Its already past that point, willbe.

The thread or our education system? (or both!)

The thread. I homeschooled my son.

I don't understand. It's my kid.

That's the problem. That kid is an independent being who deserves every opportunity possible.

Why should schools teach the sort of things this school district wants to teach?

1) What if the child is being abused by a single parent. Do you think that parent is likely to tell the kid how to stop/prevent abuse?
2) Some adults, due to their own piss poor education, have little but misinfrmation to impart on the subject.
3) Some parents just cannot bring themselves to talk to their children about sex.
4) Some people have religious beliefs that they believe precludes their children from needing to know about sex.

Oh god! I remember those too, only we got them at school, in pink bags, and had to deal with the horrible teasing from the boys. Some memories should just... not be memories.

I don't remember any such occurence at my school and I was a horrid little monster that would have taken great delight in tormenting the girls over it. Seems like a recipe for tears a plenty to me.

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 4:10:12 PM)

We were mean girls, we just beat the guys up who teased us with our pink packs.

If parents want to opt out, thats fine. And if these said parents have a child that is sexually abused, and something arises in the course of the case (provided there is one) that proves an educational sex education class could have helped prevent said abuse, then the parents should be willing to take on the responsibility of their own inability to teach their children and end up with the same sentence as the perpetrator, yes?

I have to ask.

How did we make the huge leap from talking about sex education to sexual abuse?

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 4:54:17 PM)

Read the thread, rule. If you cant follow the posts, blame yourself.

Maybe we should call him for what he is "A Bush In Obama's Clothing".

This is truly one of those unsolvable mysteries of nature.

Bush was elected twice by people who really didn't want him in office.

How about if I blame you instead?

The purpose of sex education is not the prevention of sexual abuse.

While that can be part of it, you seem to believe it should be the focus.

Children should be aware of the dangers but not indoctrinated to the point that they fear anything sexual.

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 5:09:51 PM)

Try reading the thread, rule. Seems you are the only one coming up with your conclusion about that being the point of my posts.

AsmodaisSin -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 5:18:52 PM)

I've got to agree with Rulemylife.  Y'all keep jumping to molestation and sexual abuse.  I'm confused.  Educate your children about these kinds of horrible things, but give the parents the chance to educate their children if they have the inclination to do so.

thornhappy -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 5:20:48 PM)

He isn't.  The article was written to imply that it was an Administration mandate, not something Montana's working on all by its lonesome.  The article and the thread's title is incredibly misleading.

I didn't have time to do more than skim the plan but it seems to do this in order to teach kindergartners what inappropriate touching is.  It's sad that this is considered necessary.

What the hell would Obama be doing on some plan that is focused on Montana schools, anyway?

My daughter had sex education last yr (her freshmen yr in high school) permission slips where sent home to every parent that had to be signed BEFORE the students could participate in it. Those that either did not have permission slips or whos parents did not want them attending the sex ed. classes were sent to study hall. I personally opted out. I have been educating my daughter about her body since she was old enough to walk. I have been teaching her about good touch and bad touch since she was old enough to talk. I have been talking to her about sex and how it tempting and seems like no big deal but the risks both physical and mental that come along with having sex at a young age since she 11 (soon after she started her period).

When I used to teach pre-k we taught body parts to the kids. Yes, we used correct terms. Yes, parents were totally aware. We did this because the boys and girls were noticing the difference between boys and girls. We wanted them to understand it was not okay for a little boy to go into the bathroom with a girl and why. We wanted them to understand certain social boundaries about their bodies and their peers bodies. Why? Well duh even pre-school children are discovering and exploring their bodies and the bodies of their friends.

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 5:25:28 PM)

Actually, you are the one who took this thread from education to criminal behavior. If you recall, it was your comment that we, as a society, cannot tell parents how to raise their children. I pointed out just how wrong you are and gave many examples of how we do.

Show me where i ever said it would prevent. I said empower the children.

The focus of sex education is protection in many ways.

I posted the contents based upon grade level of what these children are to be taught. There was nothing in there anywhere about any child fearing sex. Nor have i posted anything suggesting we should teach anything even close to that.

Good for you.  This is all I want.  I want the option to do exactly that and be given the opportunity to be a real parent without the school automatically assuming that I'm an inept one.

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama supports sex ed for kindergartners........wtf? (7/14/2010 5:32:42 PM)

I would think... and hope... you would teach your children far more than the school system is desiring to teach in that article.

Most schools districts do give parents the option of not having their children participate in sex education at any level that I have ever seen.

I will also say that when my daughters science class studied creationism I opted out of that for her as well. You can opt out school curiculium if it goes against your personal, religious, or moral believes and typically schools dont question it much.

Why is that a mystery? As recent history has proven, anybody would be better than a Democrat.

And i dont believe any parent should have the option of being allowed to "opt" out. Sets up the stage for abuse that the course is supposed to help try and prevent through education.

Why would you opt her out of that? It would be far more instructive to let her hear it and then tear it apart.

I disagree obviously. I also disagree that sex education is set up to prevent abuse or to stop abusers.
