How did you EVER guess!  You must be psychic!  I probably said he when referring to him, I suppose, I'm not gonna look, I"m just gonna assume your brilliance!  I put one of those rolls back, but now, I think I'm going to put the other roll back in also.

When I go to Colorado I drink almost no alcohol and eat sparingly. I make sure I drink A LOT of water and cut way back on the caffiene (it dehydrates) I usually try to relax my first day there. We always do a lot of physical stuff, hiking, riding, I even ran a bit this last time. I've never had altitude sickness, just a bit of breathlessness on occasion. Generic Dude struggled this last time but that might have had something to do with various alcoholic beverages and lack of sleep.

And yes, sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen. I slather it on all over when I get up in the morning. And make sure to wear a brimmed hat. Cannot drink too much water or wear enough layers. I was just there two weeks ago and saw it go from 90 degrees mid day to a snow storm a few days later.

I adore Colorado. You will be near The Great Sand Dunes (not far from where my brother and mother live) and Zapata Falls kinda cool to see also. We hiked all over that area about 18 years ago. My favourite places are further north in Chaffee County.

I will take heed of all of your advice except for the drinking part, though I won't be drinking every day while there, we will be dining at the Dog Bar on our first  and last night.  I don't want to be a pussy.   I am drinking lots of water right now, though.  AND I"m NOT smoking!  Doing very well with that.  I've been working out a whole lot and getting in shape and working with my dr. on making sure I'm up to par for the trip.  3 days left!  WOO HOO!!!!!  The only caffeine I've had in some time has been from green tea, though I had some coffee this morning, it's not something I do so much anymore, probably cause I'm not smoking, though. WOW!  And I didn't even think about a cigarette when I was having the coffee, can you believe that shit?  I just realized that!  I'm AWESOME!

Hi Darling Savage,

I just now saw this thread.

I'm from CO and have been hiking/camping many times. As others have said, drink a ton of water... (your pee should be clear). If your hands and fingers start to swell, you are dehydrated. Drink. It takes two weeks to acclimate... you must form more red blood cells before you are truly acclimated. One day doesn't do it. But that's okay, just take it slow. You'll be two miles high during the hike. It will likely be very dry. Bring chapstick, and as others have said, sunscreen. I would strongly advise against drinking alcohol until you're done with the hike.

It's good you'll be with other non-Coloradoans, so your guides won't push you too hard. Your guides know what to do about bears... don't concern yourself.

Do not be surprised if you are easily out of breath. It doesn't mean you're out of shape, just that there's way less O2 in the air.

As far as camping.. as weird as it sounds, and you won't want to do it, but you will be glad you did: change into a fresh pair of underwear for nighttime... you'll be warmer (the stuff you wore all day is sweaty and a little damp). Sleep with a woolen hat. Put on fresh socks for nighttime.

Have a good time! I love it here!

Someone else said a day and a half to 2 days.  I guess it depends on the person, but I see what you're saying.  I've got some blood builder vitamins left over from when I had surgery.  I'll go check and make sure they're still good and take those or buy some more.  I need to get a little bottle of lotion and I think I've got some blistex around somewhere.  And I do have sunscreen, though, I must confess, I don't really burn.  I tan within milliseconds of being in the sun, though.

thornhappy -> RE: Colorado! (7/7/2010 6:12:46 PM)

A good sunscreen lip balm will be very useful; you catch more UV up there than at sea level.

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Colorado! (7/7/2010 6:41:10 PM)

If you haven't already, be sure to tell your doctor. He may want to send you with more than just a rescue inhaler.

Other than that, have fun and remember to take pity on those of us that have to live vicariously throughothers....meaning, TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES!

I do too, and I live in Florida, but when I go to the mountains, I often get a slight burn on my upper lip, my ears, and my nose. The UV is just worse there. Be sure to throw in some mosquito repellent too.

Goin to the mountaintop on the 11th!  Goin' up Mt. Blanca, 10,000 to 12,000 ft.  Never been to CO or been that high in the air without being in an airplane.  I'll be walking up the side of the mountain with a backpack on my back.  I've been working out every day and just curious about any tips acclimating to the elevation and stuff.  I can't wait!  I'm VERY excited!  I've been looking forward to this all summer!
Be sure not to fall off the big mountain thingy.

I have been talking to my doctor regularly in getting prepared for this trip!  And I intend to take lot of pictures. You know what a picture person I am!  And I will post them here when I get back!  YAY!

I'll try not to, but I can't make any guarantees.  I'm kind of a klutz.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 11:01:22 AM)

Great news!  I went to the Dr. yesterday and my blood oxygen saturation was up to 98%!  I was down to 76% when I first started going to the Dr.  So that is how much I have improved!  I was SICK!  But I sure am better now!

jnny -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 11:11:15 AM)

i've spent alot of time in colorado. i love cruzing out west of denver and on into utah. i never noticed that it made me feel any different. i smoke about a pack a day and i never got short of breath. never once had the o2 level in my blood checked tho

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 11:15:01 AM)

Well, I couldn't breathe, so I was going to the Dr. quite a bit.  I had a bronchial infection and asthma and a sinus infection and bronchitis.  I was in pretty bad shape.  All from smoking.  So, lucky you, I wouldn't quit if I didn't have to.  Part of the reason for this trip was I knew I would have to quit in order to go.  So, it was an incentive.  Anyway, that's why they were measuring my O2 saturation cause I couldn't breathe.

Cruising is far different than actual physical exertion.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 11:35:00 AM)

That's true, too!  LOL!

splorff -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 11:37:02 AM)

Dont forget the sun block ! At those altitudes the air gets thin, so the sun gets in !

Also dont forget to read up about high altitude cerebral oedema, and also high altitude pulmonary oedema. And dont forget to wear clean undies

LanceHughes -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 11:46:08 AM)

The real reason you need sunblock is that there will be 2 miles less air / atmosphere / insulation covering you.  Do NOT blow-off the sunscreen because "I tan within micro-seconds."

Colorado has highest incidence of skin cancer.  We are not all standing outside in the sun, wearing bathing suits (or frilly panties in the male D-type instance.)  Just day-to-day "normal" exposure does it - winter snow melts quickly in Denver, because there is a mile less of atmosphere to keep sun away.

You asked for advice, please take it.

Not to be scary, but Colo. Pub. Health says 30% higher incidence.  (I had no idea so high.)
http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/ps/ccpc/skincancer.html

Of course, a one-week visit isn't going to cause skin cancer, but why take any kind of risk?  Some info on skin cancer says that any severe burn anytime in one's life is a risk factor for developing melanomia in later years.

Hey, just slather the stuff on and don't worry! 'Kay?

And take lots of pictures!  Digi Cam has extra cards, right?

igor2003 -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 12:20:13 PM)

On the TP issue...this probably goes without saying, but be sure to put each roll of TP into it's own ziplock bag! You can take rolls and rolls of TP, but one leaking water bottle, a slip and fall into a stream, a little extra sweat, or a light rain shower can make all your TP totally worthless if it isn't kept dry. Also, extra TP makes excellent tender for starting fires, so it's better to have too much rather than too little.

January -> RE: Colorado! (7/9/2010 12:24:25 PM)

And those zip lock bags come in real handy for those into "leave no trace"...
