Congress to raise retirement age?

Besides raising the retirement age for full Social Security benefits to 70 for people now 50 or younger, Mr. Boehner suggested curbing benefit growth by tying cost-of-living increases to the consumer price index rather than growth in wages, and providing benefits only to those who need them.

"If you have substantial non-Social Security income while you're retired, why are we paying you at a time when we're broke?" he said. "We just need to be honest with people."

Your source.... and its about time!

They take the money from us without asking, then they use the money  for everything BUT the promised purpose. Then, when there is no money when its time to retire they laugh in our faces.

But its unsafe to let us to invest our own money our own way, they say...

"I'm from the government, and we're here to help" indeed.

I'm not a fan of the gov't taking cash from citizens for "social security" and then not giving it to those same citizens because the gov't has determined that those citizens make "too much". Have you read any of the qualifying guidelines for some of these programs these days? You practically have to be homeless to qualify for "help". I don't think citizens who have been paying into this system should have to go homeless to get what they've been paying into all along.

I am 100% for it!

Besides, a person can retire at age 45..........IF they've planned for it and have the $$!

The system is designed to help those who did not have the help they needed at the time the system was implemented. I have long disagreed with SS not being income based. There is always the potential of being rich beyond belief one day, and being dead broke the next, as we have often seen with the wild swings of the stock market and law suits. Its a reality of life, and i view SS as a hedge fund against such drastic turns.

someone who retires with a "substantial non-Security income" doesnt need that hedge at that moment. They may in a few years, depending on their investments and such. At which time their need will be evident, and they should become eligible. The maximum payment into the system is half employee, half employer.

quote:

The OASDI tax rate for wages paid in 2010 is set by statute at 6.2 percent for employees and employers, each. Thus, an individual with wages equal to or larger than $106,800 would contribute $6,621.60 to the OASDI program in 2010, and his or her employer would contribute the same amount. The OASDI tax rate for self-employment income in 2010 is 12.4 percent.

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/cbb.html

I have yet to see this benefit set to an income test, meaning eveyone draws from the system, regardless of personal wealth or lack thereof. Someone with substantail wealth would not even miss the $6600 plus, but i would be all for advocating the ability to take it as a deduction on their own taxes.

Why should this age group get delayed 2x tho?

Younger people already were put off to age 67.   so under 50 is -- a 2nd jab.

Because the system is going broke. It isnt right that we have to wait longer, but since we are the ones who keep employing the idiots in congress who keep "misdirecting" those funds, thereby causing the system to be broke, we might as well take the responsibility for our actions.

In other words... we did it to ourselves.

Because theyve received the greatest increase in life expectancy, the cause of the problem in the first place.

Ditto! It's not the "gov't's" money to begin with!

And what about the younger people who didn't vote for these idiots and are gonna have to deal with this now? It's their problem? They did this to themselves?

Actually, the cause of the problem is redirection of funds. But let's ignore that fact for right now hmmm...???

Nor did you vote to recieve said benefits to begin with. You werent around then. You get what you get till you get old enough to change the system. Same as me.

You should ignore it, because it isnt a "fact". There has been no "redirection of funds", there has been investments. Period.

Considering your investment policy is "buy high and pray" I wouldnt enter into an investment discussion with adults.

They need to do something in addition. Obviously the US economy is not going to create enough jobs. Optimist economists predict unemployment levels to drop to base 5% level in about 10 years. Now many institutions force people to retire early because of the budget shortages. Perhaps mandatory 4 days 32 hours work week  would help with the situation.
