When my father went insane for the second time, mom had to go to the welfare office. She should have been sent to Social Security by them but wasn't.
Mom had had to stick us with a relative in Norco, California for about a year while she worked to get money to relocate herself, as well as paying in money to her sister to feed and house us. When she could, she relocated from Florida to California and looked up an old ex-boyfriend and lived with him and took us back from our aunt.
Then came the welfare. In California, people wait about 6 hours in the lobby to see a worker. Mom got an apartment and a job through the welfare...and her job knew about it and hated her for it. She was a waitress, and the owner/manager ran the cash register and seated people. The b*tch told all the customers that mom was on welfare, and that since she was getting *all that money* that they didn't need to leave her any tips. Waitresses get paid about 1/3 of minimum wage and rely on tips to make up the difference. Because this was through the welfare, mom wasn't allowed to quit. She also sat the "bums" down in mom's station, all the known "no tippers", and seated decent customers in a decent woman's station. You know, not with some mother who was on welfare.
Her worker told her that if she wanted to stay at home with her kids so that nobody would molest them again, all she had to do was get preggies and they would get off her back until the baby was 5 years old, when the W.I.N. Program would kick in and foce her to leave us with ANYBODY just to go to work. Yes, he kindly offered to knock her up...
There's another wonderful thing about being on welfare. I was 6 years old and kept growing together "down there", it's called labial fusion. Welfare payed for a GP to take a scalpel...and without any pain killer...cut me open and stuff the area with cotton. Blood curdling screams during the procedure and with every time I peed. I grew back together in about a week, so week after week after week after week for half a year this went on. They wouldn't pay for a specialist.
In the end, because mom needed to take care of me, she took on two full time jobs to pay for the specialist. Consequently pedophiles went and had a party on me, as cheap babysitters cannot be relied on. Mom ended up putting me in a place called Hollygrove. Think orphanage, cottages style with 6 kids per house mother. She only did this because she found an older woman babysitter who was reliable but wouldn't watch two little kids, and so mom had to put me in this institution, thinking it would be easy to get me out later. Their counselor tricked me there into saying my mother didn't feed me (she left food on the bottom shelf of the fridge, in tupperware containers), as they showed me the "normal" family life of mommy in the kitchen and the family sitting down all together to be fed. They wrested custody of me away from her over this and I am very bitter about this. To get me back, mom had to present a "normal" family, yes, she had to take my father back. (The monster who used to beat us from head to toe leaving whopping bruises, just as a tool to control her and force her to obey.) Luckily, after she got me back, soon afterward my father went out of the picture again for a while.
All this trouble over something that could have been fixed with a trip to a specialist...guys...I needed hormone cream applied topically. That's all. No more doctor visits to be cut open again and again.
I had to pay out of my own pocket when I was a grown up to correct some of the damage done from being cut open there, and...when I get pain during sex (I'm allergic to ejaculate), like if the condom comes off inside, I get something called vaginisthmus(sp?) Really hard muscle spasms that can't be broken through with a chisel. It doesn't happen often though.
This is the charmed life of welfare recipients. It's such a wonderful life. <that was in the sarcasm font, lol>
