When faced with budget shortfalls, politicians usually threaten to cut services and personnel they hope their constituents will rush to protect. Policemen and teachers are favorite sacrificial lambs. When the public screams, they can claim they need a tax increase to avoid doing so.

This way they don't have to cut their family members, welfare beaurecrats, etc. Or, for that matter, police beaurecrats....

Mike, if you want to be "Alan Alda" "Mr. sensitive" crying towel to the downtrodden of the whole world go right ahead! But do it with your own funds, not mine.
Far from being "bitter" I'm a fairly happy white man. You don't sound too happy lately, Obama not living up to your expectations?
The differance here is that I'd close welfare offices and you'd close police stations and fire stations.
What kind of mismanagement has the city of Oakland, Calif. been involved in that brings them to this point?
It doesn't sound like they've been doing a very good job of "managing" the Taxpayer's money does it?
That's how people get "de-elected."
