Mine was reference to "Separation of church and state".  Yours is a reference that Jefferson was sometimes a decent guy.

A man that enjoyed the holiday with family and friends, both in the WH and at Monticello. So, again, i have to ask why would he be sick over this? I have pointed out that he stated once he could never be an atheist. So im curious as to why.

I honestly don't care for your rhetorical style. You only ever seem to ask loaded questions and are obviously lying in wait at the crossroads with your big "Gotcha" sign.  Its childish and uninteresting.  I will generally not be responding to this sort of thing again.  Thanks.

Wow. Didnt realize i scared you so much. I dont do "gotcha". I do ask questions when things dont seem to match up. But, of course, you cant seem to answer this particular question.

Jefferson was not an atheist, he was a deist.

He stated he could never be an atheist. I have posted that before, but didnt know if you had seen that.

I asked, because everyone screams that he wanted seperation of church and state. And the man may have had a crystal ball because the state of our churches is something i definitely dont want meddling in our government and visa versa.

I asked because from what little i do know about the man, this idea that a government approved holiday making him sick doesnt match.

What's the big deal?  We are largely a Christian nation by numbers.  So accept that.

As they say, when in Rome...

What's the big deal indeed? America is indeed an overwhelmingly Christian nation...75%+ Christian. And of all the world's religions Christrianity is the most accepting and tolerant of other religions. Accept it or leave.

Indeed, as they say..."When in Rome, do as the Romans."

Has anyone noticed that Christian Holidays are recognized by school districts and the government, Muslim holidays are not?

quote:

“One in every eight school kids in the City of New York observes the Muslim faith,” New York City Comptroller John Liu said in a statement issued yesterday by the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays. “Yet these students are forced to choose between their education and their faith, and it’s a situation that needs to be rectified.” In addition all the presidents of New York’s five boroughs have sent letters of support to our coalition, while Public Advocate Bill de Blasio support the City Council resolution recognizing Muslim holidays. “About 12 percent of New York City students are Muslim,” says de Blasio, “and consequently thousands of students miss exams and important activities because they are scheduled on Muslim holidays. The Department of Education should treat these students equally and include the two main Islamic holidays in the school calendar, just as it does with other major religions.” It was a beautiful thing to stand amongst a diverse group of people yesterday in support of a cause that really goes beyond a holiday. I’m looking forward to the day that it’s celebration—not contention—that brings us together. Who knows? Maybe it’ll even be on Eid.

http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2010/07/01/my-take-new-yorks-schools-should-observe-muslim-holidays/

Recently the New York City Council voted for the schools to recognize Muslim holidays, and yet Mayor Bloomberg decided against it.

The same is true for Jewish Holidays, I know of no school district in America where Jewish holidays are recognized.

The question, If the holidays of one religion is recognized by schools and government should not all religious holidays be recognized?

If this is the biggest problem that we had in the world then we'd be very good indeed.

Has anyone looked at this from a view of no religion at all?  What if we didn't have Spring Break or Winter Break at all?  Wouldn't that solve a lot of the issues?  Have school go year round, maybe?  Get off for the Fourth of July, September 11th, President's Day and all that?  That way, no religion would be given preferential treatment.  Teachers get paid year-round anyways.  No one gets offended by religion overtones and the education system might even benefit from it.

Just a thought.  ^_^

The teachers get let out for the holidays as well as the kids, you know. Would they be happy about suddenly having their hours ramped up like that?

Who cares?  I mean, if we want to keep from offending everyone, teachers and students alike have to make sacrifices.  Right?

You'd be happy working every day that isn't a bank holiday or a weekend and taking shitloads of work home yourself every weekend, then?

They no longer call them Christmas, Easter, ect. Infact in the county that I live in they observe alot of jewish holidays ontop of the regularly observed federal holidays. Although these holidays don't fall into my personal religious believes or that of my children, the releality is that legally a parent can keep their child out of school for any religious holiday. They don't have to be observed by the school, county, state, ect. A parent is only required to notify the school.

I know it might have been evident, but I was being completely and totally sarcastic.

My father is a teacher, though, and he does bring home shitloads of work on the weekdays and weekends.  He has a 95% + on all of the standardized state tests.  His first year teaching, in an inner-city school, he had a 98% passing rate and brought the school's testing percentage up to 85% from below 70%.  He busts his ass every day during the school year, and I think they're entitled to a break every once-in-a-while.

Christians are the people who bitch the most when something doesn't go their way.  That's why everyone goes with their traditions.  No one is born thinking that they'll be getting gifts on some day in December just for the hell of it.

When another religion bitches more and louder than Christians, than they will get what they want.

Guess you missed all the posts about how school systems around the country give time off for most if not all religious holidays.

There are two issues I'd like to address.

First of all, there's Jefferson's public/political stances, and "what he did in the privacy of his home as a private citizen", Tazzy. You certainly can recognize the difference between the two...

Second of all... schools allow excused absences for many non-Xian religious observations. The difference is, Xian kids don't miss instructional time when they take off for ~their~ holidays. Kids of other religious traditions do, and often that is difficult if not ~impossible~ to make up/replace.

Of course i can recognize the difference. During the time of Jefferson, many did not celebrate at all. The fact that the man celebrated not only in the White House, but his own home, exchanged gifts, which was not widely done then either, gave slaves the day off... does not speak to me of a man who would be "sick" with the thought of a nation celebrating a holiday. Everyone screams seperation of church and state... which i agree with to a point. The "wall" as i have seen is a bit different than what others tend to believe.

I do agree completely with Renquist on this matter.

“The metaphor of a wall of separation is bad history and worse law. It has made a positive chaos out of court rulings. It should be explicitly abandoned.”

A few of our founding fathers believed the same.

And it was Jefferson who said...

"When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself as public property."

But thats for another thread.

this is true in the district where we live. It is not an "absent" day for the child as long as the parents notify the school.
