I also refuse to use the term African-American (well, I do use it, to refer to actual African-Americans, such as the Comedian Josh Blue who was raised in Africa and emigrated here. He's white.) Hyphenated Americans are, traditionally, immigrants, and extending the hyphen period even by a few generations (Chinese-Americans for instance) flies in the face of the melting pot theory. Extending it all the way back to colonization (slaves were brought over before this country was even a country) makes the melting pot seem impossible. Black Americans aren't African, they're Black Americans, and that includes some aspects of Heritage that are uniquely American.
