I think how " hard it is" or not depends on the case or something. My best friend, she's been trying for years, and she's got a 3 year old she's the main care taker of. She can't get SSI or help or jack diddly shit and she's been trying for years.

My neighbors sister is mentally retarded, and blows all her rent on candy and stuff, and she still is allowed to stay on SSI even though she mis uses it to buy candy and other fun things, to the point she has no money for food or rent, and comes calling to her sister, come help me I don't have money........

I was approved the very first time I tried.

My now X was on it, and they tried to take him off of it, because he tested to smart in some of their mental screenings. Despite the fact he was disabled.

And what you get, isn't always a paltry amount, but maybe then it don't seem paltry to me, because I've never had anything else to compare it to.

The lady I mentioned above gets about 600 a month. It'd be more than enough to live on in her situation, if she didn't blow it all on candy, and cigarettes.

How quickly you get approved or if you get approved depends on the medical documentation that you have. I expected to get denied at least once, everyone told me to expect it. I was approved after a yr. without any hitch. However, my disabilities are well documented.

My son who is autistic and on the extreme of the spectrum was approved within 4 mths.  He had to go to a speech therapist and state doctor prior to approval but that is simply part of the process sometimes.

I will also point out that you probably shouldn't judge how others spend their money since you have openly admited you have not always spent yours the most wisely. Plus if she is mentally challenged, she has her own battles to fight and shouldn't be judged for those short coming. Perhaps instead of judging her negatively or harshly you should suggest to someone that cares for her that she get a payee. And IF you truly believe she is a danger to herself because of how she spends ect then perhaps even calling adult protective services would be a real steap to take.

For me, it took almost 2 years to get my disability.  Mom got hers instantly (without dealing with the state doctor).  She is my payee (she controls my money).  If the person had a medical  and finicial(?) guardan, it is their job to amke sure she has the money for rent, food, dr. appt.  and so forth.  If the sister is such a guardan, she is the one messing up and should have someone else appointed to be that guardan.

That state you live in is also a factor in SSDI/SSI.

My son gets SSI and I am his payee and I admit there have been times I have considered getting a payee for both of us from the state but instead my SIL helps me keep my budget and we have found ways to make sure my check book stays up to date.

No absolutely not, unless its a crime now?

Heh.  Over one in ten people ticked the 'Yes' box of this poll - welfare claimants' names should be made public.

Yet none of this ten percent has spoken on this thread.

Some incongruity there, I fancy.  They demand openness and transparency from welfare claimants - yet would like to keep their opinions on that matter utterly secret?

Tut, tut . . . . lack of moral backbone, hmm?   [;)]

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: Should welfare people be made public? (7/15/2010 3:19:56 PM)

When my father went insane for the second time, mom had to go to the welfare office.  She should have been sent to Social Security by them but wasn't.

Mom had had to stick us with a relative in Norco, California for about a year while she worked to get money to relocate herself, as well as paying in money to her sister to feed and house us.  When she could, she relocated from Florida to California and looked up an old ex-boyfriend and lived with him and took us back from our aunt.

Then came the welfare.  In California, people wait about 6 hours in the lobby to see a worker.  Mom got an apartment and a job through the welfare...and her job knew about it and hated her for it.  She was a waitress, and the owner/manager ran the cash register and seated people.  The b*tch told all the customers that mom was on welfare, and that since she was getting *all that money* that they didn't need to leave her any tips.  Waitresses get paid about 1/3 of minimum wage and rely on tips to make up the difference.  Because this was through the welfare, mom wasn't allowed to quit.  She also sat the "bums" down in mom's station, all the known "no tippers", and seated decent customers in a decent woman's station.  You know, not with some mother who was on welfare.

Her worker told her that if she wanted to stay at home with her kids so that nobody would molest them again, all she had to do was get preggies and they would get off her back until the baby was 5 years old, when the W.I.N. Program would kick in and foce her to leave us with ANYBODY just to go to work.  Yes, he kindly offered to knock her up...

There's another wonderful thing about being on welfare.  I was 6 years old and kept growing together "down there", it's called labial fusion.  Welfare payed for a GP to take a scalpel...and without any pain killer...cut me open and stuff the area with cotton.  Blood curdling screams during the procedure and with every time I peed.  I grew back together in about a week, so week after week after week after week for half a year this went on.  They wouldn't pay for a specialist.

In the end, because mom needed to take care of me, she took on two full time jobs to pay for the specialist.  Consequently pedophiles went and had a party on me, as cheap babysitters cannot be relied on.  Mom ended up putting me in a place called Hollygrove.  Think orphanage, cottages style with 6 kids per house mother.  She only did this because she found an older woman babysitter who was reliable but wouldn't watch two little kids, and so mom had to put me in this institution, thinking it would be easy to get me out later.  Their counselor tricked me there into saying my mother didn't feed me (she left food on the bottom shelf of the fridge, in tupperware containers), as they showed me the "normal" family life of mommy in the kitchen and the family sitting down all together to be fed.  They wrested custody of me away from her over this and I am very bitter about this.  To get me back, mom had to present a "normal" family, yes, she had to take my father back.  (The monster who used to beat us from head to toe leaving whopping bruises, just as a tool to control her and force her to obey.)  Luckily, after she got me back, soon afterward my father went out of the picture again for a while.

All this trouble over something that could have been fixed with a trip to a specialist...guys...I needed hormone cream applied topically.  That's all.  No more doctor visits to be cut open again and again.

I had to pay out of my own pocket when I was a grown up to correct some of the damage done from being cut open there, and...when I get pain during sex (I'm allergic to ejaculate), like if the condom comes off inside, I get something called vaginisthmus(sp?)  Really hard muscle spasms that can't be broken through with a chisel.  It doesn't happen often though.

This is the charmed life of welfare recipients.  It's such a wonderful life.  <that was in the sarcasm font, lol>

I didn't check yes, but it would be My opinion that anybody who did was probably smacked in the face with a little humanity if they read some of these comments here.  Some of these have been heart-wrenching to read, and I wanted to take the time to say thank you to all of the folks who shared such personal memories.

That's the part that we forget when they start debating topics such as this.  Those statistics aren't numbers.  They really are people who paid into this system when things were better and needed help when things weren't so good.  When things get better again, some of them will be paying back in.  When times are hard, they are hard enough.  There's no reason to make them worse.

Tho I am glad they still voted.   I was trying for an accurate poll.

CYN,   the people who lived next door had their kids taken away.   I had not known anyone until then.  I knew 2 families that the state visited here.   For now- I do not think it is heavy handed here.

I think lobbyests drain the public way more then a batch of people getting food stamps.

FR.

I don't envy anyone who is unemployed, people like to feel useful it's human nature.

This instinct to feel useful is even more important than the wages that get paid for doing a job and many employers exploit it.

What is the advantage to anyone of knowing who is unemployed and seeking a means to survive?

Which doesn't really have anything to do with your poll.  It sounds more like the idea came from some cold-hearted people who wanted publicize the names of folks on welfare for the shame factor.

Being that Pennlive pushed that lame comment- it could have been a ploy to drive traffic there- boost subscriptions.    The comments there were many against it.   I wanted to run it past CM crowd tho.  It is easier to follow up and understand the posts - this way.

It is telling tho- that people understand that invasion of privacy can lead to harassment- in so far as this topic goes.

Of my polls- I don't think any had this much participation- certainly not in the past 6 months.   (for me)
