. Do they have it worldwide, or just in the west?
