I teach chavs who are the children of chavs. Parents permanently on welfare, knock-off tracksuits and trainers, fake tan and bling.

But once you get over the absolutely horrid 'uniform' that these kids wear, they're just kids underneath. And many are really lovely kids who will hopefully grow out of their chavness and become decent human beings. For some, they can't help being chavs because that's all they know.

Give 'em a chance - they may well surprise you! [:D]

And Essex doesn't have a reputation for being unstylish - but they do have the image of white stilletos and dancing around handbags.[;)]
And white socks with black shoes.

Just saying.

Well if this pic is a chav they are all over the place not just in the UK. Although the fashion has moved on from this somewhat we saw this look a few years ago.

I dont understand how a handbag is chavish? Dont most chicks carry them?

Loads of a-holes talk loud on their phones not only chicks dressed like this. People have been bellowing on their phones for yonks now.

VaguelyCurious -> RE: Chavs....don't you just hate them? (7/15/2010 11:52:52 AM)

Do you not consider these things unstylish? [:D]

White socks with black shoes is unstylish. There is no getting past that, I'm afraid.

Actually depends on the socks and the shoes. I have a cute pair of heeled mary janes that I have worn with those super short white socks and I think it looks super cute. That is me though.

Pfft... don't ask me about fashion - I'm in Essex.[:D](Although I reserve the right to be known as the cockney sparrow, not the essex girl).

White socks with black shoes are better than socks and mandles any day though.

Peon, Cheltenham isn't in Essex, it's in Gloucestershire.(Says the essex girl[:)])
Yeah, and as VC said, it's the croyden facelift.[:D]

Whoops - I always mix up Cheltenham with Chelmsford.  [:(]

Just gone a-googlin' - it seems that the Chelmsford Average thing is quite a popular belief, though the bigger consensus goes with the Romany derivation (chavvy=youth - or similar - apparently).

I'm entirely willing to take your word for it regarding Essex girls' stylishness, T.D.  I've only ever seen them in newspapers.

PeonForHer -> RE: Chavs....don't you just hate them? (7/15/2010 12:07:01 PM)

Style varies from the UK and the USA, VC, obviously.  I'm still getting over my astonishment that they're advertising Old Spice aftershave there in the US.  My Dad's the only one I know who still uses it.  Even his mates laugh at him.

Nonono, we're talking about the mens! Black dress shoes with white socks and a dark suit=NOT COOL.

Mary janes are a whole separate issue-I'm sure they look lovely [:)]

Old Mice is enjoying a revival here indeed Peon, the fact that the actor chap doing the ads is quite delicious really helps, the ads are much better than the product of course.
Im just waiting for the brylcream ads to start again.
Regarding Chavs, they didnt have that name when I lived there so I had to look at thechavsUK site which made me feel very sad.
Edited to add the old  spice chappy giving advice to President Obama

Awww... see I find that endearing.  I dislike old spice, but it does bring back fuzzy feelings when I get a whiff because it reminds me of when I was a little girl.  How old is your dad (if you dont mind me asking)?  See if he's in his late 50's or older, that's kinda sweet.[:)]

I wish your accents read through the posts, I love the Brit accent, all the various patois's of them! Yay English accents!

We'll, to get a bit of a grip of how they speak, try this ;

or those down my neck of the woods ;

You wouldn't say that if you were exposed to brum for 24 hours straight, they use the brummy accent at gitmo to torture illegal combatants.

FACT!

PeonForHer -> RE: Chavs....don't you just hate them? (7/15/2010 4:32:24 PM)

FR

Origin of 'chav', from a Romano language glossary at http://www.larp.com/jahavra/language.html

Chavi - girl
Chava - boy

So there it is.

The only other word I recognised was 'kushti', meaning 'good' - which has made its way into Cockney.  But a lot of the words look/sound like they've got English roots.

Elisabella -> RE: Chavs....don't you just hate them? (7/15/2010 4:43:28 PM)

They're not exactly Chavs but we have girls like that in Australia too. Skunk hair girls with too much eyeliner, too short skirts, and $50 vinyl handbags with a D&G or LV logo on it.

And they seem to date guys whose entire wardrobe consists of t-shirts, hoodies, jeans that don't fit, track pants that don't fit, and sneakers.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Chavs....don't you just hate them? (7/15/2010 4:57:51 PM)

Chav = Sarah Palin's kids

This is the actual translation.
