Okay, maybe it's just me. (okay, it's just me) but I am boggled by the submissive-as-housemaid meme.

My family and I have no problem taking care of our house. I would love it if I had a slave who owned a lawn service and would cut the grass for cost, but other than THAT... I don't need anyone to do my laundry.

Yes, I do need/want someone who understands that service isn't fun and games every second. But I don't need help with grunt work.

The rest of you who don't have live in subs/slaves/servants, what do you think? What do you have your men do for you to make your life easier?

It isn't about needing help with the grunt work.  It's the concept of service making My life easier.  Even in your own example, you found something that would be more convenient for you.  In it, if you found someone to fill that, you would be saving either time or money.  That time or money, you can invest differently.  I tend to use Mine in the pursuit of being a better top, doing research, or investing in an event.  They just don't make enough hours in the day for Me to do everything that I want to do in BDSM.

Edited - Whoops.  I didn't exactly answer the question of what they actually do.  I really depends on what is actually needed and what strengths they have.  Don't think for a second that clip's never done My lawn while I was taking care of the arrangements to attend an event for the weekend.  That's one thing that is My territory in the household.  I'm the social calendar person.  Neither of them are any good at it.

Me, either, really. For instance, I need an Internet Slave. Someone to photograph stuff for Etsy and ebay and do the damn listings. Because I hates that shit.

What I am asking is, what skills do you look for/services do you need that are less traditional. Or am I the only one not wanting a housemaid?

I do have a couple who help around the house because I work all day as well as some evenings and just do not have time, plus there really isn't anyone else to help me with it.

Occasionally one will run errands or do a bit of research for me.

The bunny likes to fix snacks, get clean rags and change the water while I paint.

The best ever though helped me pick up a piece of furniture. He was prepared to the point of having a tarp to put down so he didn't have to have the dresser top touch the ground. I was very impressed.

Hm... well to the second question... I seem to have collected a few engineers lately and I am using one to help me figure out how to rig a restraint system for my shower.

But rather than picking a slave or sub for his skills I tend to pick the boy first and then make use of whatever skills he already has.

The only thing that occurs to Me that I would need as a specific would be a computer person.  My status as a computer twit is alive and well.  I have files, pics, and so on that are on older computers and hard drives that really need to be transferred, but I have neither the time or the ability to do it.  Of course, we're talking about something a little more sensitive than coming in to dust, so it's not something that I expect to find someone overnight to fit the bill.

We are not computer TWITS, LP! Or at least, I am not. I am a LUDDITE, and proud of it!

So really, I need to change and get someone with a cordless dustbuster to detail my car. Hm.

Oh well, I never claimed to be a traditionalist!

There are a lot of different skills that submissives are capable of offering that I've noticed vary from needs of various dominants. In the past, I've been tasked as a house slave, while at other times I've been called on to offer my services as a web designer or computer systems professional. It really has been an interesting journey in trying to discover what each person might want. I've been a service submissive most of my adult life, and it's something I've been very comfortable with, and in most cases it's been pretty fluid with the woman I've served at whatever specific time. If I could find someone in Michigan seeking that same sort of thing, I'd have jumped up in a heartbeat but quite often finding someone to connect with can be quite difficult.

True story (and I kid you not): in my local area Luddites were called Swingers, because all the petitions and notices were signed 'Captain Swing' as a universal alias. My history teacher found this hilarious.

That's neo-Luddite, Hib. The actual Luddites are all long dead . . . . .. . . . . ... Myself, I tend to think I'm more of a neo-Luddite technophile, cuz I do loves me the modern stuff . . . .

The only house-maid like attribute I miss from my ex was that he would peel & chop fruits & veggies for me.

Personally, in an anticipatory framework, personal assistant & secretarial type stuff is much dearer to my heart than cleaning & maintenance skills . . . .. . .

Hmmmmmmm . . . . . . Given that:

crypto- before a vowel, crypt-
combining form
secret, hidden, or concealed

I'd say you're probably more of a would-be or an erstwhile crypto-Luddite, lol . . . . ..

I do need house help. I have fibromyalgia and a bad foot from a car wreck some years back. If you want me to have the energy and enough left in my "standing budget" to give a good flogging, then you better be prepared to do some of the things that require standing and lifting around here. That's just all.

A lot of what we do are things I find mutually enjoyable and productive. Dealing with the laundry is one; we have lovely chats while he is hanging up the hangables and I am sitting there folding the foldables. Then I pinch his ass when he walks by with a full basket and see if he drops it, and if he does I paddle him a bit. (giggle) It's just sort of a running series of fun games for us.  He is a foot fetishist and so I get my toenails painted and he gets to handle my feet. Win-win. Also, I have much less overall pain if I have had several good orgasms that week. If I am happy, he gets to come too. I tend to be very good at making life more interesting and enjoyable for those in my orbit.

I don't have a live in; I'm new to my domme-liness, but I would love to find someone into being domestic. I'm a chef, so probably one of his tasks would be cooking at home. After I just spent 6 or 8 or 13 hours doing nothing but working with food, the last thing I want to do is come home and cook. I stay stocked with spaghetti-o's and salad just so I don't have to. Perhaps that is something more "traditional", but it surely would make my life easier and probably healthier.

I've asked servants to polish my motorbike (gosh I hate doing that), handle my filing (again -- one task I could definitely do without... but I -do- like being able to grab what I want when I want it!!), hang an interior hammock, assist with packing and loading for a move or to put things into storage, and to Dewey my standing hard-copy library and add new books (and even bookshelves) accordingly.

I don't have a huge house to maintain, so I don't need someone to spend -all- of the time on the house. These days, I eat very, very simply... so taking care of the house takes less than an hour a week, and even buying and preparing food is only about 40 minutes out of a day. Frankly, for servants who don't "live in" (which, since SR and I are divvying up our household, includes -all- of them on my end for now), what they do is completely variable. Heck, sometimes, all I want is someone to listen to me rant without getting all huffy and rolling hir eyes after about 5 minutes!

This. OMG. Active listening without trying to FIX! But that is asking a man to behave... unnaturally!

Piece of cake.  All you have to do is lean forward, frown a bit, then go 'Yes, yes - I hear you. [Repeat what she's just said].  Hmmm.  And how does that feel?'

Actually, I'd be happier with "shut up and nod" -- as long as your eyes aren't glazed over!

Heh.  I bet someone, somewhere, has written a computer program that'll do all this listening-actively stuff.  It wouldn't be at all difficult, I shouldn't think:  all it needs is a sensitive-looking-animation-man with an earnest high forehead (and wearing a compassionate woolly jumper, for instance), who'll just keep nodding while staring dynamically at the screen.  As soon some sensor registers that the woman's stopped talking, it can say, with great emotion, stuff like "oh, that sounds awful", "poor you", "I know, I know - they're all the same, aren't they?", and shit.
