Clearer statement: mental illness is pandemic and doesn't discriminate much based on lifestyle choices, gender, race, sexual orientation, age, etc.

Setting aside the issue of some mental illnesses being caused by infectious disease that would be affected by lifestyle choices. While mental illness generally does not pick lifestyles, the mentally ill do pick lifestyles. Can we really assume that they choose evenly across the board or might there be a higher percentage of mental illness in say the pro-ana lifestyle?

100% of the "pro-ana" population would be mentally ill as anorexia is a mental illness. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and... fungi.

As far as I know, BDSM is no longer considered a mental illness. I do think that some use BDSM to cover up personal issues.

I'm under the impression that one doesn't need to be anorexic themselves to be pro-anorexia, that people who support anorexics also count as pro-ana. So that group isn't necessarily 100% mentally ill but it is a clear example of a lifestyle who's practitioners have a higher than average chance of mental illness.

I'm not trying to say that BDSM is a mental illness. What I am saying is that the mentally ill make lifestyles choices. I picked an example where it's easy to see people with a mental illness being attracted to groups that accept them or are at least not judgmental of them. So how do you know that mental illness exists equally in the vanilla and kink worlds? Is it possible that people who commit self harm to deal with a mental illness might be drawn to BDSM? Is it possible that such people might be drawn to BDSM as a way of committing that self harm?
