Status: offline 		Her mom was one of my employees at my job. Her dad and my dad were acquaintances when I was a kid and she wasn't thought of yet, she's 18. I had actually talked to her once before about a winning ($10) lottery ticket that had gone missing. She insisted she hadn't seen it, so I chalked it up to the monster picking it up and playing with it...not something he'd normally do, but I trusted her. UGH   Ok Ok I'm calling.

A friend of mine had a worse story; she was living with a guy and his daughter, the daughter stole her cell phone, took pics of her private region, and sexted them to a couple of guys. One of the guy's mom saw it, and called my friend's phone, wanting to know what the fuck was going on

Status: offline 		Sophie this is going to sound extreme but when I have any aids and or therapists in my home and I have a few for my son. I require them to be finger printed and cleared just as if they were working in a school. (so its on a federal background check)

It doesn't stop everything but it weeds out alot of the BS.

The reality is they are working with my child, in my home. I need to know I am not letting any wackados in. There are agencies you can go through and most insurances will cover it through agencies and they do the back ground check ect. for you.

Status: offline 		Sophie...i am confused. How did you hire her....through who? An agency? Your sons school? If she was recommended to you, call whoever recommended her, as they may recommend her to others as well.
Is there any type of certification required as a personal assistant? If so, this may be something to look into as well.

Status: offline 		Background checks are optional for the system I use(d). I knew this girl, and knew her family long before she ever worked for me. She's never been in trouble for anything so a background check would not have helped. The only requirement is that the Assistant be at least 18 and provide two references. I will be calling upon my friend that had asked her to do some work with her Autistic daughter, in the morning.

Over here we have to undergo the police check and if we work with kids then the enhanced check will be necessary. For every employer i need a seperate check as they arent transferable.

Now for my new position they'll demand on top of it the references from at least the last 5 years as i'm likely to work with vulnerable children...

The finger prints are run on a state and federal level. There is no data base so if you switch to a different school (private) or school district you have to get it done again.

No, I've been close to her since she was 15. She's never been in any trouble. The officer that came to the house basically said the same thing...she's not been in trouble but she was told to watch her. I didn't say she'd never done anything wrong, I'm just saying she's never been caught before.

Negative.I got the living shit beat out of me by my father, I called the police thinking the same thing.My father cut himself and said that I cut him and that "I'm out of control".I went to jail for six months and got 30 of community service.

Police make matters worst.I'd take a beating from my father then spend another day in jail any day.

Status: offline 		I disagree. Your one negative experience with a dysfunctional father does not mean that involving the police on every occasion is wrong.

I was robbed - they caught the thief and he went to prison for 4 months. Thieving little shit deserved what he got.

I was assaulted, the guy was arrested but the courts decided not to prosecute (for a variety of reasons) and he got off. But he was totally humiliated and will now hopefully think twice before he does the same thing again, particularly as his details will still be on file. Maybe I have helped protect someone else - I hope so.

I have to disagree with you on that one and I would have called the police despite the ring back.

Simply because I would not want to be at risk if a PA would be working at my home and I know from my work with vulnerable adults and kids (since over 10 years) how they can be at risk of being exploited at times. Anyone only daring to do so should be named and shamed at the police, even more as quite frankly it is likely that this ring wasn't the only item she ever knicked at work...better to potentially stop it in early beginnings before that behaviour grows bigger and hurts more people.
