Interesting.

So let me see if I understand what you are saying.

Someone can make a reference to something that someone else does not believe in but if that second person politely affirms that he does not believe then he is the one being rude?

Is it not rude to foist your beliefs on others, regardless of whether it is well-intentioned?

Okay let me say it all slow-like.

What is the intent of "God bless you" - is it to let them know that you believe in God or is it to tell them you wish them well?

Now what is the intent of "No thanks I'm an atheist" - is there any significant meaning to this phrase other than to express one's religious beliefs?

Words are tricky. I bet if I said "that shit is pro" you'd imagine that my excrement held a day job.

I think what a lot of us are getting at is that it's probably pretty rude of someone to stand there with, what a lot of people would see, as a lame response.  "God bless you!"  "Yeah, well I'm an atheist."  What are we?  Five?  Just accept the blessing and go about your day.  Does it hurt you?  Does it make you feel less than a human being?  Does it diminish you in any way?

Sorry, I don't find it particularly useful to debate the meanings of phrases and words with someone who starts their post with
"Okay let me say it all slow-like".

I understand why you'd be annoyed by this guy invading your space with his religious hubris.  I can't stand these people who feel that they have a superior relationship with God and the right to bestow His blessing.   I can almost guarantee you this same strain of "Christian" voted for senators who just voted against extending funds for the disabled, medicare and unemployed.  And he sees no contradiction there.

Just out of curiositiy, what would have been your answer if he had said "be blessed", or "blessed be" (which is actually a wiccan greeting, but still leaves out any theistic concepts)?

A strange thing happened to me today. i was getting Donna out of the van (she's in a wheelchair and the van has a mechanical lift) at Burger King. Some guy we did not know, who was driving out of the parking lot, stopped behind us and called out his passenger window "God bless you". i said, (under my breath) "God doesn't want to bless me and i don't need it either".

what should one say or do in such a situation?

I've only gotten to page two, but I'm pretty sure my opinion of you won't change by the end. You are an idiot.
And I'm glad you aren't my next door neighbor.

yeh... that seems heinous.  How DARE he foist his greetings upon you using his value system!  It would have been much more in keeping with society if he had said, fuck you for getting the good parking, have a day.  Yeah.  Much better.

Oh please. You knew exactly the reaction you were going to get.
You love attention. The problem is, you haven't figured out how to get it in positive ways.
So you take the negative because without even that you'd be even more bitter and lonely.

edited to add...God bless you Mikey.

It didn't quite seem that you came for advice.  In fact, you got advice.  It just didn't suit you.  The difference is, most of the folks who replied have a much better way of seeing things than you do.

Oh yeah, telling someone to read a book that calls their belief system a delusion is just so polite and proper.

Telling someone to read Dawkins is invariably rude.  It's like telling them to read the Da Vinci code.  Why put another human being through that tedium?

Seriously people, there's a whole exciting world of atheist philosophers out there.  All of whom are far better than Dawkins.  Start with Bertrand Russell.

I have better things to do than get irritated that someone wants to wish me well.  Meh.

If you want to wish someone well then say "I wish you well".

No need to inject belief systems into it.

Let me see if I understand you correctly.  You want someone else to say the precise words of what YOU want them to say even if it goes against their own way of interacting in the world.  You expect others to re-arrange the way they talk to make you happy?  Seriously, people are saying something kind and loving.  You say to me, "I wish you well," and I'm wondering why you would throw Gorean philosophy at me AND I'm wondering why I give a flying fig what you think.  And I'm wondering about the high horse you are on.... that's if I took a few seconds to think about it.  (Obviously I just did)... in day to day life, I just accept the SPIRIT of what someone says to me.  I don't expect them to interact in the manner *I* prescribe to them.

If I had your attitude, I wouldn't last one week in another culture.

Is this seriously the thing that bugs you?  Honey, get over yourself, and live and let live.

best,
sunshine

Right on, Rule.

I have a Sri Lankan friend, she is Buddhist. When I first met her years back, and I went to a Sri Lankan party almost all the adult attendees greeted me by placing their hands together as if in prayer and slightly bowed. Boy, oh boy was I pissed off that they were inflicting their religious form of greeting on me. Bastards !

And another thing. I am Protestant. When my Dad died, my best friend < Catholic > gave us a Mass Card. A big ole Perpetual Mass card. She also lit candles at a Catholic Shrine. I couldn't believe my very best friend was trying to convert me and inflict her religious views on me and my family in our time of sorrow. On the one year anniversary of his death, she sent me yet another prayer card. She's a real bitch.

My cat is very sick and dying. My Wiccan friend is doing some sort of ritual for healing for my cat. She's a cunt too. < apologies to the Wiccans, I do not know the proper name for what she is doing >

Give me a break, RML. I would have few friends if I got myself all bunged up every time one of them who had a belief system different than mine did something that I personally don't believe in. I am happy to accept any well wishes, forms of condolence or support from anyone, whether it has a religious conotation or a cultural connotation that is different than mine.

Do these CM posters offend you, rml ? or you mikey ?

And there are hundreds more examples on this board where posters have said those words. I haven't seen either you or mikey pick on them or call them out for
" injecting a belief system "
