OMG There's nothing scientific about it. That's why it shouldn't be taught in schools!! I firmly believe this would be a form of child neglect- since children are guaranteed free education (including *science*) in this country. I don't know who's advocating for it to be taught in schools, I went to catholic school for 12 years and never even knew anyone still believed in creationism, until I discovered the internet in my early 20s.

I would definitely agree with this

But I bet you hang onto that cliff face pretty firmly lest that unproven theory pull you down

I hold on really tight, not only do I have to worry about an intelligent pusher knocking me down, what if he were to wander off....after all deities are notoriously unreliable.

This is *exactly* why I have more 'faith' in scientific laws than in any 'god'. You can always count on science to be there no matter what.

I suppose I could assume it's because, science loves me unconditionally!! [sm=bowdown.gif] *tears up* *gets all verklempt*

Formally one can talk about proven theory only inside a certain paradigm. The assumption (the existence of higher level consciousness)  the Intelligent Design theory makes is considered irrational by most  (naive)  materialists.

Ah, naive materialists. Very good. And you are a superior immaterialist? Is that so?

Higher level consciousness? You mean god and you cannot bring yourself to say the word. wtf?

IF is not a real theory. Intelligent design is a scientific theory.
The wiki chapter beginning says it all: "Intelligent falling (IF) is a parody...".

The only parody is that anyone would believe intelligent design has any basis in science.

He knows this, he is just trying to ridicule other people...

The odd thing is, our own physicists do not understand the process of gravity, which makes this "parody" all the more ironically meaningless.

quote:

As for the science behind the action, we know that Isaac Newton defined gravity as a force -- one that attracts all objects to all other objects. We know that Albert Einstein said gravity is a result of the curvature of space-time. These two theories are the most common and widely held (if somewhat incomplete) explanations of gravity.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/question232.htm

Julia, this is a ridiculous post. Physicists know EXACTLY how gravity works. I can explain it to you if you like, and I'm not talking any of this Newtonian "gravitational pull is directly proportional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them" crap. I mean I will tell you exactly why the apple falls from the tree and you are welcome to fact check it till your heart's content.

You are always making disparaging statements against the CM "anti-god squad" yet you've admitted that you've never studied hard science, only social science. Don't you think you are a bit unqualified to criticize things you know nothing about? Not trying to pick a fight. It's an honest question.

<edited to get Newton's formula correct>

GotSteel -> RE: The Theory of Intelligent Falling (7/24/2010 7:27:28 PM)

I'm going to take my pirate hat off and get serious with you for a second, I found it amusing that IF actually got a wiki and thought some other people might also get a kick out of it. I never meant for this to be a serious discussion. But as it turns out it has presented me the opportunity to talk about ridicule with you.

You are way beyond me there... I am taking lessons from you...

Regardless of whether or not you see yourself as the one who started this or as just following my lead, you are certainly right here with me and this certainly isn't the first time I've seen you use ridicule. So if you condemn me for this, how do you justify your own behavior?

I hope you remember that the next time someone says that tying people up is freaky and wrong. After all, they are just ridiculing the kink, not the person doing it.

I wasn't aware that you had to study hard science to spot a egotistical asshole. I think just reading some of the posts on these threads tells us a whole lot about the poster.

Actually, sweetie, I am a firm believer in the theory of evolution, AND I have studied it... stop playing like you know who I am, what I have studied, or what I believe....

I STILL do not like people ridiculed for their religion by zealots. Freedom of thought and belief mean something to me, and the bigotry and nastiness from those professing freedom of thought, show they advocate for anything but...

wpf0027 -> RE: The Theory of Intelligent Falling (7/24/2010 7:46:56 PM)

Has anyone checked out Dr. Erik Verlinde and his "On the Origin of Gravity and the Laws of Newton"  If nothing else it is interesting.

thornhappy -> RE: The Theory of Intelligent Falling (7/24/2010 7:50:40 PM)

Most have no issue with freedom of thought, it's teaching faith in a science class that raises people's hackles.

Show me where I have ever thought that this should be taught in schools, I don't

There are people who believe in Creative Design as a religious concept. Some of them post here. Is it too much to ask for respect for other people's religion?

I will date atheists, agnostics, but I don't date religious people.... funny how I get pigeonholed because I think respect and tolerance are a good idea.

Geesh, I understand how easy it is to get off ridiculing religious people, I have an extremely hard time tolerating my Fundie brother, and many times I fail, but at least I TRY

thornhappy -> RE: The Theory of Intelligent Falling (7/24/2010 8:15:40 PM)

Hey, the great drive I see on ID is to teach this in secondary schools.  The only other places you'll see it taught is at seminaries or churches.  Ohio's famous for it.

I've regularly seen atheism dissected here; there are so many religions on this site, which ones are we to respect?  Respecting all can lead to disrespecting some others at the same time.  You'd practically have to ban discussion of religion on the boards.

I think respect and tolerance are a good idea.

I'm not trying to call you religious. I think that some ideas aren't worthy of respect, you seem to take the opposite position (except when it comes to my idea). When it comes to this idea of mine and some others the ridicule you display leads me to think that you don't respect it. So what I'm saying is don't we both think that some ideas aren't worthy of respect, what we disagree on is which ideas those are.

juliaoceania -> RE: The Theory of Intelligent Falling (7/24/2010 8:25:48 PM)

quote:

I respect all of them....

And I have never had a religious person communicate to me that I have shown them anything but respect.

Perhaps it is because I am a believer in looking at religion from the vantage point of how the individual experiences it. It is real to them. We all want to be validated for how we experience the world.

I am very adamant that religion and the state should be kept separate, but my respect for people of faith is obvious to those who know me. I am proud of that.

I interact with people that have wildly different ideas of religion than I do. Some of them are animists, etc. I have read colleagues who call their beliefs "myths", which i find offensive. People share their heartfelt beliefs and we label them "myths"...

How hard is it to say "you have the right to believe anything you like, I don't believe the same way, but I respect you and your right to believe whatever you like."

Try it sometime, and what you will find may astonish you....like people being open, and tolerant of you in return
