Passport Fees Scheduled To Increase.
It used to free if you wanted renounce your US citizenship. You could do that for free. Now, it's going to cost $450. Ms. SPRAGUE: That's true.

The United States is the only country that bases taxes on citizenship. All other countries base it on residency. Since all US citizes have to pay US taxes no matter what country they live and work in, some who have dual citizenships may renounce their US citizenship to avoid paying taxes to two countries at the same time. The $450 one time fee sucks but it's better than paying taxes in both countries every year.

When you leave the US you should be GIVEN $450 as an apology for the abuse you endured, not CHARGED $450. Makes no sense.

US has had an 'emmigration' tax for years for the rich. Never a good sign.

There is no double taxation. There is an offset to US taxes for taxes paid to the foreign country. You wind up paying the higher of the two, but anyone working as an ex-pat has their compensation adjusted if taxes are higher in the other country.

Are you REALLY this stupid? Why are the fees increasing, pahunkboy? Can you answer that one for us, first? Maybe you should give the REST of the quote:

And we decided that if you're renouncing your U.S. citizenship, you should pay for that rather than having the American taxpayer pay for that service.

Can't blame the USA, for trying to save the taxpayer some money. That IS something you conservatives, bitch about all day long, isn't it? Anyone dumb enough to pay this, REALLY doesn't need to come back to our country!

Really? We only tax, based on citizenship? So the INCOME Taxes we pay every year, is based on which one of the following: A) Our Citizenship, B) How much INCOME we made in a year, C) The cost for buying a tree on Alpha Centuari Prime. And those INCOME taxes, are ONLY paid by U.S. Citizens? I bet you wouldn't believe, that nearly 72% of the suspected illegal immigrants, voluntarily pay federal income taxes. I was quite surprised to learn that fact through the CBO (Congressional Budget Office).

Also, if you drive a CAR, or TRUCK, in the USA, you pay $.36/gallon for federal taxes. Doesn't matter if your a citizen of the USA or not; you pay the tax! Then there's sales tax, meal tax, estate tax, etc.

Second, if a U.S. citizen spends less then one month, inside the USA, they do not pay income taxes. Since they are outside of the USA, they most likely wont pay all the other taxes, state/federal. You dont pay the federal gas tax, while driving around in Italy!

Yes, and the taxes that our forefathers revolted against the Brittish over were less than the gas tax we pay all by itself.

And when Bernanke tries to print his way out of the second dip in this recession, and China dumps the rest of its Treasury Bonds and no one wants to buy them because the dollar is worthless, we will see a mass exodus from the country as people's feet carry them to food and work, which will be either too costly or non-existent in the U.S.. Oh, but wait, maybe that is why they will start charging to renounce your citizenship.....
