While we're at it, how is "colored" that much fuckin different than "people of color"? I refuse to call you all "African-Americans" because not all of you have heritage in country existing within the continent of Africa. White folk are happy being called white folk. So I'm guessing we had a rough moment sometime today, Jen? First, all us white folks had to start saying, "black," now we aren't supposed to. It's almost like a neurotic, depressed divorcee suddenly declaring to all the friends she has left that they now have to call her by her "new" name. You get one of those.

You weren`t supposed to.[:D] rich is still pissed he can`t use colored without getting looks,[:D] The answers and understanding about usage are in the history and context. It`s nothing to make a fuss over. The most important thing to keep mind is avoiding using those different names/words to divide.We must avoid people who also use them to divide folks.

"Black": Due to the ever changing nature of politically correct terms to address individuals of color and the fact that not all individuals of color are of African heritage, the term "Black" is used to specifically identify a group by racial characteristics specific to that group. As described in the paper above and in the "References", this specific racial group is genetically prone to certain diseases and statistically prone to certain social hardships.

I also refuse to use the term African-American (well, I do use it, to refer to actual African-Americans, such as the Comedian Josh Blue who was raised in Africa and emigrated here. He's white.) Hyphenated Americans are, traditionally, immigrants, and extending the hyphen period even by a few generations (Chinese-Americans for instance) flies in the face of the melting pot theory. Extending it all the way back to colonization (slaves were brought over before this country was even a country) makes the melting pot seem impossible. Black Americans aren't African, they're Black Americans, and that includes some aspects of Heritage that are uniquely American.
