An unemployed welfare recipient 40's single mom of two (by different and long lost fathers) two houses up the street from me got the government to purchase her home in return for her taking in and taking care of her sister's three kids after her welfare recipicient single mom sister was imprisoned for child abandonment and welfare fraud. Her 17 year old live at home non-working daughter has a 1.5 yo son and is now 3 months pregnant (also by different and never around fathers), and her 15 year son just left home to attend a military prep school on public funding. That's one non-working 40 yo, four non-working teenagers and one baby living in their own $450,000 house and one teenager going to an expensive prep school all on public funding. Those of you who don't think tax-payers have a right to know who's living off our hard-earned money are more than welcome to pick up the tab and give us a refund.

I call bullshit on this scenario. Welfare recipients are limited in the assets they can own, in order to qualify for assistance. A $450,000.00 home paid for by the government? Pfft, yeah right. A woman on welfare owning a $450,000.00 home paid for by the government and qualifying for assistance? Ludicrous.

Apparently you already know who is abusing the system, so what would be the point of posting a public list? That would just take up more tax money. And if there was such a list, what would you do with it? Use it to harass the people that are on it?

Yes, there are people that abuse the system. So while we are at it let's make tax return information a matter of publc record so we can find all the tax cheats. And let's make our voting record a matter of public record so when a president starts an unpopular and unnecessary war only the people that voted for him can pay for that war.

The way things are may not be perfect, but to make some things public, including a list of the people getting assistance, is just stupid.

Let me clue you on some facts. The way the public assitance laws are now set up someone only gets them for a limited amount of time. This stops people from living off them forever and not beocoming self sufficient.

I will also point out that those on public assistance, aren't living a life of luxury by any means.  Infact they typically life just above the poverty level. Not a real personal choice for MOST people.

Also, if she is caring for children NOT hers she has a right to recieve assistance for those children. Why? The state looks at her like they look at any foster parent. That is what she essentially is, a foster parent.

There are programs out there that help low income households become home owners but none of those programs "give" people homes.

I am curious how you know this woman is on welfare or so much about her life or the lives of her family. Or are you simply making ALOT of assumptions based on your own personal issues and prejudices or you are simply fabricating something based on your own personal prejudices and hysteria.

A blow-job worthy post!

pahunkboy -> RE: Should welfare people be made public? (7/15/2010 10:02:01 AM)

A portion of the people in my zip code are on food stamps.

As it was pointed out- one can have maybe 2k in assets.

I had weatherization here.  That is a program.     Think about the 2k rule.   How much does it cost to run your house, then figure 2k was the rule in the 80s and still is.   2k in the bank would pay how much rent and utilities?

DaddysInkedSlut -> RE: Should welfare people be made public? (7/15/2010 10:21:59 AM)

A survey conducted in 1999, showed that about 6,300 military families were on food stamps. That was a dramatic drop from the 12,000 who received aid in 1995. So should these men and women be placed on the list as well?

By 2005, the number had increased to nearly 26 million while a government report issued earlier this year found that more than 32 million people are on food stamps.

That equates to roughly one in 10 Americans receiving government aid for food at a rate of approximately $118 per person.

With unemployment continuing to climb and mixed economic indicators causing further volatility on Wall Street, it appears the rise in food stamps is unlikely to cease any time soon.

An interesting article about Troops on foodstamps.

purepleasure -> RE: Should welfare people be made public? (7/15/2010 11:06:15 AM)

Should assistance recipients across the board be made public?  IMO, no.

Should the individuals who have fraudulently received benefits they were not entitiled to be made public?  Yes.

There is no shame in receiving assistance if it is truly needed to survive.  The folk that have "rode the gravy train" because it was easier than working... shame on them.

The story kind of reminded me of the ones going around when Regan was president.  The welfare moms with Cadillacs and such.

Like anything else, a couple rotten apples spoil all of them.  (Unless you are making cider.)

I am not in favor of treating ANYONE who recieves ANY public money this way - but the whole concept does beg to be questioned - what public money are we talking about? WIC? Free lunches to school children? Are we talking about the free lunches and food stamps given to foster parents as part of their reimbursement?

It is a fireable offense to disclose any info about a child being free or reduced.

"I personally believe ALL people who receive welfare, section 8 housing, Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income should be available via public record and easily accessible on the internet. The names of those receiving these benefits would also be listed in ALL local, county, state and federal buildings too."
Would you like to see information on every person that is receiving public money be made easily accessible to the public? Why or why not? Comment below.

My question is this: What purpose would it serve to publicize such data for public knowledge?

Why? To publicly shame them or humiliate them? For what reason? What would be the point? Would you like it if all your private information was made public? i will say right now that, yes, for about four years i have received Social Security Disability. i worked my freaking ass off for many years before that ever since i was 18, and then i was destroyed with severe bipolar disorder which had me completely unable to work for the last four years. Now, my meds are straightened out, i'm feeling normal again, and i'm going to school to refresh my training and get my license back so i can go back to work. Do you really think i and many others really need that sort of humilation and embarrassment when we are working our asses off to get our shit together the best we possibly can?

For that matter, what about the seniors who are rightfully receiving Social Security and/or living in subsidized housing? Social Security is "public money" that they've worked for and paid into. Should they be humiliated too? i don't think so. i think it would be a much better idea to list publicly the names of those people who are sex offenders and violent criminals. They are the ones who need to be made known publicly so people can watch out for them and avoid them.

Okay, i apologize if i seriously offended anyone. Anyway, now i'm off my soapbox. lol Whew!

I think how " hard it is" or not depends on the case or something. My best friend, she's been trying for years, and she's got a 3 year old she's the main care taker of. She can't get SSI or help or jack diddly shit and she's been trying for years.

My neighbors sister is mentally retarded, and blows all her rent on candy and stuff, and she still is allowed to stay on SSI even though she mis uses it to buy candy and other fun things, to the point she has no money for food or rent, and comes calling to her sister, come help me I don't have money........

I was approved the very first time I tried.

My now X was on it, and they tried to take him off of it, because he tested to smart in some of their mental screenings. Despite the fact he was disabled.

And what you get, isn't always a paltry amount, but maybe then it don't seem paltry to me, because I've never had anything else to compare it to.

The lady I mentioned above gets about 600 a month. It'd be more than enough to live on in her situation, if she didn't blow it all on candy, and cigarettes.

Considering just how hard it is to even GET SSI or SSD, and how paltry the amount actually is, I think a list of those folks so we can send them stuffs might be nice!

There are absolutely miss-uses of the system but that does not warrant subjecting those that have been forced into using the system to public ridicule.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Should welfare people be made public? (7/15/2010 12:24:22 PM)

If you're reply is directed my way, I never said it did, I did however say, it's not always that hard to get on SSI, and it's not always a pitiful amount given to you every month.
