Cool! I love that waterfall (if it is the one near the Dunes).

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 8:59:47 AM)

Yes, that's the waterfall!  And thank you WinD, I did have a blast for what I did get to do!

Here I am, in the cave at the base of the waterfall!  It was worth the wet shoes!

We stayed in Cuchara on the first night.  It was a great place!  Very pretty and there's a bar next to the hotel and a little shop.  It was way cool!

I have a bunch of family photos taken in that very same place. OMG the water is COLD!!!

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 9:22:49 AM)

I know!  Isn't that a great place?  I wish I could stay there!  Gosh, I really miss being outside in someplace with lots of cold water.  I want to go back!

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 9:25:55 AM)

Another from the falls.

RE:BEARS---don't use sticks unless they are baseball bats--or walking sticks as has been suggested; dont carry food or anything that smells like food in your backpack ---find someone in your group you dont like and ask them to carry it for you; cute little bears are not big dogs---they are bears and there is probably a big mean bear nearby. Unless you have a severe problem of some sort you probably will want to spend at least one day just bumming around before starting the climb. I have lived most of my life in flat Illinois but visit Colorado whenever I can--last fall I was at about 11,000 feet  just west of Denver and above Center City  Hiked around for a full afternoon with no problems--I am 82. Have a great climb.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 10:49:47 AM)

I couldn't make it that high.  I did get to bum around.  Yes, I realize that bears are not great big cute dogs.  As a matter of fact, I was very much afraid of running into one while I was there.  I'm glad I don't have to worry about bears anymore.  My tent-mate and I were laying in the tent, sleeping and I woke up about 4AM and I could have sworn I heard a bear sniffing round the outside of the temt.  I just laid very still and quiet and I listened for a bit and I heard someone snoring in the tent next to us, but I was pretty sure that that sniffing was a lot louder than that.  I was scared!

fitzroy10 -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 11:32:36 AM)

DS---I gave up sleeping in tents or on the ground when Uncle Sam cut me loose in 1952; except for a few Scout sleepovers with my boys I have been able to get by without breaking my promise to myself which I feel contributes to my longevity. That lodge you show in your picture is my idea of  roughing it.  Here is a picture I took last year looking down at Central City and the Blackhawk Casino which are at about 7000 feet altitude.  I estimate iItook the picture from a site about 8500-9000 feet and hiked up from there. Within 50 paces I was alone with peace and tranquility but always knowing I was going to sleep in a comfortable bed that night. (Well now I cant figure out how to attach the pic but take my word for it! I wouldn't kid anyone named Savage.)

Try replying by hitting the reply button in the top right hand corner of every post, then in the window that pops up, there's a link to attach a photo, be sure and check the box to embed the picture.

I'll say this much, what little of the trip I did get certainly wore me out.  I've been very sleepy most of the day and yesterday, too!

fitzroy10 -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 2:53:31 PM)

Thank you, DS here are 2 pictures from last year.  If you are not used to walking up hills or stairs in your everyday life your muscles will complain for a few days about your mistreatment of them.  But what the heck--whats a little pain among friends.

igor2003 -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 3:49:43 PM)

Welcome back. Cool pics! Thanks for sharing.

Now that you are back I'll share a little experience I had with you. Many years ago I went archery hunting with a friend and his wife. Our first morning there it was about dawn and we were still asleep when I heard a bunch of noise in the distance. Part of the noise I could tell was the baying of dogs. The noise quickly got louder and louder and I could tell part of the noise was the pounding of hooves and it sounded like it was right on top of us. I scrambled out of my sleeping bag as quick as I could, but by the time I was able to get out of the tent the noise was already receeding into the distance. My friend and his wife were just coming out of their tent about 15 feet away at the same time I was, but we really couldn't see anything as to what had caused all the noise. We finished dressing, ate breakfast, and headed out to do some hunting. We soon found some men on horseback. They were ranchers from the area that had been having problems with the bears in the area getting into their garbage. That morining they had been chasing one of the bears and had chased it right through our camp directly between our tents!

I would have shared that with you before you left, but then you might have backed out. Glad you had fun!

You can only put up one picture at a time.  I don't know what you did, but neither picture is up.  I hope you figure it out!

As for muscle soreness, I don't have any.  I'm just sleepy.  Well, not so much anymore, but I was surprised by how sleepy I was.  I hope I didn't blow my chances of sleeping tonight by taking a nap, though!

And thank you, igor, I did have a lot of fun!

DarlingSavage -> RE: Colorado! (7/14/2010 5:03:12 PM)

I keep meaning to add pictures with each post, and then I forget!  So, here's another picture.  This is a really cool outcropping of rock that was sticking up out of the mountain like a big wall!  I wish I could have gotten a better picture of it, but we were in the car.  There were several of these.

Colorado is a cracking part of the world, best place i've been to in the US. Did a lot of climbing, rafting and Kayaking out their a few years ago. I've done bigger hills since. Cilmbed Kilimanjaro last year too. Tips for acclimatisation is keep eating and drinking, the rest is up to chance.

Denver has a lot of fond memories too, that has a lot to do with a Hen party and a Jacuzzi..... You've got to love American girls. Filth.

My, my, my!  All the cuties are just crawling out of the woodwork today!  Unfortunately, they're all in Europe!  Here's another picture of the Cuchara Inn.  Golly, that place was breath-taking!
